Player Watch Pick #56 (2021) - Dante Visentini

He battled hard all night ... but geez we are setting the bar low these days. Once you are picked in the side who cares how old you are. You have to perform to a certain level. It's not his fault he is getting a game before he is even close to AFL level.

Agreed, but do you have his stats from those 81 ruck contests?

We've got both games combined here.

We take game one out.

That would leave us at better than 35% wins and better than 10% to advantage.

I'll take that for a 20 year old ruck every day.

The eye test is what really matters Dante looked in his element and ROB was pulling out all stops.

I'm looking at Dante the way I would look racehorse that was nowhere near the finished product. You'd take him to the trials and he might get beaten but they show enough good traits for you to walk away knowing what you've got and be pretty happy about it.

I was disappointed he didn't hit that 104 kmh but apart from that there was a lot to like about his game. Competed hard, put a heavy tackle on O'Brien when he tried to take on Dante, put his body into contested situations.

For such a young prospect, he did as much if not more than would have been expected. More than Lycett's done the past couple of weeks.

I would give him another run against the Cats next week.

Think Lycett is clearly our 1st choice ruck if he is fit enough to compete.

Dante not being the finished product I'm ok if they leave him in but I'm also ok if Lycett comes in and we try and get him though the next couple of weeks before giving him a break.

I'm wrapped with Dante but he's still not close to being the player who is going to drag us into the finals

There are a number of reasons Dante's game tonight was promising, and these both aren't one of them. Even when you're right, you're wrong about why you're right.

What are you actually expecting from a second game, 20 yo ruck?

I think it was a really solid game and probably better than anything Lynette has dished up in the last few games

Stayed on the ground stayed in the contest.
That counts.

Not by itself it doesn't and it's laughable to argue it does.

Dante had a great game for a 2nd gamer, but he had a great game because of what he did at contests, not for simply being at them.

Scott Lycett attended more ruck contests last week before being subbed out in what was a famously awful ruck performance which lost us the game. Him getting to extra contests didn't make him a better ruckman, he was so bad he should have retired immediately. Lycett attended even more ruck contests against Carlton where he was smashed off the park by a no-name ruckman in De Koning.

Dante was great because he actively nullified O'Brien and stopped him from having his usual influence both at the stoppages and around the ground. He was okay around the ground, just okay, but that's all you expect from a ruck of his experience.

If Lycett is fit id like to see us play him and Dante together.

Give Dixon a rest and demand more of Marshall and Finlayson.

Dante is not currently a good AFL ruckman.

But he played better than I think any one of us expected on the weekend. Kudos to him.

It doesn't mean that he was good enough for our midfield to be playing anywhere near their potential though. The reason Hayes has supporters is we believe he is the best chance of having our midfield excel.

Dante has a lot of time on his side to hopefully build that area of his game.

Think Dante needs to go around again against Geelong.

Dantes actual ruck work on Saturday night is being undersold on 2nd watch.

Physically he matches ok against Stanley and he will only need to run with him and make a nuisance of himself. Gives Lycett an extra week and Lycett comes back against Briggs.

Before the game I thought O'Brien would dominate Dante in ruck contests. Just too strong and experienced.

I was surprised as O'Brien didn't. Dante was pretty competitive. My favourite moment was his big tackle on O'Brien.

I think he has a lot of upside.

If Lycett is still proppy then he needs to play this week.
Hayes isn't in their plans. It's time to let it go.

there is more to this story than football

hayes deserved more games this year, if for no other reason than Lycett is playing under duress. He's not and thus we all have to move on including Lycett and Hayes at year's end.
