Picks 33, 38 and 53: What to do.

Re: Who would you pick with selection 33?

I had a good look over this list, and looked at the profiles on Knightmare's mock draft list. The ones that stood out were Grigg, Elton and Kerridge.
If we got any of these at 33 or 38 I would be very happy.

That being said, I dont think that Grigg will be available at 33, and perhaps not Elton either. Would be great to get one of these blokes, then Kerridge at 38 if available.

Re: Who would you pick with selection 33?

TBH when was the last time it was common knowledge who the club was gonna pick first up in the draft.
Seems like its always different to outside expectations.
From memory most people had us picking Rioli and Mitch Thorp but apart from that its usually unexpected.

True, but this is also because we have not had such early picks since Rioli (pick 12 in 2007). The draft becomes a lot less predictable as it goes along. The later your picks, the harder they are to predict.

Re: Who would you pick with selection 33?

Well everyone expected Tambling in 2004. Dont remember anyone seeing us taking Dowler so early and also dont remember much talk about Shoey with our first pick in '08.

No one had us with the Roughy and Bud show but I do remember hearing that we had been talking with Dowler.
All the talk was we were to get Phil Davis in 08.

Not a bad article here for those interested, sounds like we had someone having a look. Not sure if he is exactly what we need but imagine having two Buddy like players roaming the forward line. Perhaps pick 38 on a project player with X-factor in Manson.

On all things indigenous, can someone confirm if there are still rules in relation to rookie listing prelisted players, just wondering if Carl Peterson is going to put himself in the running to make a comeback.
I 2nd that i want to know if Carl Peterson has nominated for the Draft.

As the first two picks are going to be a bit of a gamble due to the supposedly lack of depth. We need to decide where the lists has defeciencies.

Although Gunston is a potential KPF - he is not that yet. (At 80kg he is a 3rd/lead up fwd, even increasing that to 85kg in the off season, he is prob 2 yrs away holding a KPF role - although he could play from rnd 1 in a diff role).

To me that leaves us with 4 genuine KPF, and one of them is Hale - who is primarily Fwd/Ruck not full time in the fwd line. (Franklin, Roughead and treating Shoemaker as a swingman). To my mind we should go for a speculative pick for a Key position fwd - as Shoe although could, has basically been pencilled in as a KPD by the coaches.

The other position would be a mid - best available - if that means the most speculative so be it. Doesnt really matter if its inside or outside mid, but what I would take into consideration would be the availability in the following draft if one is more loaded with inside or outside mid players to assist in the decision making.

Gunston was drafted to play that third tall type and eventually use his versatility to push up the ground to a wing or what not.
Dont really think we want him to be a main KPF type.

Re: Who would you pick with selection 33?

Just wondering if there is any chance of Toby Greene drifting to pick 33.

The majority of info around says he will go anywhere from 10-40 problem is he had a particularly nice champs (and was noticed) which has raised his stakes in the draft, include the fact that it's suppose to be a shallow draft means it's unlikely.

If Grigg gets to 33 and It's a big if, you would have to take him, but If he didn't, I would definitely grab Kerridge.

The only way he will slide as far as us is the fact he's not particularly athletic and didn't test that well at the combine, might scare a few off but I doubt it.

Re: Who would you pick with selection 38?

You would think that with this years draft being considered extremely weak, pick 38 will be used for a mature age player from the vfl/sanfl/wafl/qafl.

Who that player is, i have no idea.

Fair call although you have to consider that the minor leagues have as much danger as the TAC players. Wasn't Paul Johnson a gun in the VFL winning the JJ Liston medal ? Didn't work out so well when he was considered a very good player. Shane Valenti also a gun in the VFL yet couldn't crack it in the AFL.

Smith and Puopolo were excellent for us this year and with Gold Coast open to some raiding of talent at the end of 2012 I wouldn't be surprised to see us go for well physically developed players like Waldhuter,Marley Williams, Kerridge and co that may have an impact straight away.

Interesting times ahead.

Re: Rucks: What do we do at the draft table?

Sam Frost sounds like a likely type,i was just wondering where you guys think he will fall in the draft.

Wasn't it quoted by Knightmare that he was a lousy kick? said something about it goes all over the place at the moment.

Re: Who would you pick with selection 33?

If Grigg reaches us at 33 because other teams do regard him as very athletic - then why would we draft him?

I have previously thought Midfielders all the way. In fact I have a belief that over the next three drafts 2011-2013 and assuming we draft 3 each year that a combination of 2 KPP - 6 Mids - 1 Ruck is the balance we are after.

So back to this years draft I can see no reason why we can't get the 2 KPP's now and the rest over the next 2 drafts.

The reason I have changed my thoughts on 2011 draft is the the KPP's available at around 35 are the same ones that teams will be selcting from around Pick 20 onwards. The best mids are taken by 20 - leaving HBF's, lightly framed HFF's and small forwards for the picks in the 30's.

We can pick up better mids in 2012 and 2013 and be OK in terms of list management.

So the 2 KPP's who we should be thinking of include:
Andrew Boseley
Tom Curran
Michael Bussey
Sam Frost
Henry Schade
Jackson Paine

Do you mean if they don't regard him athletic?

Perhaps because he's a natural footballer first and just because he didn't test well dones't mean he doesn't have the capacity for improvement. It will be up to the Hawthorn recruitment department to decide how relevant that is and if he has it in him to improve in this area.

Taylor Walker didn't test particularly well either but his natural talent seen him into the AFL system along with countless others, didn't Dean Cox look terrible when he first reached WCE look what happened then :)

Re: Who would you pick with selection 33?

Luke Hodge would be a fair example of someone who would not test too well but has a couple of other appealing attributes that make him an OK footballer.
