Mostly the only ones that don't appreciate what he brings are some of his team's supporters.

Keays is only 25.
Has already accomplished a shitload more than Milera, who is the same age, and was a higher draft pick, and is still one people talk about his potential.
He still has room for improvement also - Laird was still playing HBF at the same age.
see heres my issue... what can be polarising about this? he is not the only top player in the AFL with poor DE%
I've been wanting to ask this for years.
Is it knowing where to run to receive the ball in the most efficient way (i.e. not running around in circles wasting energy)? Could this even be called a pattern? Or is it just reading the play well?

I'm not 100% .....I do know FWD's running patterns .....with MIDS, I assume it's the movement around the ball (defensive side or offensive side of the contest) ....then running to a defensive position when the oppo have the ball, and offensive position, when we have it
It's all about positioning around the ground, to where the ball is likely to go .....it used to be called "reading the play" ....some players do it naturally, they can see where the ball is going 3-4 possessions beforehand

Particularly for forwards, yes.

"running patterns" is bullshit lingo to excuse poor performance and continued selection. Nobody gives a shit about a pattern if you're getting the ball and using it well. Sog is a goober, but I still love him.

It's a big step to get a bloke who thinks he's the best forward in the team to lead where he won't get the ball, just for another forward to get a shot on goal.
Coached a team with 3 key forwards one year. They were forever in each other's space until we trained in some simple running patterns.

Forwards I get it, but not for mids. Tredders did the Sheahan interview thing and was awesome. He ranked club B&F as the most important award because 'only your coaches know your job'. He went on to say that he played a game where he barely touched the ball but his job was to take his opponent out to the boundary line and out of the play. He got big votes in the b&f but we all would have though he had a crap game.
Running patterns outside of players ahead of the ball is rubbish. And it's not a term used for forwards anyway.
The opposite of McHenry and Murphy, Riley Knight, Patrenko basically.
Guys who seem to run alot but aimlessly and with no real impact. Basically following the ball blindly.
