Re: Should the Brisbane Lions stop catering to Fitzroy Supporters?

Being a supporter of a footy team is akin to tribalism, it is always going to invoke emotion. Threads of this type seem to bring out the worst in people. I link to the tribalism. Why not just ban threads, of the type of this one, such threads deliberaltey seek to promote that emotion.

I don't mind threads like this, as long as they don't get outright abusive. Whist I have a different viewpoint to yours, I still respect your opinion.

I agree with you on one thing, people get so emotive as they love the club so much. I think deep down, we all really want the same thing, success on-field, and a strong club off-field... we just have different veiwpoints on how to achieve that.

Re: Should the Brisbane Lions stop catering to Fitzroy Supporters?

I'm just amazed at people calling to lock this thread "They won't listen boohoo just lock the thread". Are you ****ing serious? Raise a valid point as to why Fitzroy should cut into having a majority of the Brisbane image. As has already been pointed out, enough has been given. How about you listen, jesus.

Why are Roy supporters asking for more than an evenly balanced jumper, as a result of the merge. The history is in the jumper, no one is calling to sever TIES WITH FITZROY YOU ARE JUST TAKING IT WELL AND BEYOND WHAT I'M ACTUALLY SAYING. Fitzroy is very much alive in the original jumper, perhaps already over the level of fairness considering Fitzroy basically just died.

Re: Should the Brisbane Lions stop catering to Fitzroy Supporters?

That is just pathetic that people would rather the club be the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy football club, wearing the red in some games and the Bears colours in others. Happy to shun the premiership jumper, one united club as the result of two merging and keep it divided when the Victorian side is immensely smaller and ever dwindling despite what jumper Brisbane threw in their faces.

Seriously the stupidity is not coming from my side, "Trolling, waghh, wagghh, killing the club's history".
In no way have I ever called to kill off the club's history, the paddlepop partly has, but I have never supported it. I support the original maroon, blue and gold which contains plenty of both.

We are not asking for more then our share... go back and find me where anyone has said we are demanding more then what is in the merger agreement? Go back and find me where any of us have asked to take over the club and disregard the Brisbane side of things?

I have asked you to do this many times, and you have failed to provide me with any quotes with people asking for this. Therefore, you have yet again proved that you are full of it!

Re: Should the Brisbane Lions stop catering to Fitzroy Supporters?

What exactly did the Bears give up in the merger?

Their logo changed from a Bear to Fitzroy's Lion (that Lion is gone now and could be gone permanently fourteen years from now). They added blue to the existing Bears' guernsey of maroon and gold. The Bears changed their theme song to Fitzroy's tune with some of the lyrics from Fitzroy's song and the rest were from the Bears old song. A vote of Bears members added "Fitzroy" to the official name of the club (but not to the trading name). Most of the public would have no idea of Brisbane's official club name.

Anything else?

The Bears retained their home ground, the name (which appears on all scoreboards and promotional material as well as merchandise), their eleven home games, their HQ, most of their board (there's a guarantee of one Victorian director in the Constitution, but he/she doesn't have to be from Fitzroy). At the time of the merger they retained the majority of their 1996 list and their captain and coach. Their players live and train in Brisbane. The club's social club is in Brisbane. The Bears also retained their historical records, with the AFL counting the Bears' history with that of the Brisbane Lions. (i.e. from 1987)

50/50 merger would you say?

And lightening the maroon to red for six Victorian games, so that the jumper for games in Melbourne resembles the old Fitzroy jumper a little more, is too much?

Re: Should the Brisbane Lions stop catering to Fitzroy Supporters?

Two clarifications before I jump in:

I think having a strong melbourne supporter base would be a good thing, takes away some of the home and away factor.

I am a Brisbane Lions (BBFFC) supporter never supported the bears or fitzroy.

I love the old fitzroy colour scheme when they play in melbourne, fan of the home game colour scheme as well.

What I want is our clash jumper to be recognise the bears old jumper (obviously with a bit of an overhaul as it wasn't that good looking) instead of the white jumper which I swear makes it impossible to win a game.

Seriously thought about about walking away from AFL when they screwed Fitzroy but i thought the Lions (I never call them Brisbane) gave Fitzroy supporters something tangible to hang thir hat on. There was an AGREEMENT put in place and by stealth (in some cases full on naked bastardry) that agreement has been undermined. I'm with you...do the right thing and honour that agreement...no more, no less. Go LIONS

Re: Should the Brisbane Lions stop catering to Fitzroy Supporters?

Obviously Fitzroy weren't merging for a 50/50 deal. Anything else would be fairly difficult given the distance between Brisbane and Fitzroy wouldn't you say? Can't Roys be happy with a jumper that is however 50/50? Do you think Queenslanders would care for a club that goes past that 50/50 against them in the image however when they could just have a club that is totally dedicated to them instead?

Once again, how do you feel speaking on behalf of Queenslanders when many of them have expressed in this thread that they like the Fitzroy jumper and consider it a more than fair arrangement.

You're starting to look as silly as the Iraqui Information Minister. Denying everything despite bombs falling in the background.

All you are basically expressing over and over again now is that this club isn't for you. No one is forcing you to stay.

You already indicated back in July that you were likely switching to the Suns. You are really dragging out the exit. Get it over with.

Re: Should the Brisbane Lions stop catering to Fitzroy Supporters?

I like the red jersey.

I trust you cleared that statement with the Official Spokesperson for Queensland Based Supporters POBT?

Sounds like you find the Gold Coast more personally appealling though. Fair enough. Enjoy.

A few have already come on here and expressed their agreement. You'd already know without me telling you for the 50th time that it's obviously a bad thing for attracting more supporters in Brisbane. Why alienate the most important fan base by giving over more of the image to Fitzroy? That already didn't work, it didn't work so there's no more to argue. That they were around for the grand finals is typical, but it's just about impossible to think that Brisbane will actually have a significant fan base in Victoria (Which is already dwindling) especially in the future when there are none to remember Fitzroy.

I've already said I'm not going to the Suns, you don't have to bring it up, irrelevant and not even aimed at my argument whatsoever. I don't know where you're getting this 'I'm expressing that this club isn't for me'.

It boils down to why should they even be asking for more when their dwindling numbers don't justify it at all, and they are already represented very fairly in the original jumper.

And I've told you just as many times that I disagree with that conclusion.

Stalemate.

Can only resort to basic numbers in lieu of that.

It's basically you and Kerry OT against a far more numerous amount of Queensland supporters who like the "maroon @ home/red @ Victoria" arrangement. You may need to consider the possibility that your finger isn't quite on the pulse.

You realise the red jumper in Victoria is the current arrangement right? You are the one wanting a change, not them.

I wouldn't be opposed to having a bears style clash jumper as well as having the red Fitzroy style strip... I think that is a fair request.

Anything is better then that white crap.

A far more numerous amount of Queensland supporters that disagree? What, four or five internet posters? It's not just in Victoria, but all away games that it's worn. Stalemate I guess, but when thinking logically about marketing and increasing support in Brisbane the conclusion you'd draw should be in line with my one.

Magnificent. :thumbsu:

I must be deficient in that much vaunted Queensland gene that makes people fly into a fit of rage if the colour maroon isn't somewhere in their line of sight at all times.
