Re Scotch and the AFL players in their lineup - are they doing a Haileybury?

From my count they only have 4

Barlow - is an Old Scotch boy
Gilbee - is apparently really enjoying it, he has been out injured the past couple of weeks but has been down there running water which is great.
Lower - Came with Gilbee but has only played once (injuries)
Houlihan - Been there for years

Only 4. Wish we had only 4. In fact I wish we had 1!

3 of them straight out of the AFL which his a big advantage. As long as they buy in then good luck to them I reckon. Obviously some good networks at Scotch.

Might be wrong but think Hill and Neaves might have been on AFL lists at some stage also. At present Scotch have the best list in ‘A’ grade.

As good as it is....Its not the top 6 players that count the most, its the bottom 6.
Thats why Xavs have been so consistent over the years.

Really suprised to not see Harry Haley of Dela get a gig in the VAFA top 30 .. he'd be a walk up start for mine... Since his jump into the seniors, he has really come into some good form over the past 2 or 3 weeks and will be a force to be reckoned with if Dela do make the finals

I'd also have Brendan Goss in the top 10 - he truly is a goal kicking sensation and should be rewarded for such an outstanding season thus far..

what about merrington? and rimington?

merrington should be a shoe in and caven is a superstar, extremely stiff!!

clearly those 2 in the best 30 players imo
Fascinating discussion - actually think you could throw a blanket on 75 players as the top ones, petty much in any order. Why we have a great competition. Always interesting to talk with opposition clubs, who they rate at your club/tag etc.

Well done to the author. This is very subjective and no 2 people would agree. As we see our own players every week it’s natural we might have a slightly biased opinion towards our own. On the other hand as we only see the opposition players twice a year we can only judge them on those games.

As far as my own club goes Tom Humphrey should be higher and Jake Williams should be in there somewhere. Allan from Xavs and McQ-M from Carey amongst a number who might be stiff to miss out.

Regarding the Merrington & Caven exclusions - Caven should be a certainty. Merrington has only played 3 games only in 2013 and goal less in 2 of those. Perhaps that was taken into account but if up and about he is deserving of a place.

Amazing how teams such as Bernies keep talking up their ' Superstars' with very few 'team' wins on the board or even Premier Section games played in Merringtons case.

Blues with four players named is further examples of how some names are just thrown up by the masses as superstars yet they have won how many games in the past season and a half?..

Players and there are plenty of them who play week in week out winning games for their teams when it counts over the past 18 months should feature more prominently in the Top 30.

The St Bedes story this year is incredible.

Before the season they were done and dusted. Relegation certainties. Come out round 1 and lose by 20 goals to a team coming up from B grade. Everyone assumed it was going to be a horrible, horrible year.

3 months later they have beaten every team above them! They are near finals certainties and could definitely take out the competition. In the last 5 weeks they have beaten de la, blacks and xavier.

An incredible turn around and good luck to the boys. A lot of other teams players would have jumped off the second things started looking bleak but to their character they chose to stay and it is paying dividends.

When you play Beauy again i hope you really give it to them

From March 24th:

St Bede's very busy picking up a number of other VAFA club's players - some pretty useful players too from Ormond, Oakleigh and Hampton. Interesting to see how many of these line up in their seniors.

Definitely tuned in to Collegians idea of Cam Lee to Prem A from Werribee.
Doherty x 2 (Oakleigh), Barnes and Bond from Ormond and Mangoni from Mazenod have all played majority of games. Great recruiting.

Based on the even nature of the comp this year, it appears as though 11 wins will be enough to make finals. All clubs bar Carey are still a chance of making it but require the following from the remaining 7 games:

Blues - 7 wins
Bernards - 7 wins
Beauy - 6 wins
Collegians - 6 wins
Scotch - 5 wins
St. Bedes - 4 wins
De La - 4 wins
Blacks - 3 wins
Xavs - 3 wins

Pretty wide open!

Overall they are in a much better position compared to preseason 2012...Yes the midfield is not the 2011 model but they've a good structure and some quality. Plenty of youth with TAC experience and had two U/19 teams in finals last year. Recruits fitting in and have some top level players returning from travel and injury. Good coaching group and changes off field to admin side will make the total package stronger. Add some Colllingwood listed players who will play when available and they do have upside.from finishing 6th last year.

Back in March it was a case of very few believers on this thread and no doubt more so after Round 1 at Beauy..but those closer to Brindisi Street knew what was coming.

For what its worth, Lacey rated the most important player at Blacks is an interesting one, reckon there might be a handful ahead of him but looks like opposition clubs haven't spotted them yet....

Uni Oval has been closed indefinitely, Matt Torney from Uni Blues spent 12 nights in hospital with a badly infected leg which required a skin graft after being scratched by a boot stud in a home game.

So as part of the redevelopment are they re-doing the playing surface as well?

No point having a shiny new pavilion if no games can be played there to enjoy it!

Can any Snowdogs confirm of there is any truth in the rumour that St Bernards have sacked Chris Tankard?

The old bloke driving the excavator told me on Saturday morning that the big hole in the ground where the Pavvy redevelopment site is under construction filled up with water a few weeks ago and became toxic. Uni Blues played Old Carey at Princes Park No.1 Oval last round. The Uni Oval is being tested to determine the source of the contamination.

its the traffic on it that is the real killer atleast 2 games every sat & the girls play 3 games there every 2nd week on a sunday plus training. maybe all 3 clubs give up a home game or 2 a yr to try to keep it past june?

From VAFA website:

The St Bernard's Football Club have ask Chris Tankard to step down from his role as senior coach. See the statement from the club below:

Effective Tuesday this week the Football Club Committee accepted the recommendation of the football sub-committee, and asked senior coach Chris Tankard to step down from his role, which Chris has done.

The Football Club Committee made this difficult decision after careful consideration of a range of issues, particularly the view that we wanted our team coached in a different style, with more effective communication and an approach that would maximise the senior team’s performance for the remainder of this season.

We would like to thank Chris for all his hard work in the last three and a half years, which included our return to Premier Section in 2012, and wish him all the very best in the future.

Assistant Coach Nick Mitchell a former AFL player, St Bernards 2002 A grade premiership captain and former coach of Old Geelong, has accepted the role as caretaker coach for the remaining seven games of the year.

We look forward to Nick and his team of assistant coaches working closely with the playing the group to do their very best, and as always, proudly represent the St Bernard’s Football Club.

Interesting to see Gilbo is saddling up for the E.J Whitten legends game but couldn't put his hand up to play for the state or saddle up for the cards recently.
