Don't see how we have to pick up kids with 20 and 22. Wouldn't be opposed to a mature age talent for an immediate boost to our premiership defence (still feels weird saying that, btw), with Kelly following next year.

Any standout mature age talent in the WAFL or otherwise?

I don't see how that makes sense?
If we had a hole we needed to fill I'd say fair nuff. But what hole are you trying to fill with ready-to-go mature agers?

I see it differently. For me, the concern for 2019 is Hurn and Jetta. Jet's calves were fragile this year, and gave out in the GF - could have been fatal. I presume his calves will be even more shonky next season
As for Hurn, he is getting on and the game is getting quicker. He needs to shed 6-8 kilos as he doesn't have the pace to go with many of the half forward flankers nowadays - ex . Varcoe.
For me half back flankers with good kicking ability is more urgent than topping up on midfielders.
Just my take on things, as I see them running Mallen through the midfield in 2019 and then TK in 2020.
I agree. Jordan Clark would be good but will most likely be taken by our pick. McLennan from SA sounds like he might be a goer, but I think we should take a midfielder with our other pick, maybe O'Halloran?

Hurn is coming off a career best year where he was named All Australian and was the unanimous choice for AA Captain (by everyone other than those that picked it). There is nothing about his 2018 season that suggests the game has passed him by, he needs to change **** all. We can absolutely plan for the future but Hurn's form is not a concern.

I agree and it isn't like he is the one taking on the small/medium forwards as that is left up to Cole, Duggan and Shep.

Ruck? Lycett's gone, Vardy is injury prone, Naitanui will be gone for most if not all of next year, Hickey isn't exactly a star.

You can never go wrong with a mature age midfielder either for immediate impact.

But yeah, if there's no stand out talent available then go for the kids.

Maybe a silly question but do we make our pick 20 and 22 selections on separate days as a result?

Might be on the same day, if pick 20 isn’t officially a first round pick it might be held over to day 2

It's not Hurn's current form that needs to be factored in, but rather his age.

Currently yes, but I'm looking to the future. Assuming we trade our 1st rnd next year for Kelly - then we'll be locked in to taking our 1st round 2020 pick to the draft (i.e. unable to trade it - except for the unlikely scenario where it is traded for another 1st round pick) - as 2017 will be the only preceding year we have taken a rnd 1 pick.

of course we are picking a round 1 player this year - but that doesn't count

It is just very odd...

If need be we will apply and get an exemption. We traded our 2018 first for four 2nd round picks. That's not trading away your future to land a mature player.

We traded 2018 pick 19 for pick 2018 22 plus we landed pick 20 from Lycett compo. Then there is those three other 2nd rounders last year.

Our list age is also very young so I don't think we will have any problems.

Not disagreeing that a hbfer /bp should be taken but there may be decent options later in the draft.
Having said that i actually think we'll draft mclennon if he's there at one of out first 2 pickd

There's naught wrong with his form - I didn't say that .... I was/am concerned about his speed and weight - they are interconnected. I think he should shed some kilos that's all. The boy can play as we all well- know, but time doesn't stand still (is he 31+ in 2019?) and we need to think about his successor, now.

Yeah I 100% agree with the sentiment - but the AFL make it up as they go along. If we were GC or GWS 2 things would be certain:

a. we wouldn't be having this argument as the end of 1st rnd pick would be considered a 1st rounder (or more likely, they would have received a proper first rounder through the 'formula')

b. any application for exemption would be approved straight away by the afl

But we are not - so I don't think we can rely on sensible afl rulings.
