You are wrong on that one , how can you call Boyd soft. He should have won the Smith.

Like I said, he made his name in the GF, but he didn't use his bulk in many games I watched prior to that.
In fact he probably stepped up when he was forced to play ruck late in the season where he gained confidence.

But just my observation which I acknowledge is not always a good one!

It was like Graeme Teasdale when he had to go in the ruck and won a Brownlow. How many would know who he is Ted ?

Yeah spot on!
Goodes was the last of the 'Bloods'! Jude & ROK retiring has left a hole but Josh Kennedy went a long way to begin filling the void with his GF performance, along with Hanners.
They definitely need some help & I can see Heeney being the next one capable of putting in some big efforts when the team/club needs him to. A young group last year, who have hopefully learned what is required from down deep when the crunch comes.

Bring ROK back to the club alongside Kirky in the coaches box!
I just look at who can/do run through the middle & I shake my head with what we have.

Some absolute elite superstars in JPK, Parker & Hanners.

I reckon 3 future elite superstars in Heenz, Mills & Jones.

Kizza is probably not quite elite but still easily best 18 of any other club.

So by "help" do you mean Lloyd, Hewett & Macca?

Will be interesting to see if any of those last 3 can step it up from last year. Robinson was good too IMO before he did his shoulder.

And I reckon we could load up the D with guys like Marsh, Newman, Laids who didn't get as much a crack which will allow us more flexibility with rotating Rampe, Mills & Jones through the middle.

You listed one player who actually consistently wins battles against hard as nails opposition midfielders - Kennedy. Then you listed a bunch of other players.

My first number on my footy jumper!
Number 20!
Teaser! What a sensational player he was in the short period for us in the ruck.
Then the Pies took him from us.

A Brownlow medalist (with the Swans) too... a lot of people forget this! Edit ( Oops! I see Bedford already mentioned this.) Sorry folks.

IIRC I think he flattened little Gary Wilson of Fitzroy at the Junction oval one day in front of the Fitzroy members stand. Not one of his finest moments.

Haha. Yeah JPK is a bit like that isn't he?

In all seriousness though, Hanners cracks in just as hard as JPK just in a different way. JPK is "on" the ball all the time. Scrapping & fighting. A rest for him isn't warming the bench but floating fwd & kicking a goal. Hanners though is our most aggressive gut runner by far IMO. He leaves nothing in the tank week in & week out. He pressures, leads & misleads & selflessly puts his body on the line. I'd have Hanners up with Kennedy.

Parker I reckon could be in that convo but just not yet. Young & injury got him a bit. But he'll bounce back hard this year I reckon. I wouldn't be surprised if he beats JPK & Hanners for brownlow votes (more flashy) this year anyway.

But yes, JPK is right now our best player in terms of importance, consistency & performance. Buddy, Hanners, Parker etc can all be as good or better on their day. But none as consistently as our Captain.

Flattened me in an Under 19's game as well ! When he went to the Filth he was cooked. Worked with him a couple of years ago and he hates the way AFL is now and prefers to watch the Storm.

Hanners is great, but I think the point was he's not an elite clearance winner like JPK... as you said in your post, they're different players.

He's a crab ! His grand final games was brilliant , that's all im worried about.

Agree.

His PF against GWS was just as good. When Roughead was forced out with the eye injury relatively early, there was no betting Mummy would just monster Boyd who was forced to ruck solo for the rest of the game. It didn't happen, Boyd was just about BOG and unfortunately for us backed it up the following week.

He may have been slow to live up to the #1 draft billing, but even if he doesn't fire a shot again he can fall back on his 2 best games in his career came in a PF and GF. That would suggest he's somewhat better than a crab...whatever the hell that is.

Its still a pretty good midfield though sf51, might not be the best but it is certainly better than you give it credit for. You are majorly underating Hanners with that comment, he is rarely beaten.

I think Jacks use by date as a full time mid is up and Mitchell is a big loss, however Heeney and Jones look to have enough ability to step into those roles.

Take away the GWS midfield as that is stacked with talent, and tell me which teams have a better midfield than ours? Genuinely curious.

I would only rate the Dogs higher.

Not only won the medal. Won it with over 50 votes. I think he still holds the record for the highest votes ever won in a Brownlow. Amazing season. The big question which is completely off topic is who was the greatest ruckman to wear the red and white - Teasdale, Round or Cazaly.? Never saw Cazaly but I think Round was our best that I have seen. Lenny Thompson really shouldn't be counted because he was so far over the hill when he played for us. Poor bloke.

Definitely Barry Round!

I think when Teaser won the medal, the votes of the two umpires were counted.

I could be really wrong on that one but I'm quietly confident that was the case.

Correct both Umps voted for a couple of seasons. We watched it at the Lake Oval as we were there sleeping overnight for finals tickets.

I've gotta second this. Big Barry bled for the club through thick and thin! Was a warrior for my local VFA club, Williamstown, too. Must be right up there in marks taken by ruckman and could be relied upon for a goal every few games. Did not attend the Peter McKenna school of kicking. But effective enough. Very fair player too IMHO.

Which perhaps explains why he got 59 votes or something like that. Thanks for reminding me I had forgotten that two umps voted along with what I ever saw in my ex-wife. Maybe there should be a Lake Oval sleeper club for all those who have slept there for finals tickets.
