I only have limited info - it came in start of this year, thats definite.

I hear Buckley say on SEN that ‘a rule change’ was hurting his performances.

That’s where it sits.
Pretty sure they're talking about the mid-season re-interpretation of the rules, which coincided with the down turn in our form. Kingy, Bucks and Joey have all commented on it at various times, believing it that along with the injuries, this is what most contributed to our downturn. It was also mentioned by Buckley on the couch I think...

They said that the Swans and Carlton were the teams most detrimentally impacted, and that the Doggies and Hawthorn got the most favourable impact.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how the last few seasons there has been talk about the season being as even as it has been over the last few seasons?

To me it's a result of how they load each teams opponents based on their finish the previous year, that theorerically results in a huge cluster of teams because it bring the top teams down by forcing them to play eachother and props up the poorer teams by having them play weaker opponents and giving them more chances to have an upset win.

The other thing that happens is teams that otherwise would have made finals are now missing out because they're forced to play tougher opposition and they lose their spot in the 8 to a team that has had a tougher draw.

I guess it's all swings and roundabouts, and if you're good enough you'll make it.

What rules were re-interpretted?

How quick the umpires took to ball it up. Teams that relied on system and structure used those extra 5-6 seconds to make sure everyone was in place. Teams that rely on chaos and bursts at stoppage got more less time to be manned up properly on and could benefit from that

Now that sounds much more likely than my lame attempt to provide a reason!

Thank you for your help! 👍

Gday people, heading up to Sydney from Melb today for the game this weekend. First time attending a home game, and first time visiting Sydney! (as an adult anyway; came up when I was like 10 for a family Xmas but didn't really go into the city, Luna Park was about it lol, 24 now so don't remember a whole lot)

Wanted to ask if anyone has
recommendations of pubs/bars/nightlife spots to check out tonight and also on Saturday evening after the match.

Maybe a sports bar I can also half tune into the elimination final tonight, mingle with other young people, Swannies supporters etc etc. but just any recommendations generally speaking, for a bloke in his mid-twenties to stay entertained and enjoy a few bevvies

Staying in Surry Hills but will train and bus and walk around all over the place really

Thanks! Keen as, up the bloods! 🤍

I''m in my mid-30s so take what I say with a grain of salt but Surry Hills is a good spot however you'll mostly get people finish up work on a Friday night.

The Shakespeare Hotel in Surry Hills is normally pretty packed. Trinity hotel up the road is Swans friendly from memory but can be fairly quiet.

If you want something busy better off going into Newtown. The Courthouse Hotel is normally Swans friendly and may have the game, it closes at 12 then you can pile to the Townie (Town Hall Newtown Hotel) however I couldn't speak to what the crowds there would be like these days.

There's also Vic on the Park but they'll likely have the NRL on the main screen

Except that’s not the change they made.

They did this same time as the HTB interpratation
Did they? There was no announcement that I could find that they were planning on so doing. And I haven’t noticed any marked speeding up, nor heard/read any media discussion other than that one Ben Dixon two minute segment that was hardly thorough in its presentation of supporting evidence.

I'll see if I can find a link later but from memory yeah

It only just occurred to that in last year’s grand final.

Three players eligible for Sydney F/S played.
Mitchell, Daniher and Dunkley

Of the three only Mitchell played for us. He left us to go to a Vic club after a few years.

Dunkley preferred to stay in Vic and Daniher nominated Essendon despite them being far less successful.

Similarly Marc Murphy declined to join Brisbane as a father-son as he didn’t want to leave Melbourne.

And that is why academies are necessary.

Dunkley didn't have a say , we could have taken him

My recollection was that we were only going to match in case another non-Vic club picked him.

I re-read the Emma Quayle article and it did not that was just speculation though.

In any case, quite the draft blunder in hindsight passing on him and instead wasting a list spot on 0-gamer Tyrone Leonardis.

To me it's a result of how they load each teams opponents based on their finish the previous year, that theorerically results in a huge cluster of teams because it bring the top teams down by forcing them to play eachother and props up the poorer teams by having them play weaker opponents and giving them more chances to have an upset win.
The loading of the draw is a pox on the AFL, and should immediately be stopped. Assuming they don't go on and win the lot and prove they are really that good, watch Hawthorn come back to the pack next year when suddenly they don't have a dream draw.

They should either move to play each team once, or do the 'fixture' on some form of rolling basis, so over 3 or 4 seasons (or whatever is feasible), with the exception of a nominated rival you always play twice, you pretty much play every time X times (i.e. something close to equal).

But its the AFL we are talking about so - hahahaha, that's all that needs to be said!

The “most even season ever” is often synonymous with a lot of average teams fighting over the privilege to get smashed in a final.
