I am new to Bigfooty....yet this board does live up to some of the Cliches of the AFC.

Talk of there being cliches on this board are a bit over the top as most us wouldn't know one another if we fell over them in the street.

What you do get are posters of the serious kind who generally respond to those threads/posters that they can relate to.

Then there are the not-so-serious posters who post mostly for a bit of fun & argy bargy.

But then of course there are posters of the old fart brigade who generally post on anything that attracts their attention.

So what it all boils down to as someone has already stated is that we have the =

Oh so very cool ones.

The not so of the above.

& the type that really matter :)

Think this comment and those of MD capture the my thoughts on the topic.

IMO longterm posters remain generally becuase they want some serious discussion and to capture the latest going on.

I know myself being interstate I get little or no info in Melbourne on the Crows.

Then you have those who want a bit of fun, to stir a few people up ......well there's a place for that too.;)

But posters should not think there's any clique simply because they don't get responses from longterm posters .......understand the type of subject matter these people are responding too and if you want to get involved I haven't seen anyone shunned since i've been on the board.

Frankly I wouldn't know who is in any clique .......Iam certainly not

Yes there are those who know each other personally ......

I do think that if posters post well thought out posts on any subject then there will be those who will want to discuss the posters POV.

But if you post crap ......then what do you expect as a response

I believe i have responded to a couple of your posts in my usual style.

But seeing as that i am so far from being considered "cool" you probably never noticed them.

I've always considered you kinda cool .......but it's hard with that avatar :p

there are 3 types of posters on BF broady speaking (imo).

- people who have knowledge and interesting things to say (sometimes)
- people with enthusiasm and interest, who are often good for a laugh as well
- noise. people who derail discussions, and insist on reducing matters to the limit of their knowledge and understanding, regardless of the train of actual discourse.

most people have a bit of the first 2 categories, it's the tolerance of the third that damages.

this isn't club specific either. it seems that what is being asked is that people a get a free pass if they're from a different club to show how we're better people. my 2 cents anyway

Since I have been involved in BigFooty I have found an increased amount of people who 'sit back' and wait to totally tear apart a post/member.

These people who site back and 'knit pick' other posts and members (often because of who they support) should not even be warranted with their opinion.

Well I’ve been around for a few years, do a bit more reading than I do posting, and most of my stuff goes past without much impact anyway.
But a few things i have noticed over the last few months (and in general).
AFC is by far the most lenient board, we put up with a lot more crap than other boards especially from certain areas, it seems we are more worried about others perception of our board than what actually gets written.

There has become a George Bush with or against mentality.
It seems we are currently in the cycle of if you don’t criticise the club, you have rose coloured glasses.
People tend to hunt in packs on topics till it gets pathetic – i.e. Rendell issue finding any little piece of an article to have a crack at him. (Probably belongs with the above point) or pick on a poster for their views until it gets absurd.
Thread Topics (i am probably guilty for this) seem to get started to continue pointless arguments or to re-kindle arguments that have gone know where in previous threads.
People are too precious about people disagreeing with them; I can have a difference of opinion and still be friendly,
One thing that always gets me is why people constantly re-iterate things about posters – i.e. Drummond is a Norwood fan.
Apart from those things I still enjoy posting here and think we have a fairly decent group of core posters who can post a few things on football that you can see has had a lot of thought put into it.
Look forward to next seasons and trying to meet a few more posters.

p.s does anyone remember Arrowsmith(i think it was arrowsmith)

This board, like any other, only degenerates when the original topic of conversation gets lost. There are some here, I think, who use this board as a means to:

a) Boost their own ego, by posting smug, "definitive" posts that imply only they know the real truth, close thread, no more discussion.
b) Satisfy their own superiority complex, by shooting posters down in flames and calling their intelligence, knowledge or insight into question without actually contributing to the substance of the particular thread.
c) Publicise their connections (supposed or otherwise) with the AFC in an effort to impress.
d) Alienate posters not involved in the clique - yes there is a clique - by either ignoring their posts or collectively bagging them.

Personally, I think the moderators here are completely inconsistent in their handling of discussions. There's a lot more leniency shown to some when it comes to "off topic" posts (read attacks) than there is to others. I think that adds to the perception of cliques etc and does not assist open mature debate.

There's also a broad range of posters here, in terms of ages, literacy, knowledge etc and, whilst noone deserves to be alienated from any discussion on these grounds, it does mean that some can communicate better than others. It doesnt mean that their opinion is any less valid or insightful.

The bottom line is, if we want a backslapping board that favours certain people or views, then we are heading in the right direction. If, however, we want a board that caters to open vigourous debate, then lets all show respect for each other when discussing issues. It's an opinion board - there is no right or wrong.

And, quite honestly, Im sure I've been guilty of this as often as many.

Have a great Christmas :)

No, you dont know but if you stick around I can let you in on a secret

Feenix? What kind of name is that? Where is the reference to football?

I'll ask NC what he thinks about this

How long have you been signed up for anyway?

Its a difficult job and one I wouldnt want, anymore that is. When I think a mod is being inconsistent I wonder how much info I have and maybe whether my standard is different to theirs, I report posts and they stay, I report others and they go. I move on and let them do the job. I would prefer to see a post disappear than get carded so if all I get is one missing post then I'm happy

Valid point and one I forget at times, so ^^ 5s and chocolate milkshakes for reminding me

I think what has been forgotten in all this is that the posts that have disappeared were not even remotely respectful and hence the reason behind this thread '' **** off you victorian flog'' is not enhancing the tone of the board. It is not vigourous debate to look at a posters club and dismiss the points raised because of that. Many times I have seen a poster from other clubs raise an issue and get howled down only for those same people to backslap and congratulate a ''friendly'' poster for raising the same issues.

Yes I have been guilty of that and especially with Drummond, but I have also acknowledged his good points. I will endeavour to be a better person in future.

.

Have a great Christmas :)
And a happy new year :thumbsu:

I love it when people say this. It never fails to crack me up.

Of course you can hold an opinion which is wrong. Its when people are proven to be wrong, and fall back on the 'its my opinion' cop out that debates go south.

In my dealings with this forum (and other forums), there is a bit of a main clique, but it isn't as prevalent as on some other forums, and I find that the main clique is quite open and welcoming - I know nobody on here from a bar of soap though.

Having said that, I'm comfortable posting on here. Sometimes people agree with me. Other times people disagree with me. But that's forums for you. This isn't a police state. I'm entitled to my opinion; others are entitled to their opinion. I haven't had any major problems with this forum, and I don't anticipate any problems in the future.

some of you ***** are taking this way too ****ing seriously

this is a very relevant point - and my intent was not to try and influence behaviour or whatever.

Most are making valid points - tha most of us should consider.

I still say it would be nice if we were a little more tolerant of alternate opinion.

Erm no....in fact you can't have an opinion that is wrong.

opinion: a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.

You can, however, be incorrect in the statement of fact. For example, your post is wrong, because you have given a statement of fact that is, in fact, incorrect.

However, in the spirit of this thread, I will embrace your illiteracy as the embodiment of that which makes the world go round, acknowledge your right to hold a view, hold up my middle finger to you and wish you a merry christmas.

:D
