Instead they bring in blokes from higher competitions to top up an already strong list. So if the rest of think that developing from within is the going to match it with Xavs anymore then we are kidding ourselves. Scotch and Blacks seem to have caught on – the rest of us have been a bit slow. St Bedes did well with essentially a homegrown team but the GF result shows the gap between Xavs and the rest. A shame but that’s the way ‘A’ grade seems to be going. I guess we either get with the program or be prepared to just make up the numbers or play in the lower grades. Of course trying to attract ‘outsider’ to you club to play for nothing is another major challenge with the ridiculous money on offer elsewhere.

This years Xavs Premiership side had 3 non-oldboys and the 2010 side had 2. That seems pretty homegrown to me!

these ex afl or rookie listed players played in 2013 tell me if theres more a.pattison ,f.watts ,b.mcgrath ,e.barlow
,l.gilbee
,s.neaves ,a.houlihan ,m.passador ,t.croad ,n.ries ,m.allan, m.ball, a.bentick ,r.houlihan ,a.merrington ,r.young ,c.howat, m.laidlaw ,l.casey-leigh

Sorry I probably didn’t explain that too well. I meant they do not rely on players that have come through there 19s the way other clubs do. For example this year amongst others they picked up Tagliabue from country NSW, Kennedy and Waller from the VFL. In recent seasons the Ambrose brothers, Biddlecome, Colbert and plenty of others from the VFL and even Ball, Shaw, Allen straight from AFL lists. Not one U19’s player from the 2011 or 2102 GF sides played in any of the finals. All power to them for being able to do it. They do it better than anyone and clearly rest of us have some catching up to do.

They are not the only club to follow that model. They just do it better.

I guess success attracts players. The enhanced chance of being a premiership player is a mighty incentive. As is having a vast network of business interests that can find employment.

I see that next season will have a GF for Premier A on a Saturday again, one week after everyone else finishes, same as the season just gone. Wasn't a fan of that this year.

At least its only two byes.

Yep, both good appointments! Heard great things about Stevie.

How about recruitment. I've been told blacks have lost a couple of key players and recruited a good young kid from Swan Hill. Any others?
Who did you hear they have lost and gained? any names

Johnson tore his calf off the bone in the final against Scotchies. McCauley is also done, blacks had to nurse him through the year.

Foster will return after a year on the sidelines. Is probably the balcks best player.

Since preseason is just around the corner.....is there any news on player movements?

Would love to advise of confirmed player arrivals but at this early stage I don’t think we could confidently say we have any locked in for next season just yet. Well done to any clubs that have and it would be great to get news of confirmed arrivals. But please substantiate as posting things like “gun from the bush” or “ex star player coming back home” really adds very little.

One thing I know for sure is that my club (and plenty of other VAFA clubs) will once again be r*ped by suburban and country clubs throwing obscene $ around. Just gets harder and harder every year to both attract and retain players. I dip my lid to clubs like Xavs who manage to not just hang on to them but top up with quality players year after year.

Really? I don't think Xavs perform any miracles mate, when something is too good to be true it is usually because it is not. Maybe this debate has been had too many times but i am so surprised at the unquestioning admiration paid to Old Xavier. Personally i have heard too many stories of them breaking the most fundamental law of the vafa to jump on that boat.

It is so easy to put that comment to rest.
Name one player at Xavs who is so integral to their premiership win this year that the club (or supporter) would pay to keep them at the club and not pay the other 10 or so key players. unless you are suggesting they all get paid.
Also, imagine the Old Xavs recruiter talking to a potential player,
Potential player:"can you put me on the payroll if I play at your club"
OX recruiter: " mate, there are 10 players now who are at least as good as you and we don't pay them. What I can do is offer the opportunity to play finals every year and our record suggests we are a good chance to win a premiership in any year. It's called a winning culture and we are not arrogant because arrogance breeds malcontents and a trip to B grade"
Potential player:"I'm in. Don't worry about money"
Xavs are the club least likely to pay players! and your comment smacks of jealousy, pure and simple.

Xavs to go solo with Dom Berry taking the coaching reigns.

that was very on the cards all along, from an outsiders view it looks like nick was there to help ease dom into.

i see in the article they said it will be pretty much the same list, any thoughts on gossy giving the vfl a crack? this would also mean matty ball will be going around again.

supapo retired whats the bet he plays in a clubbies premiership in the next couple of years

Agree. Heard Nick on Inner FM say after the granny that he was seriously thinking of moving on. Apparently Dom took charge of the mid week training this year. Was surprised he has never coached in his own right before though. I'm sure he'll have a strong support team.

Front page Bairnsdale Advertiser, Bairnsdale FC have signed Matt Hine, Sam Pickett, Al Roberts and Jack Vickers, all senior De La players.

Our country cousins may have jumped the gun in announcing Matt Hine. He has not signed and I’m told by those in the know that he has already been training with and committed to De La for 2014. Could be wrong and I guess time will tell.

The Roberts is not the gun senior player Nick but Al – a 2s/3s player who has never played a senior game. Vickers a handy type but hardly irreplaceable. Pickett however is a huge loss. Gun forward with some real x factor.
