Player Watch Pick #16 (2016) - Todd Marshall

You also seem to want to ignore the fact that dropping a player to the twos so that they can find touch and gain confidence might actually help them.
the sanfl is a shitshow for key forwards and a known horrible place to develop them. All afl sides develop their kfs in their afl side when at all possible.

Having said that we’ve arrived at a place where sending a player to the shitshow that is the sanfl might be less harmful than trying to play in hinkleys system. Cause it’s clear we’ve shot his confidence. Hell we’ve halfway shot Georgiades confidence and he’s only just turned 20. Does anyone not think that Mitch will be a shot spraying, looking to pass off shell of himself by 23 if we allow Hinkley to continue?

I don't buy that. If a highly rated young talent can't excell at a lower league then they're simply not good enough.
Do you remember how Westhoff went when he was dropped? Absolutely tore it up and was in everything.
Fogarty has also been dropped several times and performs fine at that level.

he pretty famously did not lol.

In fact it’s a point of ire amongst crows fans that after getting dropped he got called back after doing the same lazy half assed shit he does at afl level.

Managed a whopping 5 goals from 4 games in the sanfl last year as a stout fat campaigner that usually fares well in plodderville.

Cmon man at least do your research first.

Wait, so is Fogarty in control of his own form? You sure you don't wanna blame the lower league for being a graveyard for tall forwards?

The reality is John Butcher showed more in less.

Two wrongs don't make a right but over correcting isn't the solution either.

He's contracted. He's not going anywhere. Send him to the magpies for a good while. If anything they might even have better forward systems than the AFL. Maybe he'll return and be better for it. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, every game or delist.

I can see them dropping Finlayson before marshall on current showing
Yep. Marshall has sucked but at least he's looked like he's trying. Finlayson has been lazy as well as ineffective.

Huh? What does this mean?

You claimed Fogarty did well when dropped to sanfl.

I pointed out that was false.

You're deflecting.

Going back to Marshall, you actually believe he could get dropped back to the SANFL, play poorly and have that be the fault of the league not being a good place for key position forwards. Not only that, but you still might try and tell someone who watches him play a poor game in the seconds might still actually be a good AFL player.

Very difficult to argue against that. I'll give it to you.

Now you’re trying to put words in my mouth.

I said the sanfl is a shit place for key forwards to develop, but that such is the hellscape in the afl that getting him away from that might just be worth it as playing for Hinkley is doing more damage.

You then claimed Fogarty was dropped and did well at sanfl level ergo sanfl is fine for key forwards.

I pointed out that wasn’t true, that he kicked 5 goals in 4 games in the sanfl last year and that crows fans on bigfooty were critical of recalling him after he showed no desire to address his issues there.

If a Marshall is trying so hard, why has he only touched the ball once for every quarter of football he is playing?

If you don’t believe me, just acknowledge for a moment that Georgiades, the most talented key forward we’ve drafted in 20 years (was tredrea the last kf we drafted that made it yeah we can agree on that?) who finished last year with 32 goals (1.5 a game) and looked ready to go to the next level is currently running at 0.5 goals a game and next in line to be the kf we drafted that just wasn’t good enough.

He's gone from second tall to the main tall with Charlie out.

He had 3 very gettable shots at goal on Sat, 1.1 and one on the full in r1. So he's still getting opportunities, just not converting them.

He gets involved in the game, 13d 7 marks on Sat

Marshall had 4d with 2 marks in each of his two games

He would get a lot less scrutiny if he contributed something, even if he wasn't kicking goals.

MG is playing in the same forward structure, is years younger but still looks far more dangerous.

Funny looking at Josh Battle and Marshall who were the two premier talls in the draft. One is looking very much a dud while the other is now forging his career in defence.

Battle hasnt been developed by Ken. Look at Marshall pre draft he knew the basics of leading into space ,that seems all to be lost. Is it structures , development or is he just a lost cause.

Unless we have a better option, I'm not sure dropping him right now is even a choice. He gets dropped when Charlie comes back. We should have sent Finlayson to the backline. He looked a lot better when he floated back there on the weekend. Marhsall is an off season conversation. Our forward line has been terrible for years, but this year it looks even worse without Charlie. The plan was mediocre with Charlie there, it's horrendous without him. Can somebody please just ask Hinkley if our forwards are being directed to huddle and stay in the same area, or if they're being directed otherwise and not doing it? We get these cryptic responses from him like "We got plenty of entries but we failed to execute".... We failed to execute what? The mark? The kicks? Also, calling out the fact that we got plenty of entries seems to tell me that Hinkley supports the method. This is insanity. Has anyone said to him that maybe we're "failing to execute" because we're going up for marks against our opposition AND our own players (including our "smalls"), and when we do get some sort of lead it's 50 out on the boundary? I have, and do, question Marshall's desire and ability to take marks, but it's hard to hold anyone to any sort of standard when the plan seems to be so bad.

It's not over correcting. Almost any tall will offer as much as Marshall can and did on Saturday.

At the ground his performance was even more abysmal than it looked on TV, behind and out of position every play as well as being soft to the contest.

Play Lord or Hayes.

Don't play him again until he's put on 10 kilos. Is mobility even an asset for him?
He doesn't seem to be able to get in front of anyone.

My 13yo picked this up. Said he looks like he's lost and doesn't know where he's meant to be.

Couple of weeks of Coopers Sparkling & Pizza then?

I wouldn't be surprised if he is a vegan teetotaller with a gluten intolerance.

Seriously?

I've defended Todd a lot over the years, and he wasn't a lone ranger but...

If we picked Hayes, Lord Vincentini or even Williams in his place what would we actually lose?
