The bright lights are that Dev belongs. Payne is well worth persevering with and looks on the improve already. Harris seems to be getting back to his better form. Wilmot definitely never gave up and really tried to inject some run even when the game was over. Only 18 so he could be good. Kiddy is still able to deliver it lace out when under pressure . Hipwood will be better next year. Rayner is a future Captain and was the one guy who looked just as classy as the Geelong guns ( outside of Neale).

Our worst 6 players aren't up to par with winning a flag and strengthening the list somehow should be the priority now.

Thoughts on luggage on the inside ? Doesn't have the strength.

Hugh is 24. Most of our team looked out-bodied by them tonight. Half their team is almost 10years older than Hugh. The Cats side is an outlier in the comp. He is fine against every other team.

One interesting thing though, in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, our losses in the finals have only been to teams that made the grand final. I know there's a high percentage of that when you finish top 4, or even top 8, but not one loss has been to a team that didn't make it to the big dance. Doesn't help the feeling much right now.
Also interesting in the two finals this year, we were without 1 tall timber, there has to be something in that.
If you exclude EFs, each year 5/7 finals are won by grand finalists.

Matho is best 22. Proof is in the playing. If you are still saying he isn't you are just stuck in a dialogue and you need to look at the evidence.

He cared, he tried and he can hold his head up when others can't.
It’s not really like the team went any better when he come on.
If we can get Dunkley and Lyons can get himself fit he will find himself in the 2’s.

I had an appearance in the GF as a pass mark pre-season. I adjusted expectations as the season progressed once I got a feel for what we were working with, eg huge drop-offs in form from multiple key players etc

For people who hadn't re-assessed their expectations, then I feel sorry for how you're feeling tonight.

I think it has been a good season.

I won't comment on your thoughts on our players post-game, because it is a ridiculous and dogshit take.
Agree with most of your post but you should consider pulling your head in

Very disappointed he didn't get the send off he deserved. Even if he was down on performance this year, Robbo has been an absolutely class person to have at the club and that should have been recognised. All the best to you Robbo, you'll always be a Lion to us.
Didn’t get a send off…. would you have played him tonight to get a send off?
Pretty poor by Mitch… sink the boots in the second the siren goes. I love Robbo but that is pretty poor taste on his behalf.

I'm not saying it hasn't been a good season. What an amazing start of the year and then wheels fell off, a lot to do with a stubborn coach who wouldn't adjust the team - which he basically admitted and then some poor timing injuries (happens to all teams) and the covid debacle which I think we still could've won had Matho played.

As for post game stuff - a lot of people hate seeing players joking with opposition players after a smashing or even close loss, but your season is done after being given your biggest hiding of the year on the second biggest stage in front of national audience and your laughing and carrying on in the rooms without a care. Nothing wrong with not wanting to see players hurting. to say that is a dogshit take is ridiculous in itself.

My 2c worth from sitting on level 1 (until 3q time anyway).

Game was over early. Wasn’t unsurprised but they just were bigger and stronger and looked to find loose men whereas we had no run whatsoever, all kicks were down the line, and any attempt to kick inside was turned over.

McStay had an all time Barry Crocker. Fagan should have told him to sit on the wing away from the action so Stewart couldn’t get another uncontested mark.

The 3 talls thing might have run it’s race I reckon. The small forwards from Geelong just have so much pace and apply pressure. Charlie’s good when things are going our way, but need someone else down there like a Stengle to always be on the move and keep the pressure up.

Disappointing way to go out, we sort of always looked like we were just a beat off the top teams. And Geelong really gave us a lesson.

My take wasn't that he wanted a formal 'final game' send off - rather an opportunity to announce it to the fans.

Obvously he did so tonight b/c there are no more games to be played. Why deny him that right, unless of course Fagan wanted him to hold off in case we made the GF and there was still a chance that Mitch could have been selected once again.

We actually want our players to remain neutral-positive, otherwise you get swings of emotion like we saw in 2019-20. Charlie used to have waves of emotion from dropping his head to elation. He has changed completely in the past 18 months. I don't understand the people who want to die on the hill of - why don't our players look sad enough.

Exactly… the season wasn’t done. Why announce you are leaving. No where does it state he is retiring? The way people carry on around here about
Mcstay leaving…. Could you imagine the reaction if Mitch said he was going to another club but pulls on the jumper for granny day?

Payne, Rayner, Dev, Kiddy and Hippy get the votes. Only ones with acceptable effort tonight

Gardiner did well against Cameron, come off it. Thought Andrews was decent most of the game too.

The midfield was the issue, hard to fault the defence or the forwards when the midfield were (literally) dropping the ball.

20% of our disposals were turnovers. That’s indefensible.

So a dedicated servant of the club was denied the right to announce his retirement and had to just disappear.

That's not right.

And why? So he doesn't distract from the prelim? That worked out well didn't it.

Other clubs celebrate players with careers as great at Mitchs. Embarrassed that our club wants him to simply fade away.

Really sad that a heavily held out Neale was our biggest disposal getter with 20 disposals.😢
HE NEEDS HELP, NOW!
the idea was lyons as his right hand man like we've seen in the past.

a duo of those two in prime, berry coming in and out, mccluggage making appearances etc. ahhh

the dream will change over off-season, exciting times ahead!~

Bit of an overreaction surely? Other clubs celebrate players when the season is over AND they are not going to another club… Mitch hasn’t said he is retiring…

Just an assumption but Robinson was right on the cusp of best 22 so may have been called up again in the event of injury or selection changes had we made the grand final

They probably could have announced it as his last game at the Gabba and carried him out though

See this is exactly why what Mitch has done is a bit unprofessional as it is confusing people. He hasn't said he is retiring, yet that is what the majority of people are going to think. Players who aren't retiring don't generally get to do big "I'm leaving" announcement - name one.
