Lyon was your list manager? No wonder he left, being forced to do two jobs for half the pay.

yeh thats it. lets just ignore that he gambled his house and then another house he didnt own on the stock market and lost

he must have hated the list management more than living with relatives and borrowing money from family/friends/others

he will be 30 yo by the time next season starts. cant think of a single team that would look to him to make them that much better to actually lift them to top of the ladder. good player, but I wouldnt have thought he is a need for some of the top teams.

i think he will stay.

3. Nick Dal Santo (St Kilda)A three-time All-Australian who is having his worst season since his debut year of 2002, kicking just three goals with a kicking efficiency of 58 per cent.
Will you get it in your head that we're not shopping him around? Those stats are irrelevant. If a club comes calling, fine but we're not actively seeking to trade him.

You are not shopping him around but your man Pelchen The Pelican is in the press making noises now, turn it up !!!!
What noise?
This?

"We've been very mindful of the fact we've had a very talented list, which has been very successful for a decade," Pelchen said.

"It's critical we step those retirements which allow us to bring young players through and importantly learn from these older players.

"You need players who have experienced the highs and lows, and the changes associated with living in a professional sporting environment."

How did you get 'let's trade Dal, who's interested' from that?
I'm not 100% sure, but that might also be an old quote as well.

Lyon wasn't the list manager but he had a fair bit of a say in our trading and drafting and St Kilda hiring Pelchen to take over as list manager and overule Lyon in that area was probably a factor in him leaving.

Not sure what your beef with Pelchen is but you're reading way too much in to that article and making a criticism of him based on nothing of any real substance.

You may be quite right, I could be way off beam about this.

On the flipside, Pelchen was a very cagey creature during his time at Hawthorn & was always trying to conjur up something somehow somewhere.

You'll have to excuse my cynicisim on this occasion but if I was working at one of the other clubs in the competition, I wouldn't want to be dealing with him on any level.

Well I can't say I was all that thrilled when St Kilda hired Pelchen but he has pulled off a few good trades for us and drafted well so no complaints with him so far. He made a few blunders at Hawthorn but most list managers/recruiters make a few blunders along the way.

Dal Santo is probably sitting back wondering WTF this is all about...but who knows.
His worst season i can remember him having but not even 30 yet, not injury prone and has longevity written all over him with his build. Good 3-4 years ahead i;d guess which would be mighty attractive for any mob in contention.
Cant get these types when they are having a great season, or when 22, which is the only time the kiddies seem to rate them as worth chasing.
He might fancy a crack at a flag who knows. Maybe he's already spoken with his club and a supposedly subtle feeler being put about. 3XAA elite mid with one good contract left in him ? Hmmm yeah worth more than a bit of an inquiry to suss out what he wants to do. They dont grow on trees like draft pix and 21yo possibles do...the real deal with massive finals experience in good shape. Noone would begrudge him a crack at a flag i reckon.

Do you mean the Carlton guy?

Trent Dennis-Lane, Terry Milera, Ahmed Saad, Beau Maisten... the guy is a mastermind.

All have been serviceable for us and didn't cost us much in terms of trades. Considering the draft picks Pelchen has had to work with he has done a pretty good job rebuilding our list.

Certainly better than Lyon who let Ball walk out for nothing and blew a first round pick on Lovett while picking up Richmond discards like Polo and Pattison.

Do you mean the Carlton guy?

Which Carlton guy?

I don't have any issue with what Pelchen said, as Dal, if he stays, will almost certainly play over 300 games for the club and you don't just piss someone like that away for anything less than you consider worthwhile.

I agree with what Gerard Whately said on AFL 360 last night though. Sit down with Nick at the end of the season and ask him whether he would like to stay with us, or whether he would like to be traded to another club, for a tilt at a flag, or for more money than we will offer and if he says he'd like to stay, then offer him a 2-3 year contract to lock him away for the remainder of his career and if he says he wants out, then look to facilitate that move for the benefit of both parties.

While clubs in contention may not initially be willing to offer up a top 20 pick for him, they might start to reconsider if they realise that another club around the same mark (close to a premiership) may be considering it. It's not often that someone who has elite skills and has had two top 3 finishes in the Brownlow and who has hardly ever had an injury becomes available, when they still have as many as 3 very good years left in them, afterall.

I think he would be a sensational fit for Essendon (who would be mighty keen to win at least one flag while Jobe Watson- who is only one year younger than Dal- is there), for instance, as it would be bloody hard to stop all of Watson, Goddard, Stanton, Heppell, Zaharakis, Dal Santo and co. and if you left Dal to run around on his own, he would cut teams up. He doesn't cop a heavy tag pretty much every week of the year because he doesn't do major damage when he doesn't cop one and he could still have three years of very high quality footy left in him.

Of course it would all be dependent on what sanctions, if any, they cop. I was more looking at that from Essendon's point of view, as a club that I think would benefit greatly from adding Dal to their list, if he was available.

Collingwood another, especially if they lose Thomas, Geelong could do worse than to add him, while they still have Bartel, Stevie J, Enright and co., Hawthorn perhaps another, but they probably need to go much younger now and keep all the draft picks they can. Then again, if they lose Buddy and have two picks around 19/20, they might want to add someone like Dal to give them a better shot at winning one last flag while they still the likes of Mitchell, Hodge and Lake around.

Dal Santo has had a good career and at his peak would have been worth a lot in trade terms.
He's nearing the end and it looks to be coming quickly.
He doesn't have enough trade value to make it worth St Kilda trading him even if they are considering it which they say they are not.
