There has been much talk of how well Paul Roos has done with Sydney and how much he has gotten from his list. I tend to agree that he has done extremely well and does seem to be a very calm and no frills coach who is well respected and listened to.

I believe that Denis Pagan is most probably a more astute footy brain than Roos but is not getting the best out of himself. He has a big reputation and it is I believe based on real talent. However I also feel that the reputation is part of the problem. IMO he is not gaining the same respect from his players that Roos is. They seem to fear him rather than respect him and as such are not really taking in his message.

The problem I believe is that Denis either isn't aware that his message is not getting through or believes it is all the player's fault and that any player who cannot get the message must get out.

My belief is that Denis must start looking at his own performance as a coach and person. When he came to the club it was with a very big reputation for getting the best out of men. In Houlihan, Fevola and Norman he has 3 highly skilled players no where near performing. I believe that Denis more than any other coach has the knowledge and charisma/energy to reach these guys and others on our list.

If Denis can do some self analysis and become more open minded and relaxed similar to Roos I feel our on field will change drastically for the good. He is potentially the super coach that he was originally promoted as. However thus far he has been as below his best as most of our players. If all on the Carlton list can openly work togeather with respect and honesty then things will change much more than with the influx of 4 or 5 gun signings but no attitude change.

Not much he can do if the players aren't upto scratch, or prepared to put in.

If you believe that they are just not up to scratch then fair enough. I dont agree but we all have our opinions. However if you think it is the players not prepared to put in then this is where the coach becomes a people person/motivator, something I feel Denis can be. If a player has ability but is not putting in then a good coach can at least improve if not help fix the attitude problem. Any coach can come in and get rid of difficult players and blame his list. A super coach takes what he has at his disposal and gets maximal performance from them.

A coach can't do it all on his own. He needs strong on field leaders to set an example for everyone else. This is one area where we are seriously lacking.

I agree totally. The players must take equal responsibility, especially the leaders. Kouta needs to be more open with Denis and create a much stronger bond with the coach. He then needs to create a much stronger bond between players and coach. IMO Campo should be traded or delisted as I dont think he is capable of adding to the character of the club. I am not sure about Stevens but will reserve judgement. I feel that players like Thornton, Waite, French do have the sort of character to be good leaders. It must be an effort across the whole club to realise their respective emotional weakness if we are to get anywhere near the best out of what we have.

IMO it's a combination of both things. We don't have the greatest list, but there are numerous players under-achieving. I'm not a huge fan of Denis Pagan, though his post mtch press conferences are good value. Although we'll never know, i'd love to have seen how the club would have went this year with a different coach.
