It's an interesting discussion because it's not a discussion that seems to be as prevalent in other sports. We seem to be stuck in this middle ground of being professional enough that players are well paid but not professional enough that players really care or are really dedicated to their craft.

If you've got a little bit of talent, there's not much pressure to perform. It's not like the AFL is full of amazing footballers and if you don't perform you'll be out. You can sort of just cruise through if you want. So it comes down to self motivation.

You look at someone like Nick Kyrgios who is an outlier in his sport in that he gets by on talent alone. Yes he wants to win but ultimately he's happy to enjoy his life off the court and getting the best out of himself isn't high on the agenda. It feels like in AFL half the playing cohort have this attitude.

I think your underselling Kyrgios a bit. He's had a year off with injury. He really does want to win in the moment, otherwise he wouldn't have those meltdowns and carry them in to his press conferences, even if it seems there's room for improvement in his preparation and dedication. Tennis a year round sport and he doesn't just wait for the big ones but also doing the smaller tournaments in between.

Our footballers seemingly have one eye on the weekends and days off all year round, and they advertise it to the world.

Probably Pav at 6?? Pav is better than all but Franklin in that top 5, and by a long margin for some of them. Criminally underrated. Ditto tredrea, but he probably loses cred due to not having the same longevity and battled in his latter years due to his knee.

Jack Riewoldt is overrated. How the * anyone would rate him ahead of his cousin, Pav, Tredrea, Lloyd, Brown or even Richo is beyond me.

Theres clearly recency bias in that srticle, but i reckon Jacks underrated.

Yeah i think he forgot about the 2000's completely and how many decent key forwards there were in that period. I reckon since 2000 there is a clear standout in Lance Franklin but after that i reckon you could throw a blanket over up to 10 Key forwards and Jack for me would probably be on the outskirts of that top 10. Great footballer but i personally think Jack Riewoldt/ Hawkins and Kennedy sit at the back end of the other names such as Pavlich, Nick Riewoldt, Lloyd, Hall, Tredrea, Brown.

This just isn't true. Have a look at the NBA. Deandre Ayton and Ben Simmons are both getting paid about four AFL teams' salaries put together and they have the exact same professionalism issues. No amount of money will turn an unprofessional personality into a professional personality.

Might be just me, but I've never thought this guy had much idea at all.

Maher is just another poseur who loves the sound of his own voice. Sermonises way too much. Igorant as bat droppings IMHO.

My top 10 kpf's since 2000:

1. Buddy
2. Hawk
3. Tredders
4. Pav
5. Nick Roo
6. Grant
7. Jonno Brown
8. Tex
9. Lloyd
10. Jack Roo

Tex better than Lloyd? who has kicked over 300 more goals than him (in 9 more game), won 3 colemans, has 5x AA and 12x leading GCs?

Depends if you’re influenced by games played.

Buddy
Tredrea
Pav
Nick
Hawkins

For mine, Tredrea was an unstoppable force like not many, comparisons were abound with Wayne Carey.

Pinched this from Reddit. Goal Kickers between 2000 ( 1st year of 100% professional footballers) to 2020 (covid interrupted year)
