Peter Helliar - is he meant to be funny??

I saw some highlights of the E J Whitten game on the weekend, and can't quite get my head around what that fat effwit Peter Helliar was doing there..

I understand that the character he played has sort of something to do with football, but don't understand why the character was playing - and more to the point does anyone find anything this bloke does funny - he is less funny than Rove (and that is saying something), his ad for the womens gym is particularly unfunny and I saw an ad on the telly last night where he rated himself as some sort of lothario whilst advertising a pasta sauce...

What is he doing on televison???
u cant have a legends game without him.

He does it very well for something that could be pretty average. Gets a laugh out of me when I see those original episodes, some of them were very funny. Why on Earth people are bring up Ricky Gervais and comparing it with Straunchie has me buggered because clearly Gervais is a genius and Helliar is a local comedian making the best of a decent skit. I like him, and think he has done a good job. The Legends Game was a bit much, channel 9 pumped it for all it was worth and they won the ratings so guess it was a wise move.

He has said this is his last year of it, so be interesting to see if he sticks to that agenda.

I think everyone here is missing my point - what was this bloke doing playing in the legends game???

Everyone has an opinion on whether he is funny or not (and I think he isn't very funny at all - any comedian who laughs at his own jokes as he is trying to tell them generally isn't)...

My initial query was what was an "actor" doing playing in the legends game...?

The problem with the character Straughanie, as I see it, is that he was unfortunate enough to have been created by an Australian entertainer for an Australian audience.

Naturally, critical acceptance will be slow in coming.

The same thing as Russell Gilbert, Competition winners and a few other comedians/personlities that have played in it.

Well, why not? It's not actually supposed to be a serious game, just mild entertainment.

If Peter Rowsthorne and Russell Gilbert can throw on a guernsey, why not Straughanie?

in person the man is an arrogant prick. I work at crown casino. Served that nonce a few times. He stresses out when the bar closes saying stuff like "do you know who I am?!" when demanding drinks.

Someone hit him in the head with a plate whilst the main course was being served. The look of pure irritation and fury on that porky face was the funniest thing ive ever seen from him.

Daniel Kerr - is he meant to be funny?
Micheal Voss - is he meant to be funny?
Chris Tarrant - is he meant to be funny?
Fraser Gehrig - is he meant to be funny?
[Insert thugs name] - is he meant to be funny?

No, not real funny, but at least largely harmless to members of the general public. Unlike the actual real thing.

his appearance at the legends game raised big load of extra cash for the foundation. half the people there were to see strauchie. whether you find the charcter funny or not, the most important thing id the charity, and he did a lot for it.

I could do a fantastic curry induced dump in the dunny and that would still be 100 times funnier than the entire combined efforts of Helliar & Roy & HG's career

Lowest common denominator comedy that appeals only to brainless bogans

You do know Roy and HGs humour basically takes the piss out of brainless bogan commentaters don't you ?
They have been at it a while now but some of the funniest shit I've heard was on This Sporting Life on the Js ten or so years ago. I'd say most of their observations go straight over your head, which wouldn't be hard because it's up your arse.

Please do not compare Peter Helliar to Ricky Gervais.

Thats like comparing a grade 1 student's painting to a Caravaggio.

Scream it from the tallest buildings, I am sick of hearing this comparison. Just because he pulls the "oh sheez, I've just said something embarrassing" routine, doesn't make him comparable, in any way, to the The Office.

Yeah I agree, I find the office and the extras funny but can see why you might not.
Anyone see similarities between Hamish and Ricky Gervais' humour?

I guess you're talking the Hamish and Andy guy.

Check out a character by Steve Coogan called Alan Partridge, Hamish seems to be knocking off his mannerisms 100%

I feel sorry for any poor bastard that thinks Roy and HG are funny ...that is just sad

Wow you're big man making statements like that aren't you, get f***** i find them funny and nothing a guy who sits behind a computer all day can change my mind.

Far and away the least funny guy in comedy/television in Australia. Possibly ever.

As someone said before, Lehmo is right up there for that title, however Will Anderson (sadly a Doggies supporter) is incredibly ovverated.

Straughnie is great in the sense that he is fun. It isn't meant to be serious or witty. Without Straughnie the Legends game this year would have been incredibly boring. Thank god he made it entertaining.

I tried to book Helliar (Straughnie) to a very large sportmans night. He was available and wanted $12,000 for the 2 hours. Agree Straughnie is a funny character but $12,000 grand for a sportsmans night is beyond a joke. I just hope he didn't charge the EJ Whitten Foundation or Ch9 for his 3 minutes of humour at the legends game.

Your are right, he is not funny at all, but there are a hell of a lot of kids under 10 who would find him funny (not kids with IQ's over 80 however) He is not quite as bad as Rove. HILLIERS comedy is compareable to later episodes of Kittson Fahey where Rove is right down there with the Wedge.

yes hes a pisser, and as much as people talk about people with low IQ's finding him funny, my IQ is quite high and i find him hilarious. Its not your level of intelligence its the humour you enjoy, which as all people should know, everyone has different concepts of what is and is not funny.
Plus as was mentioned he helped raise alot of money so its better to have him around than not!
