I was watching Fox Sports News and they were interviewing Paul Roos and in this interview Roos strongly hinted that either Mike Pyke or Brendan Murphy will be elevated for the injured Leo Barry.

It will be interesting to see which one Paul Roos will choose.

Surely, SURELY it will be Murphy. I mean, in a direct comparison, reports suggest he's well ahead of Pyke.

Would probably agree Murphy would be elevated earlier but had a look at training week before last & Pykes progress really surprized - I reckon he's a real chance to play this year - big body, athletic & his kicking & marking on the lead to Maxfield & Allisons foot passes were very impressive for someone totally new to the game.

Dont be too surprized guys, this bloke may be a real bonus - Key position or ruckmen of his size & pace dont grow on trees.

Stewie was telling him where to run during match practice too,so hopefully he learns the reading of play quickly.

I'm as big an optimist about Pyke going around but you would think the club would want him to have games in the magoos first given he's never played one AFL game in his life. And there really is little point promoting a rookie unless you're going to play them

True to a point. We know that Rookie Listed players can play in the NAB Cup and in the NAB Challenge Matches, so the Club will want to play Pyke in as many games as possible is see how far along he is against stronger opposition. If he excells then the club will more than like look at promoting him. If he doesn't then he'll given more time to prove himself. This pre season however isn't going to be the be all to end all for Pyke.

In the case of Murphy there would be like point you would think or more to the point little difference in promoting him and then not playing him. However with Pyke you could promote him and not play him because he is a Ruckman and he would be there for depth and still be available for the reserves.

If we epically fail early on and we can't make finals I say let him play in the firsts. The more big time exposure early on the better he'll be for it.

I can understand that view with Murphy because he is a Key Position Defender and the hype with him is such that if in such a position after 15 matches, I would throw him in at CHB for the last 7 matches and see how he goes. But with Pyke he is viewed to be a Ruckman and with Currie coming into the Senior side this season, I can't see how we or why we would carry 3 ruckman in the side (predicting that Jolly hasn't gone down with an injury that is). Currie needs as much gametime as it is and Jolly will play regardless if fit. Where does that leave Pyke?

He would get more game time playing at one level and should only play senior football if we are doomed for the season and one of Jolly or Currie is injured and can't play. No point to bring him up and have him be a bit player.

Others who should get game time should be White at Full Back and Grundy at Full Forward and we can do that right though the Preseason matches and even Round One.

Rob, my point is why promote anyone if you're not going to play them and lock up that spot? Leave the spot open and promote whoever is deserving and has the opportunity to contribute to the site.

hes a good little (well i should say tall) defender thats where he needs to be i dont think he would do very well in the forward line if thats where they stuck him i mean i dont think hes had any sort of practice kicking and marking in the forward line...and i think at the moment they are only going to keep him in one place at a time
