I hope you’re right. Almost all of the Americans I know are wonderful people, and rational.

But running though American history is a huge craving for religious fervour. To a lot of Yanks, if they’re not getting stirred up about something, they’re not really living the American dream.

It used to be just religion. Religion still is a huge fact of US life, but that need for fervour has crossed into politics as well now.
