First thread, so go easy

Considering the extra salary cap freedom Carlton will have at the end of 2010, are there any players we may target for a trade? I'm not concerned with who we will offer in return (too early for that) just who we may want.

I know it's a long way off - and this season's form will play an important role - but still thought it was worth discussing.

It's a pretty strong chance it'll be a tall forward.

Pavlich was mentioned during trade week last year. Great player obviously, age counts against him a bit for mine, but we'll see. Roughead is another tall that has been talked about a lot on here but no concrete evidence.

Other guys I like that would be worth considering are Lachlan Hansen who has a lot of talent but hasn't really come on at the Kangaroos, and Travis Boak the young star midfielder at Port who is a victorian originally.

You can bet Swann is working on it already. Maybe we won't need a tall forward if someone like Kreuzer or Austin can really step up and become dominant in that position.

No matter what happens though, we've got a whole season to enjoy, hopefully a very successful one so lets worry about that first.

Quirky, if you've been reading around here for a while, you'll know by now who to listen to and who not to. All the right posters were voicing opinions on Pav, and although he's a long shot, it seemed like something was in the pipelines.

But look for tall options from teams that have decent KPF stocks. Collingwood (Dawes' name was thrown about), Adelaide (although ever so quiet at the trade table) and perhaps even Brisbane again could be potential trade partners.

It will be difficult with the introduction of GC17 however.

i'm gonna bet by the end of the year we will not be interested in tall players on this board. I think we will realies we have a lot of quality here, perhapswe will target a midfielder, modern football you can not have enough depth in terms of quality small/medium players, but you bet if Roughead is an option we will hunt him.

I agree. I think our tall timber stocks are underrated. And as you said, added depth in the midfield could never hurt.

... wouldn't mind Roughead though :thumbsu:

I think this is a good thread, but I'm not sure that we're in a strong position given we're not going to have a decent draft pick to give away, due to GC, plus the clubs that we'll deal with will probably look to first trade with GC for the picks they can offer. Our only chance as I see it is the psd, which is a two edged sword, as it means a shite 2010

I think for Roughead we would have to pay through the nose, I think Hansen may be a look in considering he is in the right age group and his price will be reasonably low if he has an ok season while still showing something.

I also believe our tall stocks are in good shape but having another good KPF won't hurt us at all when Waite, Henderson and even Austin to an extent can be played as swing-men.

Who should we draft???? It's coming up reel fast and if we dont watch enuf yotube videos then we will picks all a spud.

Seriously, can't we at least wait until the season starts? That way we will at least know what works and what doesn't....

What about the end of 2011? Who will be out of contract? Keep in mind the GWS team will be entering and we should get a decent father son prospect.

From a strategic trading perspective, if you want something good you will need to give up something good. This particularly applies in the next trade period due to the GC franchise having a lot of picks to offer up as tradebate.

We wont win any uncontracted battles either vs GC, so we will need to give up something in a trade to make anything happen. And give up something of value.

If you look through our stocks, any of the list-fillers wont be wanted by any other club so no good saying fisher et al...no one wants them. You have to look at where you have an oversupply of talent.

The only area we could say this is in our ruck stocks if Hampson and Warnock step up a little in 2010. This would give us 3 very good ruck prospects and something to trade, e.g. Hampson most likely. If he starts to hit his straps..of course we won't want to lose him, but if you wanted to trade for a KPP of note, he'd most likely be the one if he stepped up in 2010. This would allow Carlton to deal with GC to snare additional first round picks as they'd want an up and coming young ruck. These picks could then be on traded for said player, e.g KPP of note.

I'm not saying I want this to happen...just thinking aloud that this is probably the only likely scenario come 2010 to snag a quality player. We don't have enough KPP fwds or bcks to give away... and as everyone has said on this site, you cant have enough quality mids in this day and age so no point giving up a Gibbs for a roughead..no point as we'd need to re-draft a Gibbs.

You also cant offer up ok or or average players (Armfield, Russell, Garlett etc)...just wont work if you are going for a quality KPP tall.

Obviously GC17 have the dollars to spend, but I reckon joining a club with a rich history, and possibly on the verge of something special might sway someone to join the Navy Blues in 2011 and beyond.

I have a weird feeling draft picks will be flying around pretty hard and fast this trade period.

That may be the case, I can even see it headin the way of the NFL, where they can trade up or down during the draft, and future picks. That's some time away, but geez it'd make the draft more exciting, and would keep the CEOs on their toes too!

Maybe we could target a qualtity player with an interstate team who might want to come back to Melbourne.

Someone like Ivan Maric who has been at the Crows for 5 yrs - a local lad from Keilor who played with Brock McLean at the Calder Cannons.

I like the crazy (Serb/Croat?) Goes hard and gives a great interview. Probably don't need another big man but.

You're right we probably don't need another ruck. It was more about the "coming back home" factor to lure a player.

Roughead would be a great acquisition - but realistically I can't see the hawks trading him and we would have to give up a lot to get him.

I think it's equally likely that the club will use the cap space to tie down the young guns like Gibbs, Murphy and Kreuze to long term contracts. Given we've also added yet another highly rated first rounder, and we've got some other kids like Joseph who will ultimately command decent wages, I'd be suprised if they don't have on eye on the future.

Honestly, what I'd like at Carlton in next years trade period is something many of you will question.

Appears as though Carlton has a phenomenal amount of height in its backline. We even have a midfielder turned sensational defender in Jordan Russell. We also have Army and a couple of others filling the gaps.

However, what I don't see on our list is the permanent mid-sized defender whose the mainstay down the defensive end and helps the likes of Jamo, Waite, Bower and T-Bird. I'm talking about someone who has the ability to play the role Andrew McKay did in our last premiership team.

That's what I'd like to see Carlton go out and target. A well-rounded, highly skilled permanent backman who has a decent head on their shoulders and can lead the team from the back while the talls play their role.

I truly don't believe we have that glue mid-defender yet. As good as Jordan is, his around the ground versatility will stop him from being employed in that role. If someone gets hurt in the midfield or on the half forward line, Russell will become the guy that the coach turns to and says "You go play that role, I believe in you."

Army and the others are the animal the backline needs. Not the leader type. Not Andrew McKay.

That's all that we need. Our height is fine, our midfield is amazing. Get that one key link and we're premiership material.

You mean a 21 year old KPP who has played finals, won us games off his own boot and was playing excellent footy before getting injured last year? It amazes me people seem to throw all the lessons about KPPs out the window when it comes to Lachy.

Anyway, come the end of this season you wouldn't be willing/able to pay what he'll be worth ... and he's contracted anyway.

David Hale though ...

I agee on Hansen, kids a stud. He's played as well as could be expected for the opportunities he's had.

Someone on the North board recently posted the stats for the likes of Scarlett, Lake and Croad at the same age and Lachy compares more than favourably.

Not saying this proves he'll be as good as them, but he's done the apprenticeship a KPD needs and is now ready to go.
