He can work on his kicking at training and still play every game. He is still a better KPF option than anyone else at the moment and we can't afford to go shorter.

I agree, but he clearly isn't working on it.

His ball drop is scientifically wrong. Its not acceptable for a professional to do this IMO.

this is our time to see what our list has to offer. We are not seriously seeking to win a premiership this year no matter what some of our delusional supporters think
We can get lost in our recent victories i suppose but you are right, i can see about 6 players who will not be on our list next year.

I still think butch is overated on this board...his marking and pressence is good but everything else is iffy...

I still don't know if he will live up to the hype....but for now he has to stay in the team not because I think he deserves it but we just don't have anyone else as no one wants to pull the trigger on salts

His kicks weren't shanks today. They were spinning properly and didn't miss by a lot. I remember vividly another young forward whose kicking for goal was the bane of many supporters in his early years. He went on to be a premiership captain and the best player we have had in the afl. Butch is working on it and the improvement will come.

Hence my earlier post. Where is Ben Perkins these days? Last I heard he moved to Queenstown in NZ and was often seen walking around town in a Power guernsey. Very eccentric, but a champion kicking coach. Helped Tredders heaps and apparently was quoted saying that Port Adelaide would be the only AFL club he would ever work for.

Send out the trackers and bring him back.

is he working it..why hasnt he got rid of his two hand ball drop...he has all week every week to work on it yet it doesnt seem to change...all he has to do is copy hamish's kicking action and he will improve out of site.

I would say he is. His routine has changed for the better. These things can take time. Tredders did some one on one work with one of the retired VFL champs. Was it Dunstall?

Watching Butcher in the warm up he kicked every single goal and his kicking looked the most fluent I have ever seen it.

Even during the game he was actually kicking the ball well and just missed a couple (if that makes sense).

He is coming good IMO. Will bust a game open soon and possibly next week vs the Saints.

butch showed signs, his goal kicking will never be a weapon but i liked what i saw with his marking. he is a confidence player once he starts playing regularly (fingers crossed his body holds up), gets into a rhythm it will start to click. moores getting better, there were some good signs. but shit we were frustrating im putting it to the extra pressure of the best team in current the comp applied

I thought his kicking action looked alright - the ball didn't spiral off in weird vortexes off his boot. It went pretty much where he aimed, he just needs to improve his aim. ;)

The ball drop still looks odd, but he releases close to the boot and the drop punts spun as they should. He even put one on a team mate's chest in the last.

Don't have time to make a long post, but anybody calling Hartlett soft or lazy after that game can eat a dick. You don't have 4 smothers in a game if you're soft or you're not working hard enough. Sometimes a player can just have a quiet game (his first in nearly two months, by the way) without it making him a lazy tradebait spud. Especially when you're getting thrashed by the best team in the competition.

The one that got me was the free kick to Stratton when he was KO'ed. He clearly gathered the ball, stood up and then dipped his head down again into our player. Deserves the pain, umpire screwed up the free kick. Hawks goal early in the third.
The free kick was for Wingard dropping into his back after the initial tackle/duck was deemed play on.

What concerns me the most lately is the way opposition seems to get 4+ goals a game by delivering a 15-20 metre pass into our defensive 50 about 35-45 metres out with what seems no port player within 10-15 metres. This has happened the past few games. Not sure if its the way we set our defensive zone or what but it would be interesting to see some behind the goal footage to see whats going on..

some of our defenders need to play a bit tighter or closer to their direct opponents as well.

What about Burgoyne's "fair bump" AKA shirtfronting someone while they are still in the air.

Not sure there is any rule to say that you can only bump someone who has both feet firmly planted on the ground. We all complain about the physicality of the game being taken away "the bump is dead" blah blah blah and then someone lays a good bump and we bleat like someone has stolen our first born.

Spot on review. Very poor skills, today just seemed very off. Thought we did ok considering the result.

You can only judge from who was on field today but since I've been whinging in every other thread but Hombsch out was just a bad call!!! I've been fuming about it since Thursday

vonno ... me too with Jack ... his form been ok I thought ... quiet last week and was subbed ,,, but???

supposedly out for match ups ... that's insane ... sorry Ken ... bad call, IMO.

Pittard was terrible again today. thats all I have

... was at work - didn't see the game but the comments from lots of people agree with you ... sad - I though Pittard was going to give us something ... like Macca said ... probly not AFL standard long-term!

Seems like Hawthorn left their key forward at home on the day to make a statement to a number of clubs, after last week's discomforting loss. Looks like they're a team that thrives on reputation. I can only hope we learn from our mistakes and have a chance for another crack at them come September.

I haven't read this thread yet and only got to see the second quarter ... BUT ... even though we won the quarter Hawthorn were the better TEAM.

We played like a team coached by assistant coaches and they played like a team coached by a "team" coach helped by assistant coaches. This is not meant to be a massive criticism of Hinkley but it probably shows the part that he lacks experience in.

Sure we won the quarter but
We weren't fluid they were.
We played negative footy, more worried by who our opponent was, they played according to the structure they had on the park.
Freeze the game before the ball gets kicked to an area and then again after the ball gets there. By the time the ball gets there they had the numbers, the right mix of talls and short AND the players were in the right spots. Usually with someone free either in front or behind the contest, whereas we were all over the place.
When playing guessing style football you will usually end up second best.

Last week I said it was a good game to learn from for both players and coaches, going by the second quarter and the team selection I am not sure the coaches learned that much OR they did and it will take time for the players to adjust, but the team selection IMO was not quite right and the coaches still have some way to go.

I have no idea about the other quarters but individual brilliance/effort is what got us in front in the second quarter and the scoreline flattered us. I now have a feeling the final result may have been the same.

wrt player rating etc, we were beaten so badly structure and team play wise that (for the second week in a row) I don't think it would be a fair reflection on the individual players.

EDIT: One minor player review
Lobbe: Everything else is coming along fine but the time has come to start clunking some marks.
