The first test between Pakistan and Australia starts today in Colombo. It should be a good series with pressure on the Waugh brothers to perform or else they wont be in the test side for this summer's Ashes series.

I'm backing Steve in for a hundred in this test! :)

Cheers!!

looking forward to this match. gonna be a beauty. The Pakistanis "supervising" the wicket is all a storm in a teacup. The wicket was gonna be a turner anyway.

We know what the Australian team will be and the Pakistan team has gone through a pretty major revamp. No idea whos gonna be in the starting XI, but looking at the list of players on CricInfo, i'd say that Waqar Younis, Imran Nazir, Younis Khan, Saqlain Mushtaq, Abdul Razzaq, Rashid Latif (wk), Shoaib Akhtar, Danish Kaneria will be certain starters, while the other 3 spots i'm not really sure who'll be there.

I think Australia will get up and they should do it reasonably comfortably (although you never get an easy win in the sub continent) but the first two days will be tough. I think Australia's class will get them over the line.

Ricky and my favourite Justin Langer are looking very comfortable out there.

Looking forward to some more cricket from those two in the coming hours.

Mark Waugh is getting settled at the crease with Ponting. The two look to be starting a promising partnership.

Ricky Ponting 120* (145 balls)
Mark Waugh 10* (25 balls)
current partnership: 33 runs of 8.1 overs

After his dismissal late on the first day, Steve Waugh's Test average drops to below 50 (49.90) for the first time in over 2 and a half years and to its lowest level since March 1999.

If he keeps getting dropped the first ball of every test he sure to have a big summer indeed.

I must admit after that 1st over I thought our guys were still in oneday mode. Langer should have let the first ball go to assess the pace of the wicket, especially as there were thoughts of bowling 1st if winning the toss. I was not impressed with Hayden's shot.

Ricky was fantastic but overall some of the bowling was pretty ordinary. It will be interesting to see if Gilly and Marto can push on tomorrow.

This must be the first time Hayden has failed in several innings? I usually think you could pencil him in for a century every time he is so reliable!

He got a duck in the last Test innings he played before this.

But he has had very few failures in his last 10 Tests or so.

General observations about day's play after watching several hours:

- Razzaq was very disappointing for Pakistan, able to get consistent swing but only going one way and usually straight into the right-hander's pads.

- Langer (from the highlights) looked in sensational touch before lunch but never got going after lunch. Is still too limited against good spin bowling, overly reliant on the sweep

- M. Waugh really struggled in the first 20 minutes of his innings, against some excellent bowling from Shoaib Akhtar, but looked quite assured once he settled and showed he's one of the best players of spin in the side still

- Ponting has gotten into trouble against spin bowling in the past, but in the lunch-to-tea session he played Saqlain very well, at his best an excellent mixture of defence and attack

- Pakistan's overall fielding (apart from first ball) was better then usual, no doubt due to the youthul makeup of the side as well as well-known plodders like Inzy and Ijaz Ahmed not being picked.

He didn't bowl well at all did he?

The ball that got Langer was a shocker, and Langer really got himself out

Langer was awesome before lunch. He was overshadowed by Ponting (when Ponting is in that sort of form he overshadows everyone). He seemed to struggle against the spin, but he wasn't alone there. Late in the day S Waugh and Marto really got bogged down against Mushtaq who was bowling really well. It was hard to tell whether they were playing for stumps or just couldn't get the ball away.

It was also interesting that with the umpires obviously so concerned about the light, Waqar brought on Akhtar. Play only lasted another 2 balls. You have to think that he had kept the medium pacers/spinners going he would have had a chance to press on under difficult conditions for the Aussies, and maybe get 1 more wicket which would have him into the tail.

Oh well, play starting 30 mins early, better start warming up the couch.

Martyn was out for 67.
Martyn was given out - he wasn't. Ball came off his forearm. began the slide with the next 5 wickets going for 10 runs in 26 balls.

Extremely disapointing finish, but overall 467 is good enough to set Australia for victory.

Up to the bowlers now to their job on a flat track. It'll be hard to keep the under the follow on but not impossible given their young team and our gun bowelrs.

Australia all out 467 (116.5 overs)
Ricky Ponting 141 (259)
Justin Langer 72 (117)
Damien Martyn 67 (152)
Adam Gilchrist 66* (112)
Mark Waugh 55 (82)
Saqlain Mushtaq 4/136 (40.5)
Shoiab Akhtar 3/51 (20)
2nd wicket partnership of 183 of 39 overs between Langer and Ponting.
6th wicket partnership of 128 of 36.2 overs between Martyn and Gilchrist.
Australia losing 5/10 in 25 balls to finish of their innings. Akhtar and Mushtaq doing the damage

Pakistan 2/44 (10.4 overs)
Younis Khan 30* (28)
Abdur Razzaq 12* (30)
Imran Nazir 0 (5)
Tufeeq Ahmed 0 (1)
Glenn McGrath 1/20 (5)
Jason Gillespie 1/22 (5)
Brett Lee just being bought onto the attack for McGrath.
Pakistan were 2/4 losing both openers.
Khan and Razzaq have steadied the ship now, with a promsing partnership beginning.

i thought the damien martyn dismissal was a very poor decision. i thought it was obvious at first that it did not make contact with his gloves, and at the very least, there was overwhelming doubt. that venkat is very trigger happy when it comes to the offies
