Premier A - 2015

Footscray and Richmond have the bye in VFL so Scotch get 2 back (1 from Footscray and 1 from Richmond) as well as 2 or 3 back from injury. Blues v Scotch will be a cracker. Blacks also get Kruse (i think) from Richmond - will strengthen them greatly for game against Bernards.
Who do Scotch get back from Richmond?

Could not disagree any more strongly Canada. OT and Bernards, at this point, clearly well ahead of teams 3 to 7.

Think that the early wins by these teams will def ensure they play finals. But I think a full strength Blues or Carey are more than capable of beating them come finals time.

Carey full strength def. Their best dozen if fit are all ex AFL, VFL.
Then 13-22 are solid. It's when 6-8 are missing that they start to struggle.

Almost impossible for DLS at 1-8 to avoid relegation, but great effort today to go down by 5 points against the Xavs who has Luke Ball playing and Wynne back in from VFL duties. Certainly the best bottom team we've had for a while.

Only Scotch could stop DLS and Beauy heading to B.
Not much between 1-7 IMO on any given day.

Scotch have 2 games and % on De La which means even if Scotch don’t win another game De La need to win 3 more. Not sure I can see that happening to be honest. The Bellers not playing that badly but have simply forgotten how to win. Nothing to show for 2 pretty good games against Collegians and Xavs with another loss by a kick today. Good sides win the close ones and the inability to get over the line in these games looks likely to consign them to B grade.

I hope you hang on if only for the SKOB v Bellers clash for the 'BF Bragging Rights Trophy'. :D

While you cant take much away from practice game results we did get over them in March (probably the only game they will lose in 2015). We also have a distinct edge as far as ‘A’ grade history goes but if we were to play next week and you had to bet your life on the result I would backing the SKOBs to get the points. It looks likely we will be swapping grades next year.

Anybody see De La v Xavs game? Did Luke Ball impact the game much?

Doubt we have seen a player with a better footballing resume ever play in the VAFA. 200 plus games, # 2 draft pick, premiership and a B&F at St.Kilda. But he did retire because his body was shot so perhaps no real surprise that he looked very slow and underdone yesterday.

When asked on the Ch 9 footy show this morning how he said something like he was terrible early and improved marginally as the game went on. That's a pretty fair assessment and he had no real impact. Of course you could never write off a player of his obvious quality and his mere presence has to be worth something.

Likely maybe. However this premise is based on skobs winning finals. Which is no lay down misere

Theres been plenty of guys of Balls quality and better play in the VAFA, but great to see he is playing.

Not sure we have any with a better overall resume though. While he is shadow of what he was in the mid 00s, in his pomp I don’t think many who have played to that level have stepped out in the VAFA and I cant remember too many # 2 draft picks.

In response to other points made - De La not playing that badly, just can’t seem to find a way to win. Might be the first team to get related having not lost a game by more than 6 or 7 goals. To be honest a spell in B grade would not be such a bad thing. Comment about practice game was very much tongue in cheek Brian. Obviously you can’t draw too many conclusions from pre season games.

De La just have to find a way to win, get the confidence up and then they are on their way.

From what I'm being told there's only one standout team in St Bernard's with all teams able to beat each other on any given day.

Having said that, a few years in B would be great, I'm not of the belief that if you get relegated that going back up straight away is the best thing to happen, it takes a while to re-establish confidence and create a winning culture. Collegians are a classic example of being relegated to C grade and rebuilding to become a power in the last 10 years.

Agree on all fronts. Being an A to B yo yo achieves little in the long term. In regard to St Bernards – have easily the best list, very few weaknesses and pretty good depth but Trinity play with a sort of dare and belief that could take them a fair way in September. Throw a blanket over the other 8 teams with a number of clubs capable of winning it should they play finals.

Robert Harvey or Dennis Cordner are by far the best quality of footballer every the play both VAFA and AFL/VFL.

Max "two cents worth" Leader

Agree on Robert Harvey and can’t believe I forgot about him. One of my all-time favourite players. Was in his late 30s when he played just a handful of games for OH and they were in a different grade to De La that season but I understand he was still a real handful. Mithen and Cordner were before my time but obviously great players.

Thers is a Stuart Leowe that hasnt been mentioned for OH a few years back. What a piece of work he was!!!
Had a habbit of hitting little blokes from behind.....using the excuse that it was a crude tackle....

VAFA selectors have named a strong Senior Big V squad that will take on AFL Victoria Country in Bendigo on 12 July.

Of the William Buck Premier teams, St Bernards and University Blues have the most representatives with six players named in the seniors, including potential senior Big V debutants Piers Flanagan and Marshall Rippon (Blues) and Alex McLeod, Simon Caven and Tristan Cartledge (St Bernards). University Blacks and St Bernard’s both have five representatives. The squad features only four Premier B players this season due to selectors wanting to name a strong Premier B-Division 4 squad for the match against the Country Number 2 team.

Thirteen players that played for the senior side in the win against Northern Football League earlier this year have bee named. Co-Coaches Cam Roberts and Matthew Kempton will again lead the side as they look to secure a third straight win against the Country.

Due to the timing of matches with the AAFC Carnival falling a week before, selectors are keen to ensure a careful management of players over the two week representative period. Players selected in the U23 Squad who are also selected to play against AFL Victoria Country will have their options discussed at Under 23 training on Wednesday the 17th of June. Representative coaching staff will be at the training to discuss managing workloads.

The senior squad will train at Harry Trott Oval (Collegians home ground) with the first session to be, Friday 26 June. There will be sessions on Wednesday 1 July, then Tuesday 7 July and Thursday 9 July.

Coaches: Cam Roberts & Matthew Kempton
