Training Pre-Season 2025 - The boys are back in town.

Hey guys are they training on Wednesday and Friday next week? I'll be able to report
The west had this quote at end of training notes article:
“The Dockers break next Thursday for the Christmas period and return on January 9.”

Also spoke about Andrew Brayshaw leaving session early after a heavy quad cork on Monday. Trained fine today but received a couple more heavy corks. Having to brush off trainers and pushed on.

This morning I had so much work piled up on my desk before I even had a chance to think the word sickie, so I only got to see the boys train for about 2ish hours (on my extra long lunch break).

Here are some notes:
  • got a better look at narkle and his separate sideline sesh. Seemed a lot more switched on, asking questions, focussing on his specific runs. looked way more comfortable being there.
  • TTHD nominees: walters, sharpy, pearce, matty j
  • fyfes kicking was beautiful at times, clearly no longer hampered by his long term foot injuries, but after seeing him with some quick hands to release murphy reid (bruce) a few times on the outer, who even cares?
  • seeing bruce in action was beautiful. how many times over the years has all of Optus stadium hid behind their hands when certain players try to kick the ball - well not with this bloke! His disposal (and pressure if he has it) is what will get him into the team in 2025.
  • and on that note, freddy is going to want to clean up his first touch quick smart because people are coming for his spot. Was very fumbly all training.
  • matty j is going to be better than whatever we hoped Cerra could be for us. He has put on good size and didn't shy away from taking on the big man himself (fyfe) in close contact pressure drills. Also impressive in run throughs, has a lot of speed and power. in some high pressure drills towards the end, he was getting quite feisty and aggressive, seems he is going to be a key driver in our level of mongrel, which I am more than happy about.
  • I don't think it's going to matter whether dogga can stick his marks or not anymore, I got to witness bolton lapping up them crumbs and wow we have been missing that
  • Isaiah Dudley is a very interesting train on decision - unless he can bring his fitness up very quickly, I'm not sure his skills are enough for us to take him on? Interested in others thoughts. He can clearly use the ball well, and reads the game well, but the dude walks/slow jogs in nearly all drills - walks to the back of the line, walks to reset, walks to space in sims. He seems to be quick with the ball in hand, can dance out of tackles, but he lacks any defensive urgency. I can see how he would be a great cheap pick up if that pressure is fixed up but can freo turn that around in a single pre-season?
  • for the love of Pav, will someone PLEASE teach davies about sun smarts. Not only was he sans-hat at one point he was also shirtless. saying my hail Mundys for that boys skin well-being.
  • In a lot of drills today, brayshaw was central but not participating the same way as others. Unclear if he's on low-contact (not wearing a hat) or practicing on field leadership/directions?
  • amiss and treacy are gigantic. It cannot be understated just how huge they are. Think of their ability to win contests when they were weedy lil fellas - now imagine that PLUS they also have the ability to crush their opponent.
That's it from me this week, heave ho!

Wow, that is an epic training report Stromy. A great run down of how the boys are going. Please keep up the good work.

Someone’s posted match sim from today

So, I’m really stoked watching that after being cooped at work today and I’m very grateful, but the traditionalist in me says Freo probably doesn’t want it’s match sim strategies / set ups posted online for other clubs to view. I know I’m being a total buzzkill but yeah enough said.

How long did Shai train/participate with the other Freo midfielders? if he did at all.
I didn't stay for the whole training, so can't say for sure - the drills I saw today appeared less defined by their lines than last week (eg - wasn't as obviously broken up into mids, fwds, defenders). I haven't seen him go head to head much against the big boys like matty j or fyfe yet, and what I have seen of him in congestion has been at forward stoppage/forward entry type stuff.

There was a drill last week where he would float between the middle group and fwd group. He also looks much shorter and slight in person than I expected. Doesn't seem to impact his tackles too much though.

Duman was on the list between 2017-2021. Spending best part of everyday with other fellas around the same age means you likely develop long term friendships.

Duman plays at Doncaster. Sounds like he is over here for some reason and the boys caught up with him at Crown.

Duman has relatives who live in Perth. I've met them. They seems really nice

I also went down yesterday, for the first time since the new construction. Parked on the wrong side, walked all the way around the ARC to get to watch the players in their warmups and sat under a small tree on the wing, getting stung by ants as I watched.

Narkle and Young were the rehab group. They kept to their regimen stretching their calves by hobbling, then running (a lot) chatting to trainer and having a few kicks of the ball. Young initially had strapping on his leg but that came off at some stage.
I only saw Darcy on the ground during line drills. He came out to give advice and encouragement to Riddle.
I liked the look of Riddle. He still has a lot of growth in him and didn’t win too many hitouts against the bigger Reidy, but the players at his feet were able to clear more times than not as a result of the contest he provided and he looks very mobile and quick to make repeat efforts.
The drills were posted on the scoreboard, so players (and watchers - there were probably about 80 on the far side plus a large contingent of family from the club room balcony watching) could keep track of what was happening.
Some of the drill names were mid-forward fast (and slow) play, tight rope and bingo kick which was a game involving inside contest and fast ball movement ending in a kick to a small net on a stick. There was much rejoicing when the net was breached.
Fyfe, O’Meara, Brayshaw, Serong, Sharp and O’Driscoll were in the mids line drills, and Jackson, Walters and Bolton always in the forwards drills. I had trouble recognising the new players, plus there were kids in the early drills getting experience. I never spotted Clark for instance - maybe a few haircuts over the break.
But of the following players I recognised, all had good moments. Sturt, Nev, Voss (on Cox - kept his feet then shrugged a strong tackle and delivered beautifully from our wing), Delean (faster than I thought), and Driz.
The schedule ended with 20 minutes 18v18, but then they added another 10 minutes before I left. I haven’t checked the video yet but with seconds to go in a quarter Driz marked a ball just outside 50 on the clubrooms side. As he looked to pass one of the players roared “just ****ing kick it Driz!” He did and the resultant pack mark (sorry couldn’t tell who) got an easy kick for goal.

Hope this keeps you going over the break. Apparently next Wednesday will be a big training session. But sometimes the last training session before Christmas is just shits and giggles.

Appreciated.

I'm really interested in the happenstantial swap of Riddle and Knobel. A developing ruck who can play a second position is a better development type for us in my opinion.

And with Nicholls having some credentials as a swingman I'm really liking the emerging flexibility we can build in the big man department. A bit of future proofing.

Thankyou for suffering ant attacks for our reading pleasure.

Bloody Clark! You can tell him by his shoulder strapping and he insists on holding a ball at the end of every drill. But Clark, Sharpy, JOM, Wagner, Wiz (and one other person I forget) keep wearing near identical kits - can't tell them apart without the binoculars. Even Aish looks similar when his hair is hidden.

I agree about Riddle! Although from where I sat (sounds like near you, judging by the ant biting) he did beat Reidy a few times on a very specific drill that faced the hill. Basically a ruck tap drill to congestion, requiring mids to get free. He's certainly shown enough at training already for me to not be so worried about the whole Knobel thing, and hoping a few of the melts about that will be funny to read back on in a year or two (you know, cos we will be premiers or b2b by then...)
