Dow is OOC and could walk for free to join North if they finish last, a club that he has family ties

He would need to be best on in about 3 or 4 games to get a late teens pick for him and then we wouldnt want to trade him - 3rd rounder at best atm.Im open to the idea of trading dow at seasons end, hopefully shows enough in vfl and a couple of afl games through the year to ro get an ok pick, maybe in the late teens early twenties, load up on this draft, go into the draft with 10, 18, 28, stock up on talls and a winger
I think dow can be a good afl player, and he might have ok value (dont have a lot of that) that we could cover, we also have philp, carrol, kemp, cuningham, and stocker to fit in over time, high half forwards in fish martin and maybe honey to fill gaps with pace
Just my 2c
Just chiming in without reading the stuff above.
Why not Dow as a winger? Would he be any worse than LOB, Setters, Newnes and Cottrell? Any Gary Cranes in this lot? Carroll, Cuners and Philp nice future options, but not immediately for a variety of reasons.
Yes his tank not perfect (God only knows why after enough pre-seasons) but he has other strong wing attributes.
Come at me.
I think his game awareness, or seeming lack thereof, is the main issue (fitness/tank notwithstanding).Just chiming in without reading the stuff above.

Just seems hard to square that they have tried to mould Setters into a winger, a guy who also made his name as an inside mid in junior ranksI think his game awareness, or seeming lack thereof, is the main issue (fitness/tank notwithstanding).
For a start, Setterfield & Newnes have peaked and aren't going to get any better. Don't get me started on Setterfield because he's been given more opportunity than anyone else, and still does the absolute minimum. Newnes is just limited and has no confidence to get any better.Just chiming in without reading the stuff above.

I agree, but it seems two sets of coaching staff have seen the same things.Just seems hard to square that they have tried to mould Setters into a winger, a guy who also made his name as an inside mid in junior ranks

Haven't seen enough of Carroll or Philp yet but Cuners it's safe to say is in the same boat as Newnes, except a LOT more skillful. Pity he has no drive.
LOB & Cotters, have stepped up this year and i don't think deserve to be in the same conversation.
Dow should replace Kennedy in the middle, Kennedy to HFF, Martin to wing (booting Newnes out of the side).
Not sure he would get a game at North either, at least we should be contending soon...Dow is OOC and could walk for free to join North if they finish last, a club that he has family ties
He'd be well behind
LDU, Horne-Francis, Simpkin, Phillips
Goater
Powell
Thomas (INJ)
Cunnington (INJ)
Anderson (INJ)
Would be in the top 3 (excluding injured players) with LDU and Simpkin.
Phillips, Powell have shown next to nothing at AFL level. Goater yet to debut.
Has JHF spent any time as an inside mid?
Not sure you were talking upside. There wasn’t even the slightest hint of that being the discussion.Bit of Dow loves ok, I've always been a fan...
Would rather keep him and hope he will step up, then trade him for what we would get for him...
But IMO all those players have greater upside than Dow, bar Cunnington...
Not sure if JHF will become an inside mid, but I do know he's played 20 more AFL quarters than Dow this year..

In the worst team in the league. I’m not sure that adds anything to the discussion.
Also missed 2 years with acl injuries. By all rights Dow should he well ahead in development.Setterfield is only what, 12 months older than Dow? It's amazing what one bad year can do to fan perception.
Played as a wing in his draft year, despite being a better inside midfielder.Just chiming in without reading the stuff above.

Has he, in his time at Carlton, ever been trialed on the wing?He has never shown any idea how to play any position which isn’t on ball mid.
Whenever he’s been tried in any other role you have mountains of posters complaining he’s not in his preferred position.
They trialled the “he can only play inside mid based on TAC” Setters as a winger, why not try Dow?Played as a wing in his draft year, despite being a better inside midfielder.
Hmmm...
Has he, in his time at Carlton, ever been trialed on the wing?
He's been plonked in the forward pocket or on the flank, or he's been put in the middle. He's never really had the fitness to run a wing, not at AFL level.
It's not as silly as it sounds.
Hard to see Dow getting a game in the mid field in front of Cripps/Walsh/Cerra/Hewett/Kennedy so his only hope is another position. They trialled the “he can only play inside mid based on TAC” Setters as a winger, why not try Dow?
Dow take setters spot imoHard to see Dow getting a game in the mid field in front of Cripps/Walsh/Cerra/Hewett/Kennedy so his only hope is another position.
Not really suited to a forward or back role so really only leaves the wing as a possible position. We have tried OBrien and Setterfield and that really hasnt worked out so lets give Dow a go.
We always appear to be not as fit with the clubs that are beating usi still think dows best position is inside mid. on baller. thats what he does best and it is pretty good.
i see no reason why he cant rotate with the current prefferred bunch of mids. id play walsh out on wing. i think dow in middle and walsh on wing will offer a better team balance and performance. dow can rotate with hhf position.
all conditional upon one thing thouigh....
dow has to train the house down and run run run and run more. this is really the main issue i see. he doesnt run the other way so his training should focus on this aspect.
there is an underlying question though...do players have a tank limit which cannot be further improved with specific training?
think you know more than what you are letting on.We always appear to be not as fit with the clubs that are beating us
Never got my head around it
We say player x,y,z need to play more defensively
But that to me just spells fitness/tank
So we aren’t fit enough to the game we play best
From starting to watch the better teams just go about it smarter
I don’t know
What do I know
