Premier A - 2015

Ok...am interested in thoughts for the Prem teams at the half way mark....here are some thoughts to prompt discussion.....

OT and Bernards - prob look like playing finals. Regardless of the result this week? Should win at least 12 games each..
probably more.....if they win 13 games, they finish top 2....based on.....

Old Carey probably need to win 5 of their last 9 to win enough games to play finals. Can they?? Would equate to 42 premiership points

This would mean Xavs and Collegians need to win 6 games of the last 9 to surpass Carey and get to 11 wins each.....

Alot of us think Blues will play finals but to do so, they may need to win 6 or 7 of their remaining 9 games.....may be a big ask

But i think our 4 finalists come from the above 6 teams...

Blacks are gone as far as finals are concerned IMO. 21 goals to 4 in 3 quarters against Bernards is my rationale for thinking this. Could they still drop?? Probably not IMO.

Scotch, De La and Beaumaris are battling relegation it seems.

Thoughts??

Interesting that 1 week ago Blacks beat Carey by 100 points. Strange comp.

I think the four may stay the same.
Trinty and Bernies have banked some nice wins.

Carey play bottom 3 at home in the second half, so only need to win another couple.

Xavs to finish 4th.

5-7 Uni's and Wesley.

Scotch to just stay up.

Ormond recently had a 30 year anniversary dinner at the MCG to reflect on their 5 premierships won in 7 years in A Section/Premier (1985, 1987-90), under coach Mike McCarther-Allen.
Out of the 5 flags they won, which one do you think was the best?

Jas, appreciate the enthusiasm, but this is Premier A 2015 thread. I think you need a new thread on the VAFA board celebrating the years gone by. VAFA History, or something like that.

Depends a bit on who keeps close to their best side on the park. We saw the issue of Blues missing a heap. I understand a couple are back but the rest will be gone for the season. Similarly Old Carey was digging well into their reserves side against Blacks, and a couple back obviously helped them. I think if either of these sides lose players, they will drift badly, but not enough to be relegated. Xavs are struggling with key defenders so will be tested by sides with height up front-Bernies in particular leap to mind here.
On the basis of everyone maintaining close to their best side
OT
ST B
UBlu
OC
with STB to salute- though may be a bit top heavy on the expanses of EP

No St Bernards in there Jas? If not the best side in it they are at least the 2nd best and if nothing else have the most talented list. Just beat last years premiers by 100 plus at the Uni.

Top 2 – St Bernards, Trinity - daylight to 3 and 4 which is a raffle between Carey, Blacks, Blues and Colls. Saw Xavs on the weekend. While they are a great club they would need to improve substantially as they were very lucky to beat (a depleted) bottom team having lost to them earlier in the year.

Pretty much agree with you R, Bernies will be in there, but as i said some weeks back, WILL NOT win the flag. If they make the GF, played at VAFA HQ their lack of pace will be exploited. Trinity seem to be hanging on OK. Your summation of the others seems on the money.
If OS get beat this sat, drop them from the 4 - 7 possies......

I reckon Bernies can win it. It comes down to a couple of simple things. One is Bentick. Despite possible lack of leg speed across the team he is a clearance king. Secondly, the presence of their( ex-AFL) monsters up forward. They have three players( it was four but I think one snapped his Achilles?) who are big, strong and can take a pack grab. So basically if Bentick( or for that matter Sullivan) gets enough clearances, St Bernards will kick goals. This is no disrespect to the rest of Bernies onball division.
If a side can nullify Bentick, hold the talls and run off half back then Bernies are susceptible.

Agree. Bernies for me. Hedge burners have used very few players this year so haven't had to rely on depth. This will change at some point. Plus no Iezzi.
Carey have lost McQ-Mis and Crozier is always injured. Will struggle with depth and talls.
Ditto Xavs re tall backs.
Collegians and Blacks are a shadow of former selves.
Blues have the talent and timber but seem to have too many outs.

Snowdogs for me!

FWIW don't forget the call of Melbourne Airport. The 2 week bye will surely entice a few to have an extended holiday. The ones that go never come back better.....

FWIW: Colls have beaten Bernies in their last three meetings......last as recent as a few weeks ago..

That is a huge call....Bernards are 3 games and 20% clear of Blues and 2 games and 35% clear of Xavs.....I understand you think Bernards have overachieved in the 1st 9 rounds....but i just can't see Blues and Xavs making up that ground.....particularly when 6 of Bernards last 9 games are home games....

Im with you Baggers re : Bernies in 4 and their home games to come. Their downfall is that the Finals arent palyed at their horrendous ground.

Horrendous is wrong now....oval has been completely rebuilt....in amazing nick....but it can still be a wind tunnel....and as long as opposing teams hate visiting, it will be a very tough place for opposition teams to take the 4 points....

Understand that, after the home and away games come the Finals and they arent played there.........That will be their problem.

THE EYE NOTES THAT THE VAFA WEBSITE HAS AGAIN FAILED TO UPDATE THE TRIBUNAL PAGE THIS MORNING.
SOME IMPORTANT CASES UP LAST NIGHT.
THE VAFA WERE IN MY TIME INCREDIBLY QUICK TO FINE CLUBS WHO MISSED DEADLINES.
MUST BE A LONG, LONG MORNING BREAK AT H/Q.

GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!

Not sure I agree as the new oval is bigger than VAFA HQ. The players will be used to playing on a large oval....why Bernards would then be disadvantaged versus other finalists is probably more in our minds than any real disadvantage IMO...

Round 10....tips

Bernards to defeat OT in a gripping tussle
Collegians to prevail over Scotch
Old Carey to defeat Blues
Blacks to defeat Xavs
De La to maintain a glimmer of hope of staying up by beating Beauie
