I don't know , I'm not sure he would be worth the effort. Sure his brother is here but its by no means certain that he will become an integral part of our best 22. And Motlop is on big dollars apparently.

Honestly , if we going to go for a talented under performer to perhaps replace GA , Tambling would be better value. Has never got past the "picked before Buddy" thing and we have done alright with another under performing guy from Richmond.

As I have said before , I doubt we will chase anyone. We trust our picks , we trust our system. If GA goes , we can bring forward contracts and release any pressure on contracts then give games to kids on our list. Menzel and Duncan etc are our future not the likes of a 30 year old Motlop.

Hopefully it doesn't happen but if Gaz does chose to leave do you think Geelong would look at Mundy?

Let's look at who we could trade

Blake to a club that need a solid back-up ruckman (Freo? Eagles?)
Mooney to a club that needs a strong lead up forward (GC, Port?)
Stokes or Byrnes to anywhere (we have a lot of small forwards or blokes we need to fit into the team permanently like Duncan and Menzel who can get their start in the small forward position)

We should look at getting picks or some players with skill and pace. I think if we could get another speedy backmen to compliment Wojo, that would help us out so much

Blake NO - Not taking into account his attitude , I would not trade him or delist him. (ATM) Ottens has played how many games the last two years? He is almost done. Blake is a number 1 ruckman and nothing else. Take Ottens out and let him be assisted by Hawkins & maybe West/Vardy etc and Blake is a reliable , durable ruckman.
If he misses out, spits it and wants out - obviously trade for what ever you can get.

Mooney NO - to old and would interest no one even if we wanted to.

Stokes or Byrnes , maybe although Stokes is almost the mascot of the team. Byrnes is 27 so if he was going it would have to be this year. His form has been reasonable this year so he would probably find a home.

The problem with trading anyone in 2010/2011 is the draft is so distorted and draft picks will be so late for any players traded.

Apparently we're keep on Gamble, is he contracted? What's his form been like in the VFL?

What Akoner said.

Watched a lot of him in VFL and he has a massive leap (always has had) and can play tall or small hence is versatile, but doesn't read the play well enough for the backline. Put him forward like we did in 2008 (when he looked really good) and he'll probably become a decent player for you.

Thinking about it who exactly is eligible for the vertans list next season. I think it's only Milburn and Wojak so it's not like we have someone on a massive pay that is waiting to be veterans listed.

I can't see any advantage in delisting Milburn and relisting him only to place Wojak on the veterans list. How much more money could Wojak be offered than Milburn?

Anyone who will be 30 next year (not sure whether that's as of Jan 1) and is in 10th year is eligible, so I think that means maybe Ling, (Otto also would be but he hasn't been here long enough), but probably only Mooney and Wojac with Chappy not til the year after.

It is an issue though because that vets list spot ideally needs to be occupied by one of your highest paid players when you have a cap sequeeze. Hence Dasher agreeing to play for peanuts in 2011 (like Wojo has done this year) is no use to us, so if he is to play on I dare say we'll need to look at whether we can do the delist-relist thing. If only Mooney and Wojo are eligible though and they're both on peanuts then it might not be as much of an issue as if someone higher paid was available. Only the footy department really knows how tight our cap position is so we're just guessing I spose.

The more players we have on the veterans list, the smaller our rookie list has to be. Is that how it works?

I think there was a change in 2006 (as listed below), which deregulates that rule. The rule that does exist is the salary cap one, where I've listed it below from the CBA.

Where it gets confusing, is when they have nominated veteran's, or if they do not, then the eligibility to play past round 7. If we have two on the vets list, we cannot play any rookies past round 7 (I think), without a long term injury (i.e. place them on the primary list etc).

There are also salary cap concessions for playing a rookie also, hence the flavour of all clubs to find rookie listed players who will definitely get a run in the primary list.

From AFL.com.

Veteran Players

Under AFL player rules, each club may nominate or list any number of what are called Veteran Player’s.
  • In order to be eligible for classification as a Veteran a player must have been the age of 30 as at September 30 in the relevant AFL season and be on the primary list of the AFL club for at least 10 years or in the case of Port Adelaide since the inception of the club.
  • From 2006 there is now no limit on the number of veteran players a club can list, as long as the player meets the required classification.
Rookie Players
  • All clubs can maintain a rookie list of up to six players. Participation at the NAB AFL Rookie Draft is voluntary. A player included on a clubs rookie list cannot play for the club in the AFL except in the Pre-Season competition of if a rookie-listed player is promoted as a long term injury replacement player
  • A rookie player must be 18 (and under 23) before December 31 in the year he is drafted. Sydney & Brisbane can include one or more players on their rookie list during the period between the NAB Pre-Season draft and the NAB Rookie Draft provided the player has resided in NSW or the ACT (in the case of Sydney) or Queensland (in the case of Brisbane) for at least three years before his selection. This encourages Sydney & Brisbane to invest in local players who were not selected at either the NAB AFL Draft or the NAB Pre-Season Draft.
  • A club can retain a maximum of three players on its rookie list for a second season provided it nominates those players at the time of the compulsory list lodgement.
What is not counted when calculating TPP?
    • Relocation expenses paid to First Year draft choice Players, Rookies or other Players required to relocate and First Year draft choice Players and Rookies who are delisted within the first two years
    • Air fares for visiting parents and taxi fares (to attend training, matches & functions) for a players under 18 which are paid by the club
    • Bereavement assistance (up to $2000)
    • A percentage of football payments made to a player(s) on the Veterans List
    • Football payments to a rookie list player promoted to replace a player on the long term injury list
    • Payments made under Additional Service Agreements to players (and associates)
    • Testimonial payments
    • Match payments for AFL Finals Series Matches
    • Airfares and accommodation expenses for one person per player playing in the Grand Final
    • 50% of football payments made to nominated rookie list players
    • Premiership prize money
    • Top 5 draft pick recognition payment
  • And from the CBA:
  • 13.3 For Total Player Payment purposes, a proportion (as set out in the following table) of Football Payments to each Veteran shall be excluded from Total Player Payments, such proportion to vary depending on the number of Veterans at each Club:

Number of Veterans Percentage of Football Payments
    Excluded from TPP
    1 50
    2 50
    3 331/3
    4 25
    5 20
Any number greater than 5 100 ÷number of Veterans

Is it time for Joel Corey to head back to Perth, perhaps?

I would love to see him finish his career in the hoops though, but there is a lot of pressure for those midfield spots
Joel may have something off field to offer us.

And maybe with proposed interchange changes the stamina of guys like Corey and Ling will become an asset again, so that will be interesting to see what AFL commission comes up with as it might affect how teams look at their lists

Good point on Blake, but I think his time is up and West/Vardy/Simpson would do a reasnoble job in the short term with Tom Hawkins. Wouldnt be surprised to see Blake at Port Adelaide next year, they have stated they're intrested in a back up ruckman.

I dont think Hale is strong enough in the ruck to be on Geelongs radar, I think they'd be more intrested in Sam Jacobs, though players like Trent West, Dawson Simpson and Mark Blake would most likely be looking at over options if we landed Jacobs.

Any intrest in Walker? Could be a handy Milburn replacement, and would give good drive off half back.

I definitely hope not! We have Drum, Laidler, Hunt and Gillies waiting for a spot in the backline, no point trying for Walker.
That was my thought, but Walkers a different kind of player than those youve just mentioned, with the possible exception of Hunt see how he develops. I dont think it would be the right move.

Hilarious SEN rumour: Andrew Mackie is going to the GC. Thats why they are not playing him. Ablett is staying and Mackie is going.

How these callers know these things has got me. Their sources are always impeccable. ;)

I just don't know how they can drink that early in the afternoon.

Dont want to step on any toes here (long way from the Hawks board...), but I was wondering if you think the Cats will retain Gamble and Djerkurra? I think both could be great in the Hawks team, and I think both are out of contract. Given their lack of games in recent years, do you think they either or both will seek out a trade?

They'll both be delisted, help yourself. Gamble can play, just needs some backing.

Signed a four year deal, so I'm unsure how he can go to the GC without Geelong and the rest of us knowing. It would be fairly obvious if he stated he wanted out like some have been saying; he'd be in the reserves as soon as he stated he wanted out.

Though the latter has happened, he is a required player and is under contract.

Mackie of the age that I'd like to keep but with Drum, Enright, T.Hunt, J.Hunt and Corey/Kelly chipping in we could go without him if he wanted out.

I wouldn't want to sell Blake unless he was replaced by another solid ruckmen ready for AFL. I haven't seen enough of Hale to make a call on him but I think Jacobs is too inexperienced. I personally think North could give up two of their ruckmen. Goldstein or McIntosh with Petree as 2nd ruck is a perfect combo I reckon.
