Queensland clubs - What the hell happened?

It’s strange. A lot of journalists think we traded well.

Rocky had to go so we could change up the midfield.
Schache we had to get the best value for. The mistake was in drafting him in the first place. Traded back into the first round.
Hodge is a great pickup.
Cameron we overpaid for but might be forgiven in a weak draft.

I don't agree with Priority Picks as other clubs are affected, I would rather see the AFL invest money to improve their facilities.

They finally seem to have competent people running the club, proper football people. AFL should get the offield problems sorted and players will want to stay

Sydney clubs still get a salary cap concession.

And (I'm fairly sure) that qld clubs don't.
If you're talking about COLA, that no longer exists. Neither does the increased cap for GC/GWS.

He's deeply concerned about the salary cap concession designed to assist Sydney's ability to retain shit players, as it only applies to those renting while earning under median wage.

Nick Bowen's assessment for the Lions is quite good, although I don't know the Lions were exactly thrilled to receive 18 for Rockliff. They took it after apparently narrowly failing to win the argument for a Band 1, which would have netted Pick 2. Geelong receiving 19 for Motlop topped off their angst.

Bowen on the Lions: "They had to work hard and paid a high price but landing contracted Crow Charlie Cameron was a coup for the Lions. Former Hawks skipper Luke Hodge came for a song and should be a powerful leader around the Gabba. The Lions would have been thrilled to receive pick No.18 as compensation for former captain Tom Rockliff's free agency departure to Port Adelaide. They should also be commended for proactively brokering a win-win result for the club and Josh Schache, a deal that got the homesick forward back to Victoria and brought in two picks that enabled the club to snare a third top-20 selection via a late trade with Richmond."

The Lions take Picks, 1, 15, 18, 40, 44, 52 to the draft. They get who they consider to be the best youngster in the country, a player that they likely could have got with #12 [Cameron] and likely a good youngster at 18 (or maybe Ballenden). The whereabouts of a bid on Connor Ballenden will be crucial. If it comes after 18, then Brisbane matches with 40 (gained from Richmond) and 44 and will have picked up tall forward Ballenden, plus three other quality youngsters to add to their young squad. That's a very good result. They also have the flexibility to pick up maybe two delisted FAs (most likely midfielders) or youngsters with 52 and wherever 44 ends up after matching a bid for Ballenden (porbably late 50s or so.)

QLD clubs are bleeding talent.

Schache, Docherty, Longer, Yeo from Brisbane
Jaeger, Prestia, ? on Lynch from GCS.

Getting players to want to go there is big for them and paying high draft picks for them when the talent that will be at that pick is questionable on staying more than 2 years makes sense.

Weller for 2/Cameron for 12, or you hold out and miss them this year, end up having to deal next year and risk the kids you draft wanting out not long after

They need to play the long game.
I agree.

Also, not alot of people don't see many Dockers (I can understand that). Weller is underrated and picks are overrated.

The deal is overs but not as much as people think.

Brisbane made the super aggressive moves when you know you've banked enough talent to start forming a good side and you want it to gather momentum so the group stays together over the next few years and everything builds from there.

They have 3 good talls who are starting to mature in Hipwood, McStay and Andrews. 2 elite players in Beams and Zorko. The right number of experienced role players like Martin, Rich, Lester, Bell and Bastinac. And a strong collection of young players - Witherden, McCluggage, Berry, Cox, Cutler, Gardiner, Keays, Mathieson, Taylor, Mayes.

They pretty much said we'll sell Schache on the cheap to remove the problem of having to develop him in and out of the side and we'll pay overs for Cameron to give us some speed and pressure and belief that the team is exciting. Even their pick swap with Richmond which I'm most critical of seems like a move to get the quality in rather than quantity.

I expect that this time next year we won't be talking about Brisbane as a basketcase and will be talking about them as a potential finalist in 2019.

All you have to do is get Cameron's self belief up to a certain level and he will easily be worth that pick.
I think his return home may bring the best out of him.

I agree. Weller was worth Pick 5 to 15 IMO. If he ends up as good as Scully, we've won. If he ends up as good as Brad Hill, we've only lost the trade a little. Any less, and it becomes more and more deplorable. But it's done now, so the only thing to be done as a supporter is to cheer Weller on and hope he succeeds along with the Gold Coast Suns.

Schache is the one that stands out to me. And there was something weird going on there. Tigers keen as mustard until we had really close look. Then walked away fast, didn't look back. Hmmmm
