they are saying he will spend the year in 2's and wont play seniors this year. that's a ridiculous position.

I dont think its too ridiculous. Freeman has had chronic hamstring injuries for the last 2 years. He was never going to be pushed up to the AFL quickly.

Ignoring this current injury, a safe plan from St Kilda at the start of the year would've been to give him 2-3 months of regular VFL footy (and they even started him in VFL reserves) and then slowly ease him up to AFL. They did not get him for 2016 results but with a hope for long term.
I dont think its that surprising a comment from Richardson. Also given St Kildas form, spots are gonna be much harder to come by than first thought (a good thing for them).
However if he keeps needing extra time to recover than the long term hope dwindles more and more.

Thing is - I still don't think St Kilda were in the wrong to take the punt on him. I'm glad we didn't, but for where there list is at it's not a massive cost for them. For their sake you hope they did have an injury clause in there.

And for Freeman - lets hope he is able to turn this around at some point, but he had clearly made the right call by chasing the garaunteed money. (something i said when he first signed with them)

Interesting thread, except for one post.:D

Bad luck to the kid.

Hi Adam H, using your real account for once.

What surprises me is that there is an expectation that Freeman is a gun purely because he was pick 10 in the draft. The mystique has probably been due to the fact that he hasn't played football and really hasn't played much VFL footy over the past 2.5 years.

So even without his injury issues, he is totally unproven. He is going to be more of a mature age recruit if he was to overcome his injuries. But he will be a mature age recruit who has played virtually no footy for 3 years.

Personally, I think there is far too much hype. And realistically, I don't think there are many examples of someone who has not played for afl for 3 years due to a chronic injury actually recovering and having a reasonable career.

Having said this, I would have taken the punt on him just as St Kilda has. They aren't paying the full 100% of their cap, and are not contenders, so worth a punt. Sometimes they work out sometimes they don't. I'd be shocked if they didn't think he would have played footy this year. I'm sure they have come to the realisation that the damage is far more severe than first thought and probabilities of him getting up are now very low.

I think its ridiculous cause he might string 3 - 4 good 2's games together so play him. At least he will have played a game. waiting to next year gives him more time to break down.

Richardson said he isnt PLANNING to play him in the seniors in 2016. Doesnt says he wont if circumstances change

Buckley probably isnt PLANNING to play Tim Golds in the seniors either. Or Dane Swan for that matter for different reasons. But if circumstances change......

But would his body be ready? And are you just increasing the risk of reinjuring the hamstring by having that jump in intensity before he's really ready.

These sort of injuries can have a gradual recovery, particularly if they have been recurrent, and the key to rehab is to gradually increase the amount of work you are doing, whilst also making sure you don't do too much, too quickly. The decision that would have to be made is: What's the added benefit from a football perspective of moving him up to AFL (both for his individual development, and for the team) and whats the increased risk of re-injury... and whenever you think the benifits outweigh the risk (and there is a spot available) - then make that call. Personally, I would wait longer that 3-4 weeks to do that, but that's a decision for St Kilda medical/physio department to make, and it sounds like they already have.

TT, if Golds plays senior footy we should fold. He is softer than Craig Bradley.

we are talking in 10 - 12 weeks time. he only had 'awareness' not a strain. he's jogging laps this week and should be playing in the short term. I just think its ludicrous to leave someone in the 2s. they can get hurt in any game.

So let's play a new game, it's called who should have we drafted instead of Freeman & Scharenberg? God what a poor draft for us

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We now have Scharenberg and Aish so it might still turn out okay (plus we got Langdon, Marsh and Oxley). Also when you look at that draft it was fairly weak so far (although I like Cripps and Crouch). The biggest regret from 2013 is not getting Bontempelli.

If something unplanned happens with Freeman, it's more likely to be that the decision is taken entirely out of Richardson's hands than it is that Freeman is unexpectedly forced into the line-up.

As Kerry Packer said after his heart attack and near death experience

"I’ve been to the other side, and let me tell you, son, there’s f*cKK%%%king nothing there. "
That's was gold
There's nothing there

If he's Craig Bradley level, soft or not, yes please!

Boo, he's not Craig Bradley
