Fly's comments in his presser & what Jonathan Brown said about them were interesting:

“I said that for the lifetime that I’m sitting in this chair - maybe barring a grand final - if we don’t win, don’t lay on the ground,” McRae told reporters.

Brown, who played alongside McRae under Matthews at the Lions, weighed in on the comments.

“It reminded me of Leigh Matthews 21 years ago,” Brown recalled during Fox Footy’s Best On Ground.

“We got smashed by Essendon and Vossy (Michael Voss) was laughing with James Hird after the game and they were shaking hands. He showed it in the review and said ‘don’t ever let me see you boys laugh after a loss like that again.’ That message resonated with the playing group and it stayed with us for years to come.

“Not that it was about being bad losers, but it was just about get up, get on with business and move on to the next thing and don’t be a loser.

“I felt that was coming from the Leigh Matthews book from Craig McRae. Also, just giving the boys confidence saying ‘we might’ve lost the battle today but we’ve got more battles to come and that starts next week.’”

It suggests that there is steel under Fly's warm & cuddly exterior.
It's about developing a killer instinct.

Can't wait to hear David King's deep analysis explaining why our performance wasn't as impressive as some believe because our left footed centre clearances were at a level too high to sustain and our contested game was 2 % less than the AFL average.

Bluster and waffle pays.

He arrogantly dismissed us saying the Cats by forty plus before moving onto more interesting clashes

King should be a weather man in the nightly news. No matter how wayward your predictions may be you will continue to be the weatherman .

Sorry (loki04) got it wrong.

You are right Sydney finished higher than us on the ladder.
It’s irrelevant anyway. Qualifying final winners always get the home prelims

I think if you can double fist it you can mark it. So was the poor option he chose but over all he was one of our best so can't be too critical of him.

I agree, poor option. But a reset is generally going to be seen as the safe option.

You're putting words into my mouth. I didn't say I was surprised. I said I was "pissed off" My perception is that Umps haven't fully clued in to forwards playing it to the boundary line to gain a forward stoppage and field position when there's nothing else on, so they're less inclined to pay them in forward 50. So whilst I was annoyed that they didn't pay that one against Cameron, I wasn't surprised. Exiting defence that would have been a free against Cameron every single time, so the umpire interpretation changing depending on ground position irks me.

Thanks for acknowledging it’s semantics and that your happy to back your perceptions while they’re favorable but run a mile from them when they’re not. It’s nice that we can leave this on a positive development note for you.

If it bleeds we can kill it.

The Cox TOG is odd. He looked OK when on - stuck a few marks and had some good follow ups. Maybe it was something to do with the matchups, and Cameron doing his bit? But Geelong are a tall team, so? If it was to do with a different 'finals' strategy from the coaches, I'm not sure it worked.

I was surprised I didn’t see Cox in any F50 marking contests (maybe he was - I haven’t watched the replay). He’s normally good for a clunk or two and a couple of shots at goal a game against us, and at the very least would have forced SDK to go to him and given Stewart something to think about. I can only assume Cox wasn’t 100% fit given his low game time?

We lost the game in the second quarter where we let Geelong score 4 goals in a row. WHE set shot at the end mitigated that a bit but you can’t play such a poor quarter of footy against one of the best teams in the comp and expect a win.

We continually tried to take options in the corridor that weren’t there and kept opening up our defence by turning it over.
That was the quarter the umps murdered us most. It turned the momentum and they scored goals from non-calls.

In his defence, I believe on paper Geelong should have beaten us by 4-6 goals. If I were a cats fan I’d be livid after last night. It’s the same underperformance we had under Buckley. They clearly have better list on paper, arguable the two best key fwds in the game and they got outplayed and out-coached by a first year coach of a team that finished 17th in 2021.

The cats may well win the premiership. But they have to be the most bland, boring and uninspiring top 4 team I’ve watched in recent history. Ultimately, I shouldn’t be surprised as teams usually are a reflection of the coach, and Chris Scott has to one of the least charismatic people I’ve ever laid eyes on.

JB1975, I am going to forensically watch replay and report back to you with timestamps on questionable umpiring decisions for both sides.
It might be in a few weeks time though as not sure I can watch again so soon.;)

Whether they had any real influence on the final score, I am not sure but there were a couple of shockers that were momentum swingers.

No worries, Maggie. I'd be happy to take a look if you put something together.

I'm not sure that my mind will change on my overall sense of things, but you never know!

Sidey was fantastic all day. He lost his footing trying to chase when all hope was gone anyway because they had another player alone in the square. His slip had no bearing on that final play.
Yes I know, I was sort of joking, and Sidebottom was great

I generally go to great lengths to not bash the umpires, but yesterday was horrible. I thought the umps had forgotten about the Holding the ball rule, until one of boys took possession and was immediately tackled and it was called. Probably a few push in the backs that went unnoticed.

Very proud of the boys, even if we lose next week, we've gone from 17th to a Semi-final. Some teams take years to do that. We plug a few gaps and we could potentially be a powerhouse over the next few years. Covid really hampered the younger brigade's development.

So last week I went on a “nerd” deep dive and identified Cats record ain’t great when the opposition contain their fwd 50 efficiency to around 45% and make 12 or tackles inside fwd 50.

Based on the above, and looking the the seasons statistics, I came up with 4 keys to victory vs geelong. Despite umpiring ineptitude, I thought I’d go back and review how we did in the 4 areas I thought we needed to win to beat the cats.

1. Break even at stoppage and contested ball.

2. Intercept and disrupt Cats fwd 50 efficiency

3. Tackle like manics inside fwd 50

4. Make the most of our scoring opportunities.

In summary the game played out like I imagined it.

1. We broke even at stoppage and did well enough in contested ball only losing by 21 which is manageable.

2. We did intercept and disrupt cats inside 50 a lot of the time, however, not enough to get it down to 45%.

Cats had 49% inside 50 efficiency but only 9 marks inside 50 which is well down on their season average of 15.2 before last night.

From memory, cats got two or three scoring shots from just hopeful bombs from centre long inside 50 and taking marks that usually get spoiled. Had two of those been spoiled and repelled, that’s fwd 50 efficiency of 45%. If 3 were repelled it’s 43%. So we weren’t far off it.

Now obviously live watching the game those marks stood out as potential game winners. But the stats really show just how closer we were to containing the cats to 45% and under fwd 50 efficiency.

3. We had 10 inside fwd 50 tackles. 7 of which were in the first half. A bit disappointing we only had 3 in the second half. With 56 inside 50s and our own fwd 50 efficiency at 43% i think we really needed to have hit 12 or more tackles inside 50. At half time I was thinking we were on track to hit the magical 12 or more KPI. So yeah this is one key stat I thought we needed to achieve that we didn’t unfortunately.

4. Didn’t make the most of 56 inside 50s unfortunately. 43% fwd efficacy ain’t good enough. Don’t need to say much more than that really.

So in conclusion, the game-plan held up obviously held up. This will sound harsh but we just didn’t execute all 4 key areas over the 4 quarters. And as it turns out, we probably only needed to win 2 out of 4 and we’d have beaten the cats.

Considering we only really achieve the one KPI - it’s actually a pretty ordinary result for Geelong. Hopefully we see them again this year cause I think we’ll beat them just by winning 2 of 4 keys to victory.

We lost because we missed easy shots.

Proud of the team but shattered to lose. Feels like the dream is over.
Feeling the same mate, but then I remind myself that we lost the Qualifying Final to West Coast in 2018 before bouncing back the following week against GWS. Then we came out and smashed the heavily fancied Tigers in the Preliminary Final. Not saying it’ll happen similarly this year but we’ve done it before. Fingers crossed the playing group have it in them jmac70 .

Unfortunately I have to agree, and I’m a glass half full kinda person.

We’ve been amazing this season - but if half those close wins go against us we probably don’t event make the 8 - which makes last night’s performance even more meritorious.

Our list has glaring deficiencies but we have developed a game plan to paper over those - well coached. Our mid field lack the talent and depth of say the swans, and we lack talent up forward - if Cameron plays for Collingwood we win easy last night.

This list will not get us much further - given Pendles, Sidey, and Howe entering their last season next year.

Desperately need more A grade talent on the list

Of Pendles, Sidey and Howe, the only big loss will be Pendles and he still has a couple more years to go based off his output this year.

Howe and Sidey have significantly slowed (which is why you expect them to retire after 1 more season) and there's not that much of a gap between them and promoting a young kid that steps up (e.g. Murphy, Bianco)

Lucky we have Naicos ready to assume Pendles mantle of playmaker

Exhibit A. This is holding the ball in any game. Took possession, three steps (prior), tackled, dropped it.

Exhibit B

That decision cost us dearly,as did the non free kick to Ginnivan for a push in the back,As did the goal they received for deliberate out of bounds against Pendlebury, which came from a ball that clearly went out of bounds near the goal posts, which was called play on by the boundary umpire. All up those three decisions cost us three goals.Considering we lost be a goal,it’s pretty safe to say the umpires did cost us the game.

They probably do it too
If you mean monitor them, then surely the AFL would. Well, to same extent they monitor players which in Stephenson's case didn't appear to be that well. If you are suggesting the umpires are betting on and rigging games, that would seriously shock me but with the amount of money involved I guess anything is possible. At the end of the day it is not an easy role and umpires are caught between a rock and a hard place.

The rock is the AFL and umpires director. I'd love to see a review and the leaders of both be sacked with prejudice. I believe they have shown a lack of vision and are constantly reactive, blown by the media's hot air.

The hard place is the players, many who act as if cheating is ok if you get away with it. Its a fine line but I think there is a difference between exploiting rules and cheating. Duckwood exploits. Ripping Ginni's head off because the umps have called open season or throwing the ball is cheating. This is where the media could be a proactive force: instead of highlighting a throw as an umpires poor call why not highlight it as a scumbag players cheat.

Entered the weekend as the 4th or 5th seed, ended it as the 3rd.

Should enter this week with plenty of confidence, our footy is built for finals.

Also fk me Jeremy Cameron is a gun.
