Pretty much what happened with Guth earlier in the season. Carlton he was quite the comeback kid then was awful V Port.

He does have his long locks coming back though. Surely a sign he'll never do a buzz cut again. It was some real cursed Samson shit going on since he did that.

I was just coming to post these

Pretty strong talk around the traps that Geelong are expected to go with SDK in the ruck / Blicavs as back up, and leave Stanley out.

Mullin a big chance to play and run with JHF after the job he did in the previous match against Port. Bews to Rioli

Tuohy or Duncan in doubt?

I don't think Neale being ineffective in a final is probable, it is virtually guaranteed. If we play Brisbane or GWS Andrews or Taylor will absolutely own him. I cannot see him being competitive.
Your dislike for Neale is getting irrational.

He's objectively been better than Hawkins has this year, let alone Hawkins hobbling on one leg after not running for the best part of three months.

As for the 'defenders playing off him' thing - You do realise that's exactly what teams were doing with Hawkins this year?

A family member of mine is very close with Adam Kingsley's son up here in Sydney, and when we played the Giants earlier in the year, it was during the peak of Tomahawk's poor form.

Naturally, being a Cats supporter, he asked Kingers what his plans were for Tom, and he blatantly said they were going to give him no respect and play off him.

He knew Hawk wouldn't (or couldn't) chase, contest marks, or crash packs, and they knew he wasn't going to hurt them on the other end - and even if he could - Hawkins 'hurting you' in the year 2024 is two goals at best.

Say what you want about Neale, but he's going to chase, he's going to tackle, and he's going to throw himself at packs.

If he can hit the scoreboard like he's been doing, then that's even better, and it's more than Tom can offer at this stage of his career.

Tom's been a legend of this club, but take the sentimentality out of it, and there's no objective reason for him to be playing in this finals series.

If it doesn't work and we get done, then we get done. At least we can say we've given the future of this club some finals experience, and made the right choice on all exposed data at the time.

We're talking about Hawkins here, yeah?

Hawkins went goalless against Brisbane earlier this season, though he did record his season high 2 goal assists

When we faced GWS, Taylor kept Hawkins to 2 goals with no goal assists

Weitering kept Hawkins goalless across 6 quarters of football this season, and Tom also finished without a goal or goal assist against the Bulldogs

Though Hawkins did have slight bit more success against both Port & Sydney with a solitary goal against each

Hawthorn is the only finals team whom Hawkins has managed to kick more than 2 goals against this season & that was his 350th when he kicked 4 goals

Neale may struggle on Thursday night and not kick a bag of 5 goals, but let's not pretend that Hawkins was in some sort of brilliant form pre injury and kicking bags of goals himself - based on what we've seen this year, I'd be more worried about Tom not being competitive rather than Shannon being uncompetitive

Lots of talk about Stewart on the footy shows this week and as noted by previous posts undertones of criticism.

I watched the video shown On The Couch and what I saw was Tom being held ,scragged , being hit from behind , held out in marking contexts , frees against for retaliation.

Thought those were tactics were illegal.

Not unreasonable to expect free kicks if it occurs again but that won't happen.

I personally cannot wait for the autopsy thread where the deficiencies of a team of 23 are placed squarely on the shoulders of a 22 year old KP forward.

Cornes says his nervous for Port , because Scott is the best coach in the AFL and has had two weeks to plot their downfall. We know Kenny will go after Tommy Stewart. Is there another player he could target for some extra attention to put them off their game? He could pull a surprise….
Let’s see who wins in the coaches box.
If Hinkley's only plan is to go after players he should just quit.

Let's go with this for a hypothetical:

Neale has a quietish match Port and the coaches opt to bring in Hawkins for our next match - Tom is clearly still hampered (even simply as a factor of being 36), he's not moving well and fails to hit the scoreboard with Jezza often double teamed by Tom's opponent

How much shit is then hung on Scott & probably also Tom for him being selected?

Agreed the only way i would play Hawkins is if Neale is injured/suspended and even then Rohan may be a better bet or even SDK forward

Even Stanley has started clunking marks up forward and kicking goals of late - after going goalless for a couple of seasons

Tom = honourable loss
Neale = delist the guy who averages more goals than Tom

Neale is up for criticism like everyone else. If he plays from behind and misses easy goals, his age shouldn't matter.
Granted expectations should be modified, as in comparing to Hawks previous (long ago) output, but he's expected to fire and I hope he does. The future is now.

Nah, Mitch Duncan is ready to take the fall. Dangerfield if he dares have less than 8 clearances and 9 score involvements from 70% gametime. Ollie Henry if we kick it on top of his head to a 1v2 all night.

Personally I can see this September shaping as Neale/Hawkins putting us in a no win position.
IMO we will bow out at some point. When that is from W2-4 we will see. But unless we get absolutely spanked in 1-2 losing finals those two will be judged harshly.

Leave Hawkins out and get eliminated while being competitive and the rhetoric will be that we made an error leaving the big guy out. Play them both and the crowded forward line will be the story. Drop Neale and bringing back a cooked Hawkins for the young blood will be the talking point.

When in reality we're likely exiting finals at some point regardless.

The Weather is looking ok. I would play SDK and look to sub him off. Stanley can play less minutes early in the game so he is fresh in final quarter.

This is a way to ease SDK back into the team without overloading him.

Blitz could even be the sub to come on.
