Um, no... as would have thought these 1st rounders we chose with a view to being inside midfielders.

Pedlar
McHenry
Jones
Jones yeah I guess. He's just shit.

Pedlar and McHenry are very much forwards though.

All 3 were drafted with a view to being midfielders though.

We intend to use Pedlar still as a midfielder/forward.

Pedlar and Jones are mids verbatim

Mchenry I agree with you... It was a bizarre selection
The bit that's strange, is that we risked the deal with Carlton so that we could get him.

I'm not that upset with his output v his pick (there were better after him, but worse before etc, but basically par), but it was a strange player to make a stand on.

Schoenberg, Worrell, Cook, Berry, Rowe, Soligo, Taylor (all much later picks) sure. But McHenry? Not the hill I'd die on.

When you're trading, it's just the value of the pick you're chasing, not a particular player. Although at that pick you'd have a few in mind that you think will still be available. But it's opportunity that your trading for.

We used pick 16 on McHenry and then traded 19 to Carlton for a swap of future firsts.

If Stocker had gone at pick 17 or 18, the Carlton deal would have been off the table. We took that risk because we wanted to make sure we got McHenry.

Sorry, I was thinking of the deal that got us 16 in the first place.

In 2018s picks 14-23 only Jordan Clark is playing very regular AFL and that has taken a change of clubs to get going

Clearly was a difficult part of the draft talent pool to read...
And it's only since Clark moved back home from Geelong that he's become a regular player for Freo.

Duursma has certainly disappointed big time after looking good in his first season.

Pretty ordinary draft outside of the top end talent wise.

He had two good games in the SANFL, hardly tearing it up. He also didn't have a good SANFL campaign in 2021 either.

Hately had four games > 50% CBA. Of those, the worst game he played was the one he had the highest CBA (v Carlton). Nor was he pushed out for Crouch, seeing the first game Crouch came back didn't impact Hately CBAs. Berry was the one impacted and that was quickly corrected against the Eagles with Hately being pushed on a wing. What I did undersell was that being pushed to a wing was the death knell or we didn't really care about him (I thought we only gave him 4-5 games, not 11) as he did play a handful of good games there before being dropped due to Soligo forcing his way into our midfield rotations.

Being a bottom ager loses all relevance after a lads 2nd season, because the argument is the kid has less natural development pre-draft and is more prone to rapidly rise once they enter an AFL system. Right now, Hately is 4 years in, physically developed (though should probably go from 92 kg to ~98 kg to give him a better chance to succed), and couldn't hold a spot in a really poor side who is crying out for big bodied mid. Unfortunately, his biggest problem is he doesn't have that game in him at this point in time.

I think you could all but write Hately off at this point, unless he puts a lot of work on reinventing his midfield game into being that contested beast.
Yeah but we have a stacked midfield

Apart from Zak Butters, Callum Wilkie in the rookie draft was the big miss in 2018. Not only would we have got a better player but we wouldn’t have wasted a pick on Fischer McAsey in 2019

Butters was before 14 bud.
And wilkie was a rookie - a good get sure
