Sorry, I didn’t see anything good about Cleary’s performance last week. I wanted to post something in the autopsy thread but was expecting to be howled down, so I didn’t bother. So not surprised he was dropped.

But Scott as his replacement? WTF?
I'm with you on Cleary. I know he has a very light frame but I do have some concerns about his contested game.

Cleary has always been ok when promoted to the AFL team and has never had a decent run at it. Hope he gets one soon but even with Williams playing wing and Ed in the middle we still have too many defenders.

Not meaning to be condescending as Scott is a very good foot soldier, but he is an ideal sub given the range of roles he can play. Expect him to be sub tonight

Sydney supporters really are a bunch of whingy pissants. Filling the main board thread with pissing and moaning over a grand final they lost every stat in comfortably.

They only got as close as they did because Kennedy played a blinder.

They cannot accept they were outplayed.
Of course, the 2005 grand final was fair though 😏

Seen in an article where Bevo has all but confirmed that Richards will be given the run with role/tag on Heeney. Was probably expected. Don't think we have anyone quick enough to cover Warner.

I don’t really get the outcry over Cleary. He’s a neat kick but not exactly a run and carry type (likely why Bramble has cemented a spot particularly without JJ). His primary role is to be a ‘defensive’ defender but he just doesn’t have the body strength to win enough contests. I actually doubt he makes it at the level, which is unfortunate because we do need his type

the umpires costing the Swans four goals.

I’ll explain it to you, bloodsbigot , as you seem too thick to work it out for yourself. If one - just one - of those alleged missed frees had been paid, subsequent progression of the game would have unfolded differently, with different events. The Swans would probably have turned it over, yet again, as they did all game, and things could even have got a lot worse, instead of better. Get it now?

They will moan until the day they die. 2016 is the gift that keeps on giving; we really broke them

I personally think he could eek out a solid career. Plays well at VFL level, doesn't do a lot wrong at AFL level. Kind of feel like he should have another 5-10 games under his belt. I felt the same way about West when he was stuck in VFL purgatory.

That being said I quite like Anthony Scott for a variety of roles in the squad. Kind of a perfect sub option.

thought cleary, gallagher and freijah all struggled somewhat. To be expected being younger players but possibly any outs may come from there.
Yep.

Thought Cleary struggled most out of these 3 so no surprise to me.

Also this balances the team back up. We had too many defenders previously.

I think we’re still a defender heavy to be honest, so my issue isn’t with Scott. But what’s Bramble offer over Cleary? I’d much rather the class and composure of Cleary in that last spot than a butcher like Bramble, I’m just not sure what he offers yeah he has speed but he doesn’t exactly use it. Cleary has a bit of upside too that Bramble just does not have.

Overall it’s neither here nor there I just think it’s a waste of a spot when we could be finding out whether Cleary has a future without really losing anything on field
Cleary definitely has a future, but he needs to put some muscle on. AFL just way too physical for him currently, gets pushed aside too easily. We're still trying to win games so can't carry players on potential just yet.

Correct. Kennedy was easily the Norm Smith medalist in the GF. No other swan player showed up. Quite simply the swans sh*t the bed that day. Their forwards lack of performance made Fletcher Roberts look like Matthew Scarlett and Zaine Cordy like Royce Hart up front.

The swans had a way better team on paper but our blokes were clearly on amphetamines and destroyed them. Also, having the umps in our back pocket was actually a fair factor when you consider the AFL had propped up the Swans via COLA which gave them 2 flags - why can’t the dogs get a leg up as well? EAD campaigners.

If we're looking for a half back flanker I think Freijah has more upside than Cleary and it shouldn't take very long for him to become a permanent fixture in the team. Cleary is a neat player with good skills but doesn't have the power to be a driving force off half back. Freijah, with a bit more development, has him covered in that aspect.

Might be able to play a role in the future, I don't think he has enough that standouts to be anything more though. His composure is one of his biggest strengths, but can be very indecisive in his decision making which the coaches have pointed out in the VFL reports. Seems to lack a bit of confidence to pull the trigger.

Does that still happen these days? I figure that coaches have too many techniques to negate that kind of tactic.

And besides, Scott wouldn't get within 5 yards of Blakey, especially on the fast Marvel deck.

More likely to try to drag him deep when he's up against one of the talls.

Still happens. Stewart has been copping it recently with success.

James Jordon has been playing that role for Sydney lately and there is a chance he goes to Dale. Seems to be going to the oppositions most prominent outside player. Has gone to Sam Walsh, Jordan Clark, Lachie Whitfield and Noah Anderson in the past month.

The CBs will be a very interesting watch and have a significant impact on the result I suspect.

Richards seems like a good match up for Heeney having similar pace and aerial ability.

Warner is the interesting one. Looks like the fastest player in either team so if he gets out either from a stoppage or in general play, I can't see anyone in our team running him down. A very threatening scenario and we'd be moreorless relying on him not to capitalise on his own advantage through a wrong decision or skill error.

I don't know if there's too much we can do about him in general play other than a loose cover corralling him, if possible, to a less advantageous position and trusting our defence to cover his target options. If he's running freely through the middle of the ground we'd be fairly screwed I would think. Our best chance of limiting that possibility would be to be very secure in our possession, winning more than the Swans ideally, and hanging on to it/converting when we have it.

But how to stop him from CBs and the space and opportunity that 6-6-6 affords him. I think The Bont might take responsibility for him at CBs. If he goes straight to Warner, Warner's defensive accountability will be tested. Obviously, Bont is not someone you can give too much reign to as he'll hurt you the other way. They might send Jordan to Bont but if Bont persists with Warner he's going to have 2 accompanying him and probably Treloar is then free. Would the Swans want to live with that? If they let Warner and Bont duke it out at CBs, then Bont's positional prowess and strength gives us the best chance of denying Warner possession from CBs whilst also making him accountable the other way. In the instances where he does get free from a CB we're in all sorts.

Bont v Warner decides the game imo.

Is Bevo going to actually plan for opposition players for once? Heeney, Warner & Gulden cannot be left to roam forward of the ball or it will be an onslaught. Richards on Heeney is a good start. I'd like the coaches to lay down a massive challenge to Treloar and go head to head with Warner. He's the one that can match him on the spread.

Just a thought, I wonder if Scott might actually be in the 22 and brought in to play a negating role on Gulden on a wing?

I don't think that Treloar can match him on the spread. I don't think we have anyone who can. I think we have to do what we can to stop him getting it as often as possible.

Once he has the ball on the spread, it's already too late and Treloar will be chasing like everyone else.

If Bont goes to Warner it gives Treloar the chance to be the guy we use to break and he might have that opponent for speed but he won't have that edge on Warner. His speed will be wasted to a degree on Warner. Other more exceptional skills and strengths will be required at source to make Warner defensively accountable and reign him in a bit.

Imo of course.

Love the complaints that we had father-sons in the team too, they claim also gave us a leg up. Yep, the highly in demand Cordy and Hunter in the team that didn't merit a bid earlier than the 3rd round in their respective drafts. Clearly a leg up.

Good analysis and tend to agree. If we can shut down Heeney and make the others have to be accountable for Bont then we are a fair way their. Hopefully we have a plan for Gulden too

Swans fans are the Teruo Nakamura's of the AFL.

Keep fighting the good fight you sad, deludedly pathetic bastards.
I've just been told to "fight like a MAN", on the main board (yeah right) instead of here where the discussion started and the Swine fans intruded :p

Gags? Seemed to go to Green after half time last week.

And someone has to go to Blakey. He's amazing.

Where is the article?
Can't remember, but it was from Bevos presser this week I believe. Article was about club being relieved that Libba has been cleared, and would pump the team ahead of this week. And Bevo at the end mentioned Richards will likely line up against Heeney due to Richards defensive ability.

Thanks, asking purely for SuperCoach reasons.
