Murphy is trying his guts out
Yes, he is having a great go given his experience level, but you can see him looking for Davies and not getting that support that has helped him so much in the last few weeks. Great indication of Davies potential as a leader - but how is it that Draper or Hughes aren't helping Murphy like Davies did?

Also shows how much we miss Hamling in the backline at WAFL level as a mentor/coach player. Once he left for Sydney we really needed to try to get Thunder an experienced ex AFL backman as a mentor for the likes of Murphy, Draper and Davies.

Especially once we decided to play Willo as a forward. Needed to be a taller ex AFL FB or CHB.

Definitely. Murphy/Davies looked good in tandem. Draper has to be turned into a flair player. He doesn't have mentality of a lock down defender.

Isn't that part of why we got Oscar McDonald?

I meant a non AFL listed player sorry, should have been clearer.
Like a Brady Grey, a Nathan Wilson or such, someone who finished up last year at AFL level and only has WAFL focus themselves, but can impart good info and advice to the young tall backs.

Oscar was always (IMHO) recruited with the expectation he would play or be close to playing multiple AFL games - essentially hoping he would be better than Hughes, and a bridge to the likes of Davies/Draper

They should make a good trio to replace Pearce, Cox, and Ryan down the track. Draper has to be the third defender doing the intercepting. Murphy first defender, Davies second.

I actually liked that quarter from Emmett though I suppose WAFL skills do mask his disposal a bit where they aren't as hair raising watching here.

I think this game shows Davies should have replaced Draper a while ago tbh. Missing him big time

Emmett showing why he isn't AFL quality. Such poor kicking, while he tackles hard and has energy, Emmett just doesn't have the disposal skills.
His disposal by foot is not even WAFL standard, zero tricks in his bag and no left foot whatsoever. AFL standard effort/pressure though.

Peel have got a good forward line but they're not getting much possession to create chains of play, although the last 10 minutes of the 2nd quarter they started to get some flow inside 50m. Brady Grey has been the most attacking mid for Peel so far.

Backline probably suffering from not having played together much with the loss of Blight (who was named as Richmond's best in his 1st VFL game) and Davies in successive games. Fair bit of yap and niggle going on between Keitel and Draper.

Emmet has been a bit fumbly and missed some disposals but at least he converted his set shot from 40m.

I'm sure Davies will go through a fair few trials in establishing himself AFL-wise. Even the greatest defenders will have moments just about every week. Draper's extended run should pay big dividends, maybe as soon as later this year.

Yes I forgot about Blight going, that is a big reason why Murphy is in the role he is in today.

At the same time, having Hughes and Draper back in the team should be more than enough experienced leaders to help the backline structures - but very noticeable neither Hughes nor Draper seem to be giving much direction or advice to the younger backline guys.

I think this game is poised as a really good test of the quality of our WAFL level coaching staff (and the AFL assistants that are there today).

If they can get the young ones focused, and turn on the guys like Tabs, Willo, Hughes and Bell, then it shows they are good adaptive and communicating coaches. If we keep the first quarter efforts up though, one has to ask questions about coaching and team on field leaders.
