Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

We always appear to be not as fit with the clubs that are beating us
Never got my head around it
We say player x,y,z need to play more defensively
But that to me just spells fitness/tank
So we aren’t fit enough to the game we play best
From starting to watch the better teams just go about it smarter
I don’t know
What do I know
It's not fitness

If Dow plays alongside Cripps & Hewett/Kennedy in the middle I think his game will go to another level.
His ball handling is clean and his evasiveness and burst from stoppages is elite.
If that results in Cerra and Walsh spending more time on the wing, coupled with Saad we address some serious structural deficiencies without losing much of our strength at stoppages.

i still think dows best position is inside mid. on baller. thats what he does best and it is pretty good.

i see no reason why he cant rotate with the current prefferred bunch of mids. id play walsh out on wing. i think dow in middle and walsh on wing will offer a better team balance and performance. dow can rotate with hhf position.

all conditional upon one thing thouigh....

dow has to train the house down and run run run and run more. this is really the main issue i see. he doesnt run the other way so his training should focus on this aspect.

there is an underlying question though...do players have a tank limit which cannot be further improved with specific training?
It’s also the willingness and desire to chase down hard the opposition to the required level that would at least at a minimum give his game a balance that would propel him into a bracket along with the rest of our younger mids…
I’m hopeful and still haven’t given up on him but it’s frustrating the crap outta me…
****ing chase and hunt Paddy, it will transform your entire game…

Great to see Dow doing well consistently in the VFL.

There seem to be too many ahead of him for an inside midfield spot … Cripps, Walsh,Cerra, Hewett, Kennedy … Fisher and Carroll can pinch hit in the centre square too and have more strings to the bow.
The only way we can do it is if Cerra or Walsh is pushed permanently to a wing.

Drop Newnes and bring Dow in as an on baller.

If it's going to strengthen the team across the board I'm all for it.

I think we are better with Cripps, Cerra and Walsh starting in the center square and then Kennedy and Hewett changing with them. I can’t see one being pushed out to the wing to play Dow when he is (at best) sixth in line.

I think Carroll has - on the strength of the debut game - gone past Dow. Fisher adds far more to the 22 and can pinch hit effectively in the middle.

I’m happy with what Carroll gave us first up. I think he really gives us some extra spark as an attacking mid. Does he hold his spot?
I agree that it gives us flexibility to put Cerra or Walsh onto a wing, the guy that then makes way for Dow is Newnes.
Nice problem to have when we still have setterfield to come in and let’s not forget, Cunningham and Philp.

isnt it time to move on from setters?

unless he miraculously turns things around and can show on a consistent basis that he definitely wants to play afl then he is probably going to be delisted at years end.

Give Dow a 4 week block, mixture of mid and wing and if he doesn’t cut it then his time is surely up at Carlton.

If we are to trade him then we need to give him games this year to ‘fatten him up for market’ !

Think Dow will eventually make it with the Blues. Even though he hasn’t played seniors in 2022 yet, he’s probably having his best season. At only 22, I’d be trying to keep him.

Also, think if we give him senior games just to trade him then we’re done as a club. We should be picking a team that’ll get us to finals, not to get trades done.

just don't think these ultimatum type processes work - if there is pressure on him now and he is not performing, how is that going to help him at all?

based on what is unfodling so far this year weve finally got a good group of coaches.

im confident they will get the best out of the players.

dow seems to be doing well in the vfl. just needs to keep that up and his opportunity will come for senior selection and he will more than likely do well.

just got to sit tight and wait to see how it pans out but the coaching group seem to have the players liking each other and working for each other.

Kennedy is a name that’s said with more reverence after his strong form in the preseason and first few rounds.

He has dropped off fairly significantly though.

If we were to assume Dow was to take Kennedy’s spot… would we get more output with better midfield dynamic?

(I think we forget how space creating Dows handballs are)
