Curious how many clubs do you think he would get a game at?
He's the 365th ranked player in the league and the 64th ranked general (ie not key) forward. Over 18 teams, that's about 20th best in the team and 3rd or 4th best general forward .

So he'd get a game at most clubs, but their fans would be as meh about him as we are.

He's about what you'd expect from that area of that draft. It's just that expectations aren't high.

When you hear Ogilvie talk about Ned it’s almost as if it was a pick on personality

Luckily that’s not the benchmark for all picks

Players rankings are based on stats, I don’t think he would get a game at most clubs at all.

And not he’s not what you’d expect from a top 20 pick.

Obviously not too many of those shitcanning his selection watched any of his Geelong Falcons games and likely not much of his Vic Country games at the Nationals. I saw what he can bring live and up close 4 or 5 times at Mars Stadium, one of his games against the Calder Cannons was exceptional playing midfield on a day where Sam Walsh was well and truly closed down. Maybe if we actually gave him some decent midfield minutes we might get to see what he's got but for some reason only known to the coaches that just hasn't happened.

Is that a criticism of Nicks ;)

2018 has proven to be a very shallow midfield draft other than Walsh, Smith, Rozee and Butters.

It's no wonder Jones also looked good that year.

I think you can safely add Rowbottom to that quartet.

Actually the entire draft was terrible outside the best 10 or so players. Huge misread by draft watchers calling it a super draft

Around 30 players at each club get games each year. The bottom end of those players are pretty uninspiring, including at the good clubs. Ned would get games at most clubs ahead of those bottom end players.

We don't notice the worst players from other teams because we only see them once a year (and then don't see them anyway). We get to see Ned and his (above average) 12.4 disposals, (above average) 3.3 tackles and (average) 0.7 goals every week

Maybe some years late top 20 picks are better than this, but not pick 16 to 20 in 2018.

He's decent and better than what we drafted but I don't think he's AA quality.

You've also got Thomas - NFI what's happened to him. Not sure he wants to play AFL.
Caldwell - slightly underwhelming and injury prone
Hately - fringe player
Stocker - delisted
RCD - delisted
E.Smith - delisted
Sparrow - slight upgrade on McHenry
Valente - delisted
Vandermeer - fringe player

Never said he didn’t deserve to be drafted then, but on exposed form he’d be a very late pick or a rookie if at all
On exposed form he'd be a mid to late draft pick, there are a lot of worse players than him currently in the system

If you traded him you'd probably get a pick in between 35 and 50

Even more reason we should have beaten Port to Rozee given we had better collateral.

That draft was a miserable fail for Hamish and Reid.

A 26yo Frampton got us what will be a pick in the late 40's or early 50's

If he continues to perform at his current level in the future his value will only go further down, though
Billy Frampton, a tall with elite disposal who suits Collingwood perfectly compared to a small with no real speed, goal sense, football brain and decent disposal. He’s runs, he’s a trier and he tackles, that’s it.

What did we get for Riley Knight?

Wouldn’t mind seeing that at all

He’s a panick player, don’t need them through the mid field, can only judge him on what he brings to AFL level

Frampton's also a defender who couldn't defend a tree

If we looked to trade Knight after his 19-game fourth season I'd say he'd have been of similar value. The problem is he didn't improve from that point, and ended up a 25-year-old nothing burger. Given the position we were in after 2020, there was no point keeping him on the list

Ned might well go the same way as Knight over the course of the next few years, but at least still has time on his side. The way things seem to be going, we'll need someone like Pedlar to overtake him, though

Ha ha ha.

You saw what he could bring as a 17 year old against other 17 year olds when his best asset was his elite fitness.

What in the world does that have to do with the way he fits in at AFL level 4 years later?

Maybe if we actually gave him some decent midfield minutes we might get to see what he's got but for some reason only known to the coaches that just hasn't happened.

I am glad we aren't wasting midfield minutes on a 179cm player whose three best attributes are work ethic, fitness and tackling.

The thing that worried me at that draft time was the Jones and McHenry highlight reels, which consisted almost entirely of tackle after tackle after tackle. And their tackling was particularly touted.

I'm not a great fan of highlight reels for drafting, in that anyone being seriously considered should be able to produce a tempting selective reel.
However, if they can't, then that should be some sort of red flag.

I think a contender would love to give up a 3rd rounder for a player like McHenry. 50+ game player with elite fitness, great tackling and from all reports a great teammate.

Perfect depth player, that could come in and play a role.
