I really hope we can sneak in another pick trade somehow.

O'Brien mentioned if a player we valued was still around we may have a crack at trading for that pick.

Whatever that actually means........will have to wait.:think:o_O:oops:

I actually hope that we’re considering trading out of our picks for more future assets if we trade. With live trading, it is likely that teams targeting a player will be more inclined to ‘impulse buy’. In the NFL, a future year pick tends to be downgraded by a round in value. i.e. a future first for a current 2nd round pick. With the first pick on the second day, we’re in a great position to have a team stewing over a prospect overnight and extract a future first round pick.

Overall, I think we’re more likely to gain a premium for current assets and as reigning premier with a reasonably strong list, a current draft pick is less likely to contribute straight away, so deferring and compounding our assets makes sense.

It’s a bit less exciting. But that instinct for instant gratification is what is likely to create an inefficiency in the market place and allow us to gain a premium for current assets.

We would want a late first for 22 at the minimum I’d say.

Agree we do have two very good picks for this.

If we hokd the first or 2nd pick on day 2 overnight offers can be received and valued.

If a player with real value has slid a team may come to us and offer overs in a 2019 1s plus a sweetener. We could agree but also trade in a later pick / picks this year.

Or someone like Gold Coast, Melbourne, Dogs offer two later 2nds for our 20 to land who they really want.

Agree. There may be an additional sweetener required (upgrade a 4th to a 3rd as well?)

And you know the benefit of a late first? It can only improve more than it can deteriorate. A future first can’t get worse than a late first, but it can turn into a mid or early first with a bit of luck.

A few things

One thing that has confused me is people saying we need another KPD. I really want to back Brander in for that job myself. From what I saw of him this year, he looks much more suited to that defensive role then a forward.

Another thing though is do we really have a list that required players to be picked based on position? Surely we can go into the draft and just pick the best available.

Even though he said he wants to move to Victoria, if no one wants him id pick Jonathon Marsh up as a rookie draft pick also. Clearly AFL level
Strange then that he's been living in WA, playing WAFL. Why not just play VFL? I'd be happy picking him too. Brother Harry also an option.... who do you rate higher?

David Swallow signs a 5 year deal with the Suns.

Should hose down any talk of him coming home or even going to Norf like their fans keep thinking

Kinda weird how he's stayed long term IMO. I guess it's good for GC, but he's practically damning himself career wise. The Suns are probably paying him half the salary cap to keep him.

Matt Balmer has released his first round phantom. Has us taking Hill at 20 (24).

PICK 24: WEST COAST — IAN HILL

Clubs: Perth/Western Australia

Position: Forward/Midfield

Size: 175cm, 76kg

Bio: The second cousin of Fremantle pair Bradley and Stephen Hill is one of West Australia’s best draft prospects. ‘Bobby’ Hill is an exciting forward/midfielder who doesn’t need to have a lot of touches to impact a game. He is a player whose 10 to 15 disposals hurt the opposition, often booting eye-catching goals when he’s inside 50. He possesses great speed and agility and has a strong leap on him for a small player. Upon returning from a suspension at the Under 18 Championships for a dangerous sling tackle, Hill had a standout 25 disposals, six marks and three goal game for Perth in the WAFL colts against East Fremantle.

In the mix: Vic Metro half forward Curtis Taylor might suit, while Ned McHenry is another prospect if he isn’t taken earlier.

Are we supposed to have pick #20 and 22?

I would’ve thought Fremantle would take Hill but surprise surprise Hill hasn’t been invited to NAB Draft yet ..

Do we really need Ian Hill?

Another small forward seems surplus to requirements.

And to be honest, what I have seen of the kid hasn't blown me away, could very well be another Malcolm Karpanny

Hill could be developed as a wingman I reckon. Could be a good replacement for Masten.

Don’t get the comparison with Karpany at all. One was scared of his own footsteps, the other is not afraid to get his hands dirty.

Some Freo fans on twitter seem to think he has been, Matt Balmer said he hadn’t heard it before writing that article yesterday.

2 Weeks to go , so still time ..I think Cockatoo was a really late invite with a day to spare in 2014 ..

I think even Masten clocks in at about 79kgs from memory though. Hill is listed as 68kgs, which means that even if his skill set is excellent, physically, he is going to be way, way off playing AFL football for quite a while.

Most draftees are underweight when compared to AFL players and also who is to say Hill has to be the same weight as Masten to play?
