Hey don't let the truth get in the way of a good story

Membrey basically won a VFL game himself for us this year.

I'm not knocking Keeler at all, I'm hoping to get down to training early next year and looking forward to seeing how he's going, but just pointing out it's a long way from looking good at training to playing well at AFL level. If he makes it I'll be absolutely rapt, as others have pointed out his time in the backline has hopefully helped his development and he looks lean and fit which is fantastic. Just think we should be prepared for him not making it because it's a real possibility, same with Heath.

My tip is he plays round one.

We wanted Soldo to play tandem with Marshall. We've also jumped on Boyd after about three training sessions so obviously love what we've seen.

I know some disagree but I reckon Ross wants to use Marshall up forward more. I wonder how Boyd goes forward and back? He looks a bit like Briggs from GWS.
I think Ross showed that he definitely wants Row forward when he brought Campbell in against OMac

I think Briggs has a bit more spring and athleticism than Boyd. IMO Nank is a good comparison as a sub-200cm ruck without elite athleticism - just a pure competitor

Kevin Sheehan said Boyd is a capable defender

I also saw him take some nice contested marks up forward in the SANFL so maybe he'd be ok when Row has his time in the ruck

He won a VFL game. Others, he was unsighted. It's not a knock on him, its a knock on Sandy as a team

I fully agree with you on Keeler, but I'd rather be optimistic than pessimistic about his progress. This case seems different to the likes of Allison (who did well in time trial but still looked shockingly bad at training in simulation drills). Keeler seems to have shown improvement in ALL areas

Him coming good would solve a whole host of problems for our senior side

I'm going to miss Members , so underrated and an easy target for some.
A class individual and a great servant for the club
I will miss him too. One of my favourite players

Wasn't targeting him in the slightest, it was a knock on Sandy being unable to have a functioning forward connection

Once Membrey was in the AFL side and receiving the ball from the likes of Nas and Sincs, his true capabilities shone

I hope Keeler plays in front Boyd, with Marshall to do the majority of the rucking. Keeler as he matures will offer more forward than Marshall and be our future key forward/2nd ruckman.

Throughout his SANFL games Boyd didnt rest forward that Im aware, so Id hope Boyd only plays if Marshall is out. Even then Max Heath should be considered.

True, one good VFL game

Matt Allison must be close to a debut after his 5 goal haul then?
Really , if you knew anything about me you wouldn't be pulling out the Allison card , it was the more like people like you who go to training that were banging on about Allison, it sure wasn't me

PS , I did say people like you , I don't mean you as such

Tim actually played 19 senior games last year, including rounds 2 to 10. He was just off his game in my opinion. Stats don't always show form, but he had quite a few one and no-goal games, and just lacked confidence and energy.

He came back in for the rest of the season from round 18, but he only kicked 1 goal from his first 2 games back, a pretty underwhelming return. It was the 23 possession 5 goal game against the lowly Eagles that seemed to set him up for a strong finish.

I don't disagree that it can be hard for forwards to show their capabilities at Sandy with a patchwork team and a windy home ground. I'll miss him too for his reliability, smooth way of moving, providing an option up the ground and some great work dropping back at the end of quarters/games. And he always seemed like he'd be a good guy worth spending time around.

Certainly some differing opinions on Boyd around here, some saying he'll play round one, others saying he won't debut unless Roma gets injured, some saying he might not even play then!
I guess we can’t tell until match sim starts and probably even then we need to see him up against oppo. From what I’ve seen he has a genuine crack, runs hard and pretty well (at least endurance wise, some feat carrying around those tree trunk legs), and is vocal. At the same time, his weaknesses might be exposed up in the big league.

Didn't Hotton kick 5 last season for Sandy?

To gauge anyone on Sandy form from last season is a bit irrelevant now. Membrey is gone and I hope he goes well at the Pies. Keeler looks like he has worked hard over the off season so far to fill out and has been prominent so far at training giving some hope that he is improving.

I apologise if that view (and thats all it is, an opinion) upsets some and they feel the need to disparage some on here who are in the fortunate position to get to training. There is always the caveat that it is a personal opinion. From a personal perspective, I am just a mug punter that gets much more wrong than right and me going to training is for my own enjoyment, not out of some misplaced utilitarianism or some superiority over anyone else, or a moral obligation to post training reports.

As we are all on BF and talk football even in the off season, I opine that we are all mad Saints football nuffies and that it is only fair that I put down my thoughts about what I am seeing. Blokes like kick it lace out, the Jackal, Saintmike65 and others who post here about training will have differing views on individuals and how training is going. Probably best to triangulate all the reports and see if there is any common ground/views/opinion on certain players or training standards, and also the context in which we are discussing the subject.

So for example mentioning Keeler looks good, has filled out and is catching the eye at training is in the context of a 22 y.o project ruck/forward who was a late second rounder, and hasn't played a seniors game compared to talking about Phillipou who is a highly regarded top ten player who is closing in on 40 senior games and who really showed his promise in a block of four games late in the season.

So while the discussions are good, and I understand nothing else is going on, dont take training reports as gospel, we all have our biases, our favourites and our incorrect opinions.

Perfectly fine to talk up players in December.

Will be a few months before anyone can prove you wrong, and there are only a few people on BF who track what other posters say and can remember what a poster said a few hours/days/weeks/months ago.

Absolutely pumped to hear the track reporters are anticipating rising star noms for Keeler and Hall by round 5 next year.
To all you supercoach lurkers from visiting from other boards, get them in your team while they're cheap! Then get a life!
