Player Watch Pick #49 (2020) - Ollie Lord

There are a lot of different opinions on Lord, but with Dixon's retirement leaving him as probably the only (potential) gorilla forward on the list we have to keep him unless there is an offer that is too good to refuse.

Re those different opinions, taking the injury problem for season 2024 and his so far one off 4 goal performance against brisvegas out of the equation there is still a lot of improvement required for him to become a first choice AFL key forward.

A new coach and a different game plan may help him improve his game and become more consistent, but I won't be holding my breath waiting for that to happen as I expect kern will still be the coach in 2025.

You don't rate him yet you are expecting a first or early second rounder.. pass the pipe

Didn’t say I don’t rate him. I’ve said that if there is interest in him, we should accept a deal that nets a first rounder or early second. I’ve actually said on several occasions that Ollie has mongrel, which is something you can’t teach.

Ollie was a third round pick in a covid affected year. He’s played 19 games. Had a cracked leg and was being trialled as a backman in the SANFL - perhaps a reflection of our dire need for KPDs at the time as much as any indication on Ollie’s ability.

Despite Tredrea rating him (or sending out a single tweet), the chances of a third round KPF going on to be much chop is low. Not a reflection on Ollie - just the reality.

So if we can turn Ollie into a first round pick that statistically has more of a chance of making it then you do it.

I think everyone lost their ability of reading comprehension a couple of pages back on this thread.

The ideal or Platonic form of Ollie Lord is exactly what the team needs. Whether he gets there or at least does enough to be better than Ratugolea is another story. He had an oppontunity and failed this year but will be given another go in 2025.

Having said that, if he can net us a good pick, you have to seriously think about it.

I personally really like Harry Armstrong and I think a forward line of Georgiades, Armstrong and Lukosuis would be good to go for the next decade.

Ollie is a “looks like Jane, plays like Tarzan” forward.
Mongrel with marketable looks. Gold.

Getting rid of him now makes absolutely no sense.
Build a forward line around him and Mitch and Lukolicious.
We’ve been dreaming of this for over a decade.

I will preface this by saying I don’t rate lord as highly as some, and see him as only really a bit part forward rather than the key piece to lead a forward line. But what do people feel would be needed to even up a deal with Collingwood, lord for Richards?

Lord for a first or early second. Richards third or fourth territory.

Ready to go average KPF vs an untried small forward.

Would want Collingwood’s second and future second.

With whatever we get for Clurey and Soldo, trade with the suns and lions to get pick 16 and an early second from the suns. Let’s us take Jack Whitlock/Hotton (maybe)/Berry and Dodson.

If we are offered a first rounder or early second and don’t take it, then yea, I know better.

Bulldogs offered two firsts for Lobbe - was he worth it?
Or the top five pick for Hartlett?
When the swans came for Ladhams and Hayes, do we regret not moving on Sam?

Off the mark.

The talk was dogs offered a 1st for lobbe (not two 1sts, weren’t even able to trade future firsts back then) and port tried to get in contact with lobbe but he was overseas and couldn’t be reached in time.

Richard’s? The 24/25 yr old fringe ooc player with 9 games under his belt?

Young - 4th rounder
Hombsch - 4th rounder
Ah chee - 4th rounder
Austin - 4th rounder

What’s the going rate for an ooc player who isn’t first 22?

4th rounder. Again, we didn’t set the price, it’s not an arbitrary price, it’s what has been set my multiple teams for our players. And around the league.

Agree. But that would be how lord is viewed externally as well.

You can’t expect AFL key forwards to kick mate!
Tbh I'm not too fussed on his kicking action. I'm far more interested in him learning forward craft, reading the play to get to more contests

Mitch and Luko are the goalkickers, Lord is there to stop oppo KPDs picking off our forward entries and ultimately drawing defenders out of i50 leading lanes for the aforementioned duo to feast out on

Good thing we dodged that... even if it would've left us with no ruckmen for 2016 before Lobbe did his knee.

What was the Bulldogs 1st in 2015 again?

Also 2015 was the year that the AFL introduced future pick trading.

I had high hopes for Lord coming into the 2024 season. Thought he announced himself after kicking 4 goals in the loss against Brisbane in the 2023 qualifying final. But he had a disappointing 2024. Hope he turn things around in 2025.

The injury before the season set him back I've not written him off.

Always thought he was more of a solid SANFL player than a consistent tall at AFL level. Hope I'm proven wrong but everytime I've watched him play, including the 4 goal game, it seemed to me like there was a bit of self-doubt that held him back
