Anyone in footy at that level will tell you one five day break isn’t an issue, it’s the occasions when you’ve had repeat 5/6 days breaks for a few weeks particularly against an opponent who has had more 7 day breaks.

And yeah McKay, SDK and to some extent Acres are big outs but we managed to replace Finlayson, Marshall, Soldo and SPP and still get it done

One of the pure joys ive had this season is watching jhf in the last halves. Much maligned over the past few weeks and especially the suns game for “sooking it up” even got random boos from the blues fans tonight. He goes into half time with 7 touches and 0 clearances. You sit there checking the stats phone in hand and ask yourself geez. its another game where our mids go missing and just a continuation of jasons new found frustrations which should continue with a couple more frees against and undisciplined acts in the second half.

But then you let the game roll on and watch this once in a generation talent show you what hes got. Will this week be an inspirational tackle, a run down the wing with a pinpoint pass, a pack mark or a miraculous goal from the boundary line? Nope this week was all class and grunt work. 16 touches 5 clearances 5 tackles 1 free against and the best part was his goal from 1.2 in the second half. Not a running bounce goal or a banana from the impossible angle. A simple, disciplined set shot which on replay pretty much all the lads got around him like it was his first for the club.

And so with all the shit canning of hinkley there will always be one silver lining to come from the last two years and beyond. And that is JHF.

Finlayson and Marshall are arguably not even in our best 23. Soldo probably is but the gap isn't huge. SPP is the only big out.

McKay would be our best key forward by a mile, De Koning would be our best ruck by a mile and Acres makes our starting team.

Agree. That 2nd quarter was the most frustrating quarter of football I’ve watched since 2007. Two ruckmen go at it- free kick Carlton. Curnow doesn’t get himself to the drop of the ball- free kick Carlton. Dixon pack r*ped by 4 defenders- play on.

I was so frustrated by that second quarter I didn’t fully enjoy our second only win ever from four goals down at half time. A character building win. They now know the effort and desperation required to win the thing.

But knowing it doesn’t equal doing it.

This will sound negative but being at the game I think this was much more about Carlton than about us.

After half time Carlton were completely out on their legs. half their side had hands on their hips and were chilling it around with 2 quarters to go. It was as obvious as anything Port were going to steam roll over the top.

Unfortunately many will think it was just a reflection of us being really good rather than that being more about Carlton.

Possibly true but we neede the confidence boost and it’s improved our chances no end
