Kid is a near 200cm tall project key forward, 20 years old, missed his first pre season and 6 months of his career with a torn meniscus. Has shown more than enough at VFL level, despite having to spend most his time learning a new position. I don’t know what people’s expectations are of someone in his position, considering he won’t hit his ceiling (an extremely high ceiling) until 24-26 years old. There should be no timeline for a tall to debut, as long as they are continuing to improve on an AFL standard trajectory.

I just can’t believe two posters on here are calling him delist material and another a bust. Same with Hall I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. No more bigfooty and defending the honour of our young emerging players for me today haha

I agree that it seems crazy to think he might be delisted at seasons end but it's not. Go ask James van es or Oscar Adams. Similar picks in the draft, young talls who had injuries and they are gone

Is there anyone on this forum, or in the AFL in general, who did not know that Max needs to to do more of both?


Personally I think that his various injuries last season combined to limited him in both.


He had two games early on last year where he was moving up and around the ground a lot more and looked really good.

So for example mentioning Keeler looks good, has filled out and is catching the eye at training is in the context of a 22 y.o project ruck/forward who was a late second rounder, and hasn't played a seniors game compared to talking about Phillipou who is a highly regarded top ten player who is closing in on 40 senior games and who really showed his promise in a block of four games late in the season.

So while the discussions are good, and I understand nothing else is going on, dont take training reports as gospel, we all have our biases, our favourites and our incorrect opinions.

Hey Joffa. I really appreciate the training reports from you and all the other track watchers. Not wanting to be pedantic but it's worth mentioning that Keeler is only 20 yo, not 22 as you said. I believe that just strengthens the point you were making about him. The thought bubbles that some posters are blowing about delisting him at the end of next year if he doesn't step up are beyond ludicrous. He would be rookie listed by every other club in the comp and we should immediately allocate funds to build a monument to our stupidity at RSEA park.

At this stage I don't care if Keeler plays a single AFL game next year, nor do I care if he spuds up every second game in the VFL. As SaintWrld said, he's 5 years away from his peak and he has a massive ceiling. We just have to be patient.
My fear for him has been that he is a laconic type who really isn't all that interested in football and he wouldn't be prepared to do the things that would see him improve as a footballer over time. Track watchers have allayed those fears to an extent.
The fact he's commenced pre season with a bit more weight and he's engaged in the training drills is all I wanted to see at this point.

As for comparisons with James Van Es and Oscar Adams, Keeler is capable of the mercurial. Van Es and Adams were not.

Very good and level headed post. Yours, and all of the track watchers training reports are highly appreciated I’m sure by everyone. Very time consuming trying to catch 3 main training sessions a week I’m sure.
The more reports the better. I think it’s best to collate the information from all reports in order to paint a big picture of what’s happening. As a saints nuffie this is probably the most exciting time of the year when all the new players start emerging, until it all comes crashing down in season.
Track watchers reports are worth so much more than reports of random fox footy or herald sun reporters, who seem to go there and report the same things for every club eg. A report on new recruits Macrae and Carroll, a report of a senior well known player hill, a report on our brightest young player pou, and a report on 2 or 3 players who played less than 10 games last year and are looking to break out such as Arie, Hastie, Garcia. They wouldn’t even know guys like Irish, Hall, Keeler, Gus existed. And literally every single one of their reports for every club follow this same formula.
Keep up the training reports guys it’s much appreciated and the only reason I tune in to bigfooty during the off season.

IMHO.......lot's.

Hopefully all from CHF.......he's a massive kick.

It's been quite a while since he's had a full uninterrupted season.......if at all.

He's looking a million bucks atm......has added 6 kg and was at times in the main group yesterday.

I'm keeping my powder dry atm but sooner than later(if he's not impacted by injury) he will tear it apart.

yes sorry about that, correct Keeler is 20, the same age as Phillipou, but should be seen in a totally different context. It's like saying Dodson should be gone by 21 if he is not dominating the AFL. These big blokes take time. Even Roh wasn't picked up until about 23 and then was know as 'the Prospect' because thats exactly what he still was.

Some need to cool their jets and let the kids develop. We are all success starved but we can't rush the big guys.

Correct. I remember several years ago when quite a few people were demanding Koby Stevens come in on the back of outstanding VFL form, but he'd played at senior level quite a bit by then and never quite delivered. I think it's a good rule to take VFL form into account, but it's not the only thing to take into account.

I once saw him look me in the eye from the television set whilst he predicted The Knack were going go be bigger than The Beatles.

If the AFL was a horse race it would be like having 10 horses across the track at the finish line with less then a length seperating them.

Looking at it, Essendons probably the next team one would likely pick outside the obvious three and they could easily rack up 10 or so wins next year.

Love what you provide mate. I find it odd that there is backlash from people not in attendance. You’d think it would be people seeing different things at the same venue that might have a difference of opinion.
 
The key to how good we will be, or not be, in 2026, ignoring injuries, is how much some of younger players step up including Max.

Our midfield was our Achilles Heel last year, but it while not being elite by any means, should at least be quite competitive in 2025 as we have improved its quality and depth.

Max, Nas, Owens, Sharman, Caminiti, Pou, Henry, Windy, Wilson...as well as players like possibly Arie, Keeler etc will be the group that determines if we rise, or just tread water. I think they will improve as a group, but just do not know if it will be in 2025 or 2026.
