Players that were overlooked in the National Draft

Damian Mascitti was a smoky for the ND overlooked. Was no certainty to be picked up but a few experts seemed to like the look of him, including Emma Quayle.

Would be a perfect pick up as a rookie, excellent skills, just needs to work on his fitness and speed.

Jack Crisp was very unlucky. He seems to tick most of the boxes so I hope he gets another chance. He is young, recently turned 18, so he should have a future.

Bolger, Frost, Bolseley, Turner and Manson would be nice
Hirdy has already said we're going mature-aged, so I imagine it will be guys like Dwyer and Horseley.

EDIT: Frost has to be an early pick. He still has a lot to learn, but he has all the physical attributes. Someone will take a chance on Manson.

I'm completely dismayed also with the following names not getting picked up.

- Bussey
- Jackson Coleman
- Boseley
- Waldhuter
- O'Hanlan
- Frost

Not sure what went wrong but gee i was tipping all of them to go in the top 50 with Frost, Boseley and Bussey to go first round.

Wheres your mock draft? No one calls themselves an expert. For gods sake it is their opinion and it is highly valued by most.

Why dont you put your balls on the line you clown

this is why the whole argument about failed draft selections is garbage.its a futures market not a guarentee market. until your in the position to have to make a choice its easy after the fact!

so was the pav!
Not entirely - In those days you were only allowed to pick one 17 year old, and usually, teams picked one early.

The only team that didn't pick one, and was therefore the only team still eligible to pick Pavlich, even with their last pick in the draft, was Geelong.

Not as fascinating as guys like Sam Mitchell and Andrew Swallow who went undrafted once and then at #36 and #43 respectively the following years, so every team had a good long look at them and nobody saw what they'd become.

so does that mean 15 clubs didnt pick him?

Tom Rockliff and Dan Hanneberry were two "I can't believe they were not taken in the ND" picks that have gone on to great things. Would be good to do a thread of BF Hits vs Recruiter misses.

He was picked at 30 in the 08 ND as a 17 year old.

2011:
Port - Not in the PSD
Freo - John Anthony

2010:
Port - Scott Harding
Freo - Adam McPhee

2009:
Port - Josh Carr
Freo - Not in the PSD

2008:
Port - Not in the PSD
Freo - Joshua Head

2007:
Port - Adam Cockshell
Freo - Not in the PSD

2006:
Port - Matt Thomas
Freo - Not in the PSD

Think that probably explains things haha.
Why stop there!
2005:
Port: Elijah Ware
Freo: Jarrod Schofield

2004:
Port: Jacob Surjan & Josh Mahoney
Freo: Michael Johnson
Finally, something worthwhile (not fantastic, but easily the best of the bunch unless Anthony/McPhee return to/exceed their best form!)

But to be fair to them, most club's PSD selections are carp.

ie: Carlton:
The good (but a long time ago now)
2004: Nick Stevens
2005: Eddie Betts
The bad
2006: Dylan McLaren
2007: Cain Ackland & Cameron Cloke
2008: Darren Pfeiffer
2009: Chris Johnson
2010: none

Yes, but at the time he wasn't rated particularly highly, and teams only got one 17 year old per draft, and he certainly wasn't high on many lists - Early picks like Des Headland, Justin Longmuir, Mark McVeigh and Brady Rawlings were 17 year olds, and while they obviously never turned out as good as Pav, they were more highly rated at the time.

The dumbfounding thing when a guy goes undrafted is not that they were passed over with the early picks, but that no team even saw fit to give them a go with their last pick in the draft - In the case of Pavlich, the only team that could have drafted Pavlich with their last pick in the draft was Geelong.

Hoping that John McKenzie from Tassie is given a chance. The only negative is he is 177cm. But geez he reminds me of a Sam Mitchell. He will give 100% and a quality individual. Hopefully someone gives a footballer a chance to play football!

It's pretty uncomfortable when you are sitting around waiting for a family member's name to get called out and it doesn't happen. My cousin had been spoken to by nine clubs and he missed out.Pretty sure the Rookie draft will give these kids a lifeline.

yeah it just shows players develop at different stages and ages.it also shows while drafting is a major undertaking its development of these kids that is more important which the tigers previously have been not very good. fiora was a case in point. i understand most clubs would have drafted him high but we just couldnt develop him very well, hence the comparison to pavlich.

Hope there is a happy ending for you. Let us know. Good luck.

Totally agree. Thought for certain he'd be a sure thing after looking him up.

1. Played 4 out of 5 national games for Vic country
2. TAC Cup team of the year
3. Bushies B & F from only 12 games
4. Top 10 in 2 events at National Combine
5. Declared 1st draft chance from Bushies

Poor kid must wonder where he went wrong.

That would be terrible but if he gets on a rookie list we've seen many success stories these days.
