Easy opponent that our defensive style allowed us to grind down then put to the sword, only we ran out of gas a little as we did it.

Fisher came good after 13 quarters of blowing out the cobwebs, but the whole point was that he should have spent 8 of them in the VFL. Past is past now, but looking forward to our organisation learning that sometime within the next decade. The dream!

O'Brien will probably make way but I was happy with how he played, just unhappy with around 5 times where he was wide open and able to break the game open. Saad and Docherty starting to hit their straps.

Hollands is running himself in the ground and they need to figure out how to manage him over the next month. Cowan starting to find his feet and looks one of our most natural defenders right now, arguably better than Saad and rivalling Weitering. Just knows how to position and make a contest or play without being easily knocked off balance, often besting his opponents in this respect. You can teach it, but it's fantastic that he's got it this early.

McKay is in All-Australian form, except he's spending huge portions of games as a decoy and high half-forward. I can't remember seeing a player anywhere near his size providing the ground level pressure he is. For now it's working within a larger system, but between his paypacket and the thin margin of error in said system, I remain nervous. We need tactical diversity beyond this.

The much maligned Fisher , funny that.
Just shows that a lot of supporters know less than the coaches, that's funny too......
Good on ya Fish
Hollands stiff

Weird post. Think most people acknowledged he had a better game (and more specifically a better second half of the game). It's his greater body of work which is questioned/criticised. Care to tally up how many coaches votes he's received across his career?

Great analysis. Interestingly, we broke a record, 5 goals from a kick in, coast to coast, in a half.
I don't agree with the assessment that we should have just started playing faster and we would have put the Roos to the sword early. From where I was sitting behind the goals, you could see the Roos were setting up really well defensively and there was little space. Add to that when we did have chances to link up we were missing targets (looking at you JSOS).

In the second half the game opened up and we were able to take advantage of the gaps opening up.

There is nothing wrong with absorbing the best shot of an inexperienced team and then putting the foot down in the second half. Was disappointing how we finished once MMcG went off.

I agree. Also, we were getting belted around the ball in the first half. Hard to play aggressive when you aren't winning the ball. That shifted in Q3 and we were able to get the game on our terms.

It's interesting isn't it? Our strategy seems similar to how pros approach an arm wrestle ie. maintain a contest, wait for the opponent to tire and then go all out for the win.

Seems quite logical that you can't expect a Carlton running at 90% gas in the 1st half to be as effective as Carlton running at 90% gas in the 2nd half, as the variable is the team you are playing against and how strong they are.

We're expecting to play 25+ games this year, makes sense that we'd try to pace ourselves a little where possible. Mentioned after the Geelong game that it would be borderline impossible to maintain the level of combative intent that we displayed across 4 quarters for the whole season. Back to back 5 day breaks, going from NSW to VIC then across to SA. Honestly. I think we hoped to be able to keep that NM game pretty slow and still come away with the win. They shows in the first half that we weren't going to be able to coast to an easy win, so we put the foot down n the third and fourth, blitzed out to a game-winning lead, then slowed up again.

Hopefully it'll have us fresh for the Adelaide game.

This is exactly what Geelong did to Hawthorn yesterday- except they went on with the business and put them to the sword - we took the foot off the gas.

yep, think about how many good halves we've had over the past 6odd years, only to lose the game

And how many times we kicked a few late goals to make the score more respectable.

From our 20years of pain (accept for a couple of Judd years) I have always felt that in a loss if you get 46points down, what you do after that is of little consequence unless you get back in a position to win.

Just about every time Lochie touched the ball in the first half the ball was turned over. One of the worst games I've seen. I don't mean to pile on as I know he's a whipping boy, but in isolation I can't recall a game where 1 person has turned the ball over with such a high % of their disposals. He was better in the 2nd half, but he didn't have many touches and the game had cooled by then.

We've seen time and again now he can't handle the heat.

I don't know that we necessarily took our foot off the gas. I mean, sure it's easy enough to figure given we've had a history of it, but honestly towards the end of that game I was seeing some incredibly tired looking boys. Like, barely able to jog tired.

because we aren’t fit enough still or was a very taxing game?

Went all out after half time, and were coming off a 5 day break from an interstate game. Draw your own conclusions from that, I suppose, we're all guessing anyway :p

Also have to acknowledge that we subbed out McGovern as a precaution and subbed in Carroll, who proceeded to get time in the middle (rather than being hidden in a forward pocket).

Our defensive/intercept/rebound capabilities took a hit, and our on-ball brigade made room for an inexperienced kid. NM had nothing to lose by making risky corridor plays, and a few of them came off.

On the whole, the final 10 minutes is really quite irrelevant. A lot of factors at play, most of them in NM's favour - and as much as percentage would be nice (given the end to last season) it's infinitely more important for our season to manage fitness and get extra wins than it is to scrounge a percentage point or two.

We were missing some very important mids, on top of another couple not playing well, and being beaten through the midfield for the first half. Although disappointing, it's somewhat understandable that a group of tired players took their foot off the peddle while 8 goals up with 10 minutes to play.

I think north got lucky in that last little bit.
Think they were lucky to have the lead at any time also.
Most of the luck was from us being a metre or so off in kicks and handballs.
They never looked capable of beating us.

But be nice to see us start to bury opposition. It's coming.
