btw did anyone else see reddens tap to grockes open goal. that was intentional, very smart. realised that both defenders went to him and got an open palm to space for grocke for an easy goal. cant teach that stuff. alot of guys would have tried to clunk that mark, which is great when it works but gone to ground the 2 defenders would have locked it up for a bounce.

im very excited about seeing redden/ bass improve next year and hopefully get a shot in the team sometime next year.

Hard to get stats spending so much time either off the ground or in the forward pocket. Redden started on the bench. Another example of how our younger kids miss out on the development they need. Redden should go to Sturt where he could play 1st Ruck.

Pettigrew, Webb and Davenport looked like what they are today- SANFL players.

lol redden wont make it as a ruck alone thats why we play him up forward if we were selecting on ruck ability and not around the ground / forward ability he would be in the B's his ruck work is average at best, which his fine for a second ruck. Its his forward work that puts him above the pack. Plus parry's the best ruck in the comp

lol at sturts ruck stocks then if he would be number 1 on ruck ability alone, if he works on his forward play he will be great for the power as a second ruck, that rucks ten mins a quarter and plays at FF /FP. If i was the power i would be asking for him to play up forward as much as possible rather than resting on the bench. Saying all that if you guys dont develop a number one ruck he isn't going to do you any for you good.

still he has improved alot this year in the ruck and up forward and he is still young for a ruck his size :thumbsu:

I think you might find that Webb spent a fair chunk of time on the bench as well as Redden. I think if you are sticking up for Reddo he might need more than 1kick and 1mark in a team that kicks 18goals 14 pts and dominated all day.
It might be a fair bit easier getting a kick in the eagles forward lines than in Wests with double the forward entries and 32 scoring shots to 14.:eek::eek:

Pity Broadbent couldn't get more of the ball even at SANFL level. Except for a 2-3 game burst from him mid-season, he's had a consistently low possession year.

Good to see Butcher and Stewart amongst the goals. One can still make it at AFL. The other will hold his spot on our list next year because we need back-ups in ruck and up forward, but the reality is he still struggles at AFL level.

Stewart is a simple case
He needs 7kgs
He then needs a breakout game- he has to have some mongrel where he smashes a pack and has the confidence to do that
we need a quarter where shultz and chad are out, and we kick it long, and he simply smashed into it
let him get rubbed out for 2 or 3, then he can bulk up and get ready for next year

he's the same as worstdonkhoff
if he wont add mass he is pointless

Butcher looked good today......
I could hardly disagree more, I'm surprised he is in the Magpies' firsts. Must have failed to mark 1:1 10 times or more which was seriously costly. Yes he is a different beast when the ball is on the ground but does the Power need a 6' 6" goal sneak?
Surj was generally OK and looks match fit. But nothing about his game to make the Power selection panel play the tape twice.

There you go perception's a funny thing. I would pick him for the Showdown based on what I saw. His workrate through that forward line up to the midfield is immense. Maybe could have held a few more marks but as another poster noted if chopping the arms was paid evenly he would have had even more shots on goal. FInished with 3.3 was robbed of one shot on goal and on a good deck getting some one out service he would be a handful.

Who was Hoskin? Was he Glenelg's #35? That kid was sensational.

Hoskin is Port's 55. Macca19 has noted him previously and looks a skilled composed player.

35 for Glenelg is Ben Kennedy one of the 17yos the SA club is trying to bribe GWS into pre-listing. Stephen cRowe has likened him to Cyril Rioli.

Funny tho how his 12 possessions as a small mid makes him a sensation and Butcher's 14 with 3.3 as a young tall key forward relegates him to the reserves.

Yeah he was good, I agree.

The difference is Kennedy went and got his, he was not a key marking target. And he was very effective with his disposal. I'm a bit surprised he only had 12 possessions

The Butch was sensational yesterday, worked right into the contest in the second half and workrate was high. If they actually kicked the ball anywhere near his chest he'd have taken a lot more marked but continually over his head, at his ankles, 5m infront of him etc makes it pretty tough also was continually scragged one on one without getting any frees.

What I enjoyed about Butcher's game was that he played like an AFL forward in a SANFL game. One minute he would be up on a wing presenting and getting involved in a passage of play then seconds later he will be running back towards the goal in the same passage of play presenting again. He chases anything that moves in the forward line and creates pressure. He would have an impressive 'pressure acts' stat record.

To dismiss him as simply a key marking target is doing him a great disservice. Taylor Walker kicks more SANFL goals than Butcher but Butcher would work at least twice as hard without the ball as Walker. Butcher works as hard as most midfielders at SANFL level. And we've seen how much that adds to Lobbe's game at the higher level.

Yeah, Butcher's style will create more opportunities for himself at AFL level as he doubles back and runs opponents executing the rolling zone off their feet - as opposed to the SANFL where positions are more traditional and that space doesn't really open up.

Would love to see a Showdown debut. Love it.

been to alot of magpie games this year and butchers not ready to play afl maybe never all of his goals have come from with in 10 meters out, 20 meters out hes a 50/50 chance, anything more well they go any where. beginning to think we wasted a top 10 draft pick, if he could kick straight he would be a superstar but he cant.

So going on your theory Warren Tredrea, Travis Cloke, Nick Riewoldt and ol Richo man should not have played top level footy because their kicking was erratic?

Going on what posters whose opinions I respect on this board are saying, get the kid in.

Soon.

.... get the kid in.

Soon.
Sigh! You will find razza12 has got it right. I've seen Butcher 3 times this year and he hasn't begun to look capable of playing as a forward. Except, as I said earlier, as a goalsneak once the ball has spilled to the deck.
Don't worry about the arm chopping claims a few have made, that might have been applicable twice yesterday. He just cannot hold a contested mark. And he has no obvious talent for set shots, it is just kick and hope. The crowd around me on the eastern wing saw things pretty much as I did yesterday so it's annoying to see people posting misleadingly +ve stuff.

those players can all kick a ball. 40 meters out and there a good chance its going through, butcher on the other hand, i would be happy if he kicked a point. he is the worst kick i have ever seen to play league football

Wow, I must have been at a different game. I saw a kid who was only beaten in a contest because his defender got away with clinging to him like a dodgy shirt, defenders don't get away with that in the afl. Can you remember a time where he was out marked or the defender was able to comfortably spoil one of his marking attempts?? I can't.
I saw a kid who worked his ass of to get up to the wings to create a contest then work just as hard to be a target in the forward 50. If he didn't mark it he crashed the pack which gave opportunities to our smalls and if they didn't get it he got it himself.
Sure his kicking needs work, Nobody's perfect.
I sat on the earsten side, everyone around me was very impressed with his game.

Another nick gill :(

This annoys me.

Tom Lynch and Sam Day.... Are those kids ready to play AFL footy ?? Probably not, but damn they've shown something because they've been given the opportunity. And thats without kicking goals at SANFL level.

I'd love to see Butcher come in as well! Though I won't be expecting much after the last time I saw him in our AFL jumper.

Tom lynch has been on their list for 3 years and day was already physically developed.Day had to work his way into the line up.Must have been kicking goals

To exapnd on my thoughts from yesterday (now that im posting on a computer and not an iphone) if there was one word to describe Butchers performance it would be unorthodox.

as mentioned, he has no bread and butter. Its all vegemite or boysenberry jam at this point. I dont think he took a clean 'lead-mark-kick' all day, but he did present very well. He was playing on a very good player in Todd Grima.

He kicked three goals. 2 of them were similar - ground ball collect in the pocket, evade 2-3 opponents and snap it through. The other was from a ground ball collect where he spun out of trouble and did a banana through the goals from about 25 out. He took a couple of strong grabs, including one absolutely monster contested mark in a 3-4 person pack about 30 out from goal - was a aCarey-esque attack the pack from the side and a one grab pack mark under extreme pressure. Of course he then went back and barely scrapped it in for a point (he may even have kicked it oof).

The kid has talent, but he needs to get his leads right and he needs to make the most of his opportunities. Wasnt a fantastic match but he'd be worth a crack in the Showdown. At the very least he does crash packs.

A few have mentioned Hoskin. Him and whiz kid Ben Kennedy played on each other for most of the match. Probably even. Kennedy has undoubted talent. Quick, can find the ball, took a great hanger and knows where the goals are. But he is very short. I'd hope he'd have some growth in him to push him up to 180cm. I always get nervous about players who are 173-175cm tall. Some make it. Many dont. He could end up like Shane Crawford, or he could end up like Josh Willoughby. But, you can see why people rave about him. Natural footballer.

Hoskin was alright. His first three quarters were very good, but he made 3 shocking blues in the last which cost goals. Must trust his instinct and give first time as he tried to do too much and was caught holding the ball or caused a turnover in front of goals. I think hes worth a late pick punt.

On another note, wouldnt mind having a closer look at Alex Grima. I reckon hes worth a second crack at AFL level.
