It’s good to see Barnett has put on size but thats not his issue. When drafted he was more physically developed than a lot 18 years old ruckmen and last season would have been around the mid 90kgs which is a frame that is big enough to be competitive.
By his own admission he's only competitive for the first bounce

For those that go down to training, do you see the players change their shoes/boots?

From the photos, it looks like the players are doing their running in mid-high stack high cushioned half/marathon type distance shoes.

I think Brockman’s may have carbon plates in them…

They are great running shoes, very fast but definitely not meant for lateral movements side to side so I would assume they would throw their boots on for the drills.

I wonder if the shoes have anything to do with the hard surface… those runners are built for pounding the pavement

Interesting point, I noticed Hewett had different shoes in photos..

Last time we saw Elijah Hewett play he was this fresh faced, always smiling youngster with boofy hair, now he looks like an all business vet with a crisp hair cut..did bro mature like six years in the space of 12 months or something?

Can’t say I notice them changing shoes very often, but you’ll often see the rehab guys only wearing running shoes, which gives you a good indication they’re not doing much ball work in that session. Whereas the rest of the group does the whole session in footy boots as far as I know.

I think for the proper fitness trials they use runners though and then change into boots after.

A lot of them swapped out the runners for boots after the beep test the other day.

Anyone tell me if HJ is back in main training? If so is he in the Midfield or backline group?

In the short video the club put out, it looked like Johnston still had that elbow brace on so probably not back with the main group yet

I'm hoping that Barnett's improved physique translates into additional self confidence which will help him. His problem, to me, seems to be a lack of self belief and being quite easy to mentally rattle. Hopefully the bigger rig gives him more self belief.

Hewett & Hall are looking like they are about to take their games to the next level. Hewett is wearing Altra runners, they are a flat foot shoe, great for long distances.
They certainly look buff. While we're expecting Hewett to go next level and be an added bonus this season, imagine if Hall also improves and provides some solid reliable grunt around the packs. What were his shortcomings, kicking, speed?

I agree they look in good shape. Hewett is actually wearing Brooks Hyperion I believe…

I’m glad he’s not wearing Altras, which are zero drop and require a whole different technique of running and are not meant for everyone. Their long distance shoes are not really designed to be necessarily fast either.

Excited to watch the Roos v WC race up the ladder

From rookieme last year.

0 concerns about his power from stoppage, we have an abundance of that already, should be a standard clean hands inside mid who can shovel it out to Reid and Hewett

He's also a very good link up player and a great mark for his size. His weakness is the consistency of his kicking, particularly his short passes.

Good to know (strengths), so composure/reading play in the heat of the moment, and as you say dishing out. Looks to have gained more leg muscle/power. With the new game style being quicker ball movement (running/handballing etc), you'd think over the course of the training period, players composure and quick decision-making would improve also?
