Yep, it was (as always) interesting listening to his thoughts. Hamling could be a good pick up.
Not sold on Jordan - who goes out for his inclusion??
Grundy in - Hickey out
Adams in - Mills out
Hamling in - Melican / Francis.. (good and pretty even competition for that spot)
Jordan in - Campbell, McInerney out.. Id rather see both Campbell and JMac playing
Jordan won't be getting in over those two.

I think Jordan is more of a Stephens reset. Similar stature and career progression, actually midfielders who just haven't been able to crack in. I think Jordan has definitely showed more in the guts at VFL level and I think that is where the coaches are hoping to play him - competing for a serious spot with Angus and/or at worst giving relief to a battling but underperforming midfield. Using him as a winger would just be a break glass I rekn. Jmac has got to be the most underrated winger in the league, he's close to one of the best imo and an absolute lock, and no one is touching Campbell. And don't forget, wing is probably Guldens best position too.

Deffs a bit of romanticism around playing new recruits, but nothing wrong with Jordan playing VFL which I think is where he'll start. It's a long season and there will be plenty of times he gets called upon. Same goes for Hamling, I would be disappointed seeing Melican miss out if he is in similar knick to last year.

Hayward and Wicks are the other two whip coppers who will be a lock. Wicks especially, with an uninterrupted preseason, will be an absolute beast this year I rekn.

Florent's going to be a pretty good small defender imo

Got caught cold a few times whilst his head comes up with the decision coming out of fullback or deep defence. I’m not sold on it.

When he breaks it open he’s good but sometimes runs into trouble and I don’t want to see that 20 out from goal.

Thanks caesar88 big effort. Good reporting by McKirdy, assuming he's correct.
Sounds like the best 23 is anything but automatic, at least in some positions.
This was his best 23.

There is really only one glaring error there and I think it's having neither Hamling or Melican in the team. I can't imagine us going ham in the off-season to find key defenders if we weren't gonna play them when we have them. One of those two would almost certainly have to be in defence, in place of Roberts.

If Roberts has really been that impressive then he could maybe be on the bench. Looking at that bench and McKirdy's assessments, only one of them (Rowbottom) would be settled. If Roberts is squeezed into that bench, who from the rest makes way to be sub? Is it Florent, who would be the next-most-settled in my eyes, but would be most similar to Roberts? Would one of the two wingmen in Campbell or McInerney get edged out? Or does Hayward miss?

All of the above makes me think the talls situation (aside from Melican vs Hamling) is pretty settled and the spots up for grabs will most likely be for ground level types. All eyes will be on those flankers at either end (Roberts/Florent/Campbell/McInerney in the back half, Hayward/Wicks/Fox in the front half.)

Personally, I think the glaring error is the absence of Sam Reid.

If (?) he's fit, I see absolutely no way Armatey plays ahead of Reid.

And less glaring, but nonetheless a bit baffling - Jordon was a constant fringe player at Melbourne (and regular whipping boy on their BF Board). I'm not quite sure what makes him best XXIII at the Swans.

It's all pre-season hype until proven otherwise. And the ones who have to prove otherwise are the players at the centre of all the hype. But big pre-seasons can be consequential to players on the fringes either side of the best 22. Jordon and Amartey could be strong chances for best 22 because while they are fringe players, so are the players whose spots they're after (Reid, Campbell etc.)

I would honestly say our best 22 has no fringe players except for maybe Amartey if you put him in there.

Only way Jordan or anyone else gets in is injury, players managed, or a very long run of poor form imo.

Dunno why some keep mentioning Jmac... He's easily in discussion for most effective wingers in the game. Campbell not far behind.

I kind of agree - but every year, Round 1 (or in this case, 0) brings a selection surprise.

Quite often a youngster debuts, or a stalwart misses.

Injuries or something unusual happening in the preseason games aside. Jordon will be in the team in round 1.

I like Juzzy but I don't really rate his footy lately so he's fighting for a spot imo

We'll move away from Cunningham eventually too it's just a matter of when

No way Campbell's left boot is not in the side. Not a fringe player

I guess it depends what one considers a "fringe player" to be. It's often used to describe players who are just outside the best 22, but I think it's just as apt to describe players who are just inside the best 22 as fringe players too. Some on the fringes of gaining a spot, some on the fringes of losing a spot.

If the top six from the chasing pack - say Jordon, Roberts, Sheldrick, Hamling, Francis and Fox - are trending upwards, then the bottom six from the best 22 - say Amartey, Campbell, Hayward, McInerney, Melican and Wicks - also need to keep trending upwards to keep some distance between themselves and that chasing pack.

I get what you're saying BUT Reid most likely only has this season left. I would start out with Amartey but make sure he knew Reid was breathing down his neck. Maybe Buller too.
The big surprise might be Ladhams playing instead of Amartey.

I would be surprised if Buller plays before Reid but we'll see

I do think there's a solid chance Amartey gets first go at it

All I care about is playing the players who are fit, to start the season at least.

We have great depth now, then we should use it. There isn't a huge difference between most of our key position players.

If Francis is fit and flying, I would rather we pinched hit with him for a game in the forwards than play someone who isn't as healthy or is out of form.

I wouldn't be surprised either if Ladhams is picked for the first game.

As for Reid, I would be very patient with him. He could be a real bonus in the second half of the year, there is no need to push him hard early.

Understand what you’re saying KC, buf if Geelong took the “don’t play blokes at the back-end of their career” approach, we’d be the 2022 premiers….

Sorry C88, you know I have to pull you up. Unless he turns it around and develops some tricks Rowy is an 18-26 fringe player. We cannot afford another mediocre year from our mids.
