Autopsy R14, 2017: Swans vs Bombers

I'm watching the last 10 minutes again over breakfast, does anyone know what the 50m to Hurley was actually for?

Poetic that Rohan gave it away against Hurley and then kicked the winner against him.
Officially recorded against Towers. Reasons unknown. Can only imagine it was for encroachment on the mark?

Strange fortnight.

We played awful periods of footy where opponent's piled on 13 or so goals straight and still won both at the death.

I get that vibe we never give up again. This is the way we played in the mid naughties when no game was ever over.

This is a fortnight of belief building that eras can be based on. Great education for the newbies!

The umps did us once. Why give them a second chance, when the players get fined for saying it to BT?
I too was pleased that he was excluded from the rooms. And don't come back.
I'm pretty sure this wasn't the reason the Swans didn't let him in but the entire channel 7 commentary team barracked for Essendon the entire game. They were shattered in the end. So for me personally it was satisfying to see them being told to **** off and let us enjoy the moment.

Last time he had a couple of bad games he came out firing with 4-5 including some gems. I expect a good haul against the Demons.

Yep I'd be worried if I were Melbourne he won't be awful 2 weeks in a row and we play the MCG well

Thing it deserves to be said how much Nick Smith has improved especially last few weeks imo. He took a lot of vital marks last week and was good again tonight and overall has really lifted individually in the last 5/6 rounds which I think has helped us greatly.

I think Parker has improved a lot and I think him playing in the forwardline is a good move with bursts in the middle as I think Heeney is the more dynamic midfielder.

Those are the two (maybe Mills) who I think are the real improvements from the first few rounds.

Great win just a few thoughts i had while watching:

- Dont think Haywood will ever celebrate a goal like that again

- Josh Kennedy is absolutely unbelievable. Ill put my hand up and questioned whether he was the right choice for captain after the first 6 rounds. Just another example of how much i know (sweet FA).

- Parker is working his way back into form.

- Bud was pretty poor tbh. But I love the fact that after achieving pretty much everything you can in the sport (premierships, Colemans, AA's) and with a contract thats already guaranteed to make him a very very rich man, a win in round 14 on a freezing friday night still means absolutely everything to the great man. Its that will to win and love for the game that separates him from superstar to all time great. Just work on the kicking for next week big fella.

-Reid was pretty good, again just needs to kick straight.

- Not sure what to make of those video ref goals. I wouldnt have wanted to be the reviewer tonight because they were ******* close. On balance you'd think that 1 of them would go our way, but in the end it just made the win better.

- Has Mcguire had some work done? thought there were a few less chins than normal, maybe it was just because i had a few Peroni's in the system.

- Towers let me down tonight. I backed his inclusion and he was pretty woeful

- Grundy & Smith are quietly putting together a great block of footy (I called them cooked after the WCE game, again WTF do i know)

Go Bloods, i love this team (sorry for the long post)

agreed last week at the 'G Dean Tower's final quarter effort to get the ball to Tom Papley was brilliant..yet in the final quarter last night, two crucial turnovers..he wins the Jekyll & Hyde trophy.. Josh Kennedy 36 disposals was an amazing game..

Sitting in the Virgin lounge with the Bombres all here......might go and chat... they still look as shocked as me!

If McAvaney's "Mark! MARK! MAAARK! ROHAN! IT IS UNBELIEEEVABLE!" doesn't take its place in the pantheon of great Swans commentary moments, then we're doing it wrong.
Bruce makes everything better

Still did a few good things through the game. You'd prob go unchanged after that if possible. Starting to think even Florent might keep a spot. Was wide open a few times on wing and ignored in second half, so he's at least getting to where he needs to.
I could really see Edwards coming in for either at some stage.
My preseason pick Ronke might be a finals bolster if he keeps going the way he's started in the last two weeks in neafl.
Everything just looks great this morning.

Tippett is a no-brainer inclusion. Last two weeks Sinclair's TOG is 52% and 50%. He is literally only in the team because we need to have a second ruck that isn't Sam Reid. We are playing one man down when he isn't in the ruck, Tippett is at least a competent forward in between ruck duties.

This will defintely happen.

But currently Sinkers is adding enough hitouts and pressure acts for he and Sam to usually win the day. If Tippo does that and snags goals as well it will improve us.

This is no exaggeration when I say that this is the single most speechless I've ever been during a Swans win. Even more so than when Mal kicked the match-winner in the 2012, or when Leo Barry took that mark in 05. I actually stared at the screen with my jaw open like a ****head for minutes on end - that's how much I had consigned myself to us losing this game.

I think this game best validated the frustration I've been feeling about the Swans all year. This was a putrid performance skills-wise (somehow even worse than in prior weeks), and we very nearly kicked ourselves out of the game and failed to capitalise despite the fact most of the game was on our terms. But then we get our **** together for, what, four, five minutes, and bam. We kick successive goals, produce some brilliant passages and make some smart decisions, and we win. THIS is where the frustration I wrongfully dished out on here throughout the first three quarters comes from. Why must they make it hard on themselves, and in turn, on us? Why can this team produce some great footy in small patches yet play like a bottom of the ladder side throughout longer patches? I know why, as I said in another thread this week. I think this is a team that's mentally on the rails. Two grand final losses, not to mention year after year of consistently high-quality footy deep into September, has probably shaken their ability to believe. It's why they can find the intensity and hunger to win the contest at times, then lose that intensity and hunger just as quickly. So I do get it, and it's wrong of me to make generalisations about the boys when I have zero idea about what goes on at the club. But it doesn't make it any less frustrating when their form ebbs and flows so drastically in the space of one match.

What my A-grade dummy spit has taught me is that you just cannot keep a great team down for long. No later than half an hour after preparing to give up on our hopes this season, they had won a game that seemed impossible. If sitting (temporarily) inside the eight, with six wins - all against teams above us on the ladder - is our version of a poor season, I will happily take it, and i'll be bloody proud to do so.
This is a ripping post. Couldn't have related it better.

This game... *shakes head*

Having calmed down after the finish, the concentration lapses are a worry, but I think this side doesn't quite have the consistency over four quarters just yet. My god they have a crack though. Proud of them for not giving up when it looked like the Bombers had it.

Some of the umpiring in that last quarter was bordering on cheating in favour of Essendon though.

The last 5 mins were basically controlled by umpiring.

All the following in 3.5 mins.

5mins to go contentious free to Daniher inside 50. Could have been shot on goal but wasn't.

30 seconds later a 50m penalty and goal to bombers

30 secs later a 50/50 free to Tipungwati in square and another inside 50 entry for the bombers

2 contentious score reviews ruling against us

A contentious call against sam for Bellchambers (also just outside 50). Another inside 50.

Buddy did get a holding in the square though. So...yay?

Luckily in the last 2 mins we essentially didn't give the whistle blowers time to coordinate something else.

Would have been 50m. Have a look at the replay. An Essendon player was halfway down the goal square.
Given what we have see over this season as a whole, your faith in that being called just astounds me!!!

Zac must be spewing he isnt part of this win..
Saw him in the lifts at half time and he apologised for the episode last week causing him to miss this week! Told him not to worry about it, we liked his aggro and backed him in. Should have told him to learn a bit of 'sneaky' while I was at it.

I was really shocked by how slight he is. I reckon he's only about 5.11 (maybe less) and if he weighs more than 85kgs I'd be stunned.
