Players who left your club and became better

Scully was playing a tough role in outside defence with developing teenagers around him early on. Hardly surprising he wasn't that noticeable. In 2015 his injury had an impact. Last year the guys around him grew up and he could play a more attacking role.
Fair enough. Hard to impartially analyse someone's performance when whenever you see him on the screen you want to hurl the remote at it.

Winston Abraham
Peter Ball
Shannon Grant
Alex Ishenko
Robert Scott
John Blakey

All played their best footy for us.

As for players who left us and became better:

Liam Pickering (bnf)
Tim McGrath
Krusty Hale (3 flags)
Turncoat Gibson (3 flags + bnf)
Jose Romero
Tony Liberatore (brownlow)
Leigh Brown (flag)
Martin Pike (3 more flags)
Byron Pickett (norm smith + another flag)
Peter Mann

I know you dont want to hear it but Scully was always value for us, and resigned on less last year.
Value? He was one of the top 5 paid players in the league and barely best 22 until last year.

He's come good now, but he definitely took a while.

Definitely not Colin Syliva.

Scott Thompson's played a million games for Adelaide since leaving the Demons so I assume he's done something right.

Tom Scully took a while, but it's fair to say he's finally earning at least some of his paycheck.

I think Mitch Clarke played about 5 games for the Demons so whatever happened at Geelong was probably better than what happened at Melbourne, tbh I never really paid that much attention tho.
Gerard Healy received his 1st AA in 86 (the year he joined the Swans) and 2 more in 87 and 88.. and a Brownlow in 88.. ouch.

Have to say I dont agree about his performance. Do agree we paid overs to get him, with an increased cap and the capacity at the time. If it's any consolation it's reversed now and we wont be buying players in for a while I think. Trying to keep what we have under the cap.

Scott Thompson at Adelaide is one that still hurts
Kyle Cheney has become a good player at Adelaide as well

Ruckmen have been a gold mine for us
Jolly left and became a premiership ruck twice, Simmonds left and played well for Freo and Richmond. Stef Martin has become a good follower at Brisbane since he left

Jeremy Howe may well become a more consistent back line player at the pies even if the media forgets that Roosy played him down back first in 14'

Not too many others have improved after leaving us, careers come to die at Melbourne

Jeff White replaced Jolly and Simmonds though so can't really complain too much about that.

Paul Williams went to the swans, won 2 best and fairests, was all Australian, won a flag and became a 300 game player...
Williams was already a gun when he left Collingwood, I don't know that he got better when he left. He had more success because he was in a better team, but I don't think his playing output was higher.

Yeh I've thought about pre much everyone we've given up since 2007 and pretty much all of them were duds at their other clubs . You could say Scully based on last season but his four before that weren't as good as he was at the Dee's, and you'd think that after six seasons in the system, he would lift his disposal average by three. Frawley and Howe have both maintained their Dee's standards, they've always played at a pretty high level in a pretty poor team.
Thankful that we kept Watts in the end tho. If he went to another club, I have no doubt that he would've become elite.

EDIT forgot about Thompson. Absolutely huge loss at the time. Has become a legend of Adelaide. Absolutely fantastic footballer, he is getting past it though.
Gysberts? LOL! He never played a game for us and was cut after 1 year.

Again, I don't reckon Pike and Pickett were better players at their new clubs, they were already bloody good players when they got there. They just had more success because they were in better teams. Right place, right time.

Pretty hard to think of a Collingwood player, some may argue Heath Shaw but he was always a very good player, his brother went on to win a BaF at the Swans iirc so he'd definitely be one, the only other notable player was Nick Davis.

Jonathon Ceglar (though hardly surpsing given how long ruckmen take).

Heath more maintained a higher quality of play but improved his consistency IMO.

Beams is one who could take his game to a higher level if he can get a clear run at it.

Dom Tyson for GWS.

I know there are other examples in the thread, so apologies for singling this one out, but it's just an example for a broader point.

Does it really count as getting better after they left a club when they left as a kid, and most (if not all) of the improvement is just what you'd expect of a decent kid as he matures?
