That was probably the most extreme example of exploiting our weaknesses as well. Basically the only way we were going to win tonight was to get out forward half game going. And the things they did structurally just made that impossible.

It kind of shows we are a bit imbalanced.

commiserations y'all

getting belted in a big match sucks don't i know that lmao

think u just ran out of steam playing in 3 intense finals matches back to back to back and it was a step too far

y'all will be back though and i wouldn't be surprised if u do end up winning a premiership in a year or 2

sending big hugs your way

Matho had our second most contested possessions. 1 less than Neale 🤣

Matho is best 22. Proof is in the playing. If you are still saying he isn't you are just stuck in a dialogue and you need to look at the evidence.

He cared, he tried and he can hold his head up when others can't.

Yeah playing our 11th final in 4 years we should at least be competitive

Geelong lost their prelim by 86 last year I think it’s just footy sometimes. These things are never linear and expecting it to be will only lead to more disappointment. We were outclassed tonight by a much stronger outfit.

Well there goes my dream of a Brisbane/Sydney GF.

Props for making it this far when most people had written you off before the finals even started.

Real breakout game from Rayner until the injury. Wouldn't have mind seeing him unleashed in the middle a bit more.

Land Dunkley and the sky is the limit next year, particularly with the MCG hoodoo off your back, and Rayner and Hipwood entering the season with some confidence after their long-term injuries.

IMO it is as simple as we don't have a good enough first string midfield. We basically need Choc to play brownlow footy every week. Get Dunkley and Ashcroft in and sure up the midfield and it'll go a long way.

Making a prelim from 6th isn't a bad effort. I'll take that.

We came up (yet again) against the pre-destined side in the finals this year and they had way too much experience + out-bodied us + had clean skills + stuck all their tackles + had great coaching strategy. Hopefully one of these years we get one of the feeble teams like Collingwood did last week.
Re the bolded - I was of he understanding at the start of the year that anything less than a PF win was a failure - now its great we won two big finals but to then get pantsed the way did without so much of a whimper and so many players barely interested in anything and not even trying - that maybe harsh, but there were many efforts that were absymal. Now dont tell me they care if they dont try b/c it was obvious to all that was just not the case.

Cuts a little deeper sitting around watching the post game and seeing so many players and their family / friends all laughing and being jovial - geez, save it for well after the game when cameras arent around b/c this shows that they are pretty content with where there at. A few dont look like they are hurting at all and as I often say - I think fans are more invested in the Lions than some of the players and certainly there families/freinds who'll be donning whatever club's scarf /colors of a team they go to. Just not a good look.

I
It's gonna be a rough train ride home tonight :(
I got home before the game was over. Train was 1/3 full … all Lions supporters.

What a game for Mulligan! After being dropped for 2 weeks, he makes a strong showing in the VFL and now is BOG in the prelim!

I hope Fagan moves away from the three talls with McStay leaving. We cannot generate enough pressure to keep the ball locked in. Time for a rethink of our best 22 and our play style. Its gone stale and teams have worked it out. We need some new ideas to match the new talent entering the team over the offseason.

One interesting thing though, in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, our losses in the finals have only been to teams that made the grand final. I know there's a high percentage of that when you finish top 4, or even top 8, but not one loss has been to a team that didn't make it to the big dance. Doesn't help the feeling much right now.
Also interesting in the two finals this year, we were without 1 tall timber, there has to be something in that.

The worst part about the game was that there was just nothing to hang the hat on. We got smashed in the middle. Our forwards were constantly out positioned and out marked. The only shining light was Andrews did a good job on Hawkins.

Geelong played a spare behind the ball all night and they used it to great effect, putting bodies on our talls to stop the run of any of our forwards getting a look.

Our spare in reverse was mostly Ah Chee all night, and he did not play the role well. Spent most of the night too close to the contest and with the way the ball was coming out of the mids by Geelong should of been 50m off the ball rather then 20m.

Not sure if they talked about it on the coverage, but the cats turned their spare In defence into a switch all night and they were even more out down the ground. Constantly had an extra player on the fat side of the contest and we just never managed to move our zone across all night.

Hopefully Rayner is okay.

robbo retired from the lions. (likely to go to another club?)

fages didn't let him announce to fans last week I guess, didn't really like that in his post.

anyway, loved him at our club, good luck to him in his next part of his life!

What post?

Just because they weren't hurting on camera doesn't mean they won't be hurting at all

I had an appearance in the GF as a pass mark pre-season. I adjusted expectations as the season progressed once I got a feel for what we were working with, eg huge drop-offs in form from multiple key players etc

For people who hadn't re-assessed their expectations, then I feel sorry for how you're feeling tonight.

I think it has been a good season.

I won't comment on your thoughts on our players post-game, because it is a ridiculous and dogshit take.

71 points off being in a grand final. Let alone winning one. We are good but not good enough unfortunately. Smashed with ease tonight.

I dont mind players being happy. I dont doubt they didnt try their best. We were just not good enough. They probably have a lot more regret in their hearts than we will ever have. I'd rather they be happy and celebrate however little time they have left with each other before some of them depart to other lists or out of the AFL. They are the fourth best team this year. They have tried their hardest for 9 months. Let them enjoy the remaining week they have left together. They will have a lifetime to rue the missed opportunities, particularly if they are near the end of their career and never get another chance again

didnt bode well when payne and dizzy were the only 2 capable of taking a proper contested mark in the first quarter

couldnt really get the birds eye view from where i sat but looked like neale was held or blocked out of about every stoppage. probably the least impactful game ive seen from either him or hugh. entire midfield just got spanked really and thats where i thought we would have an advantage over geelong if anywehre

plenty of good signs from the kids. rayner in particular looked like the only one who had any composure under pressure before being subbed off, dev pressure was great, payne clunked some great marks and didnt make any silly mistakes.
