Player Watch Pick #56 (2021) - Dante Visentini

I'd say your sole full time ruckman pulling out 5 minutes prior to match start qualifies as 'break glass territory'

My point was more along the lines of that he hasn't done anything to be earning a game on merit right now ahead of other players in the 2s.
I suspect he was taken to Melbourne not expecting to play but rather as an opportunity to be amongst the squad on the road just as they did with Hugh Jackson going into the Richmond game earlier this year. Then shit hit the fan and Scooter went down and they needed Dante to step up.

Of course, if Dante is given a game next week ahead of Lord or Hayes, my judgment would be completely off.

No chance he plays next week imo, coaches just had no other choice (on gameday at least)

Looked like the second coming of Lobbe. Hopefully he finds a couple extra weapons once he gets used to the pace and intensity

Got a taste.. hopefully Dante realises what he has to do now to get to the next level AFL is 2 levels above the snafl.

Poor way to be prepared for ya first game but work hard and I believe he will be quality.

Disagree! "Break glass" is literally LAST option, when you have no on else. Hayes & Lord were back in Adelaide, and one should have been travelling emergency over Dante. Why the hell take him as an emergency when he is not ready, and you have others who have shown they are. It smacks of overconfidence, and was just dumb, esp if they knew Lycett was suspect.

After 12 weeks of good selections, this week has been two steps back, with Bonner as well, not being up to it, and Burgoyne being nowhere ready!

Damn so fast that I thought he was slow

My point is on gameday he was the break glass option. His selection as emergency is a different q. I'm not sure what the numbers on this would be, but it seems like taking players as traveling emergencies for the experience is pretty common? Rewards good form in the twos? Hugh Jackson similar earlier this year. Dyl Williams last year.

Either way, he got a taste for it, knows what it takes and will go back to the Magpies for the rest of the season. No chance he is selected next week or the rest of the season I think.

Posted this in the review thread, Dante had a bit of a mare through no fault of his own, but one moment that was pleasing to see was when Zak was involved in a bit of push and shove (who would believe it?) Dante was the first one in there throwing Essendon players aside. A 20 year old, baby-faced ruckman who had to rush into the game from the coaches box.

He's a good kid, a talented ruckman and plays the game the way we want a big man to play. He'll come good.

the demand and speed of football at AFL level takes time, especially for the big guys

but the willingness to commit to the ball, get physically involved and look after mates is either there or isn't there. He's a natural.

Captain hindsight, if a player needs a fitness test shouldn’t the replacement be warmed up?

Anyway, Dante showed clean hands and moves ok. He should watch Rowan Marshall every week.

You would hope Visentini was only taken to Melbourne to have some experience in team bonding, the travel situation etc, etc, but if he was taken as a genuine ruck back with the selectors being fully aware Lycett may not play and then given little to no time to prepare it would have been a decision akin to any number of Basil Fawlty's finest moments.

I'm a big fan of Dante and I think he's a huge chance of being a good player for us but not many ruckmen are ready at 20, and he wasn't ready. I like that he was taken over and I like that he came in when Lycett went out but if we were picking a ruckman to play and not just have the experience of a trip away, it must be Hayes.

It's well and truly premiership or bust this season, we can't afford to give yet another game to an undercooked ruckman, or to muck up our forward structure and chemistry by playing Finlayson or Dixon in the ruck.

Just play Hayes. It shouldn't even be a question.

Make some good points.
if willets is out this week, dante could gain from the experience of consecutive games.
A balancing act of selection.
coaches will know best!🖐️

Unusual debut. But the strangest part was his family rushing to the ground in their hometown.

Odd when they knew he was the travelling emergency (for the first time?) they didn't decide to go watch their son's AFL team and see him in the rooms after, even if they didn't think he'd be playing.
Was thinking the same thing!

Was clearly taken over just to get a taste of the MCG and all of that. Lycett may have been a doubt, but more than likely to play. (ie. they felt he was more than 75% likely to play)

Given Hayes hasn't been rucking much in the AFL, they'd rather he get some ruck minutes in the SANFL than sit on the bench all day. I suspect knowing Draper was out was also part of the equation, as Philips is far from a damaging ruck.

Dante showed a bit, got around the ground well enough, contested the ball well (kept getting in the way of our players though!)

He's physically not ready, getting easily overpowered, but he still fought hard.

Will need to see more of him but certainly showed a few things and would have learnt a few things to work on etc.

Given our opposition and the fact it's a home game, I'm presuming they'll stick with Visentini for this game.

It's the next four games, Carlton (Marvel), Collingwood (AO), Crows (AO), and Geelong (SS) where we will need an experienced ruckman to be meshed with the team if we're any chance of winning 2/4, let alone 4/4.

Lycett out.
Teakle (lol) out.
Dixon is too banged up even to plonk in the goal square so ruck is definitely out.
Finlayson will be needed in the forward set up, particularly in light of Dixon's knee.

It's got to be Hayes all the way.
Play Dante against Collingwood/Crows and we'll end up being slaughtered.
