R4: Port v Hawthorn Review

Hodge was a terrible caricature of himself last night. Was allowed way too much laterally by the umps based on his reputation. First half of his career he was an excellent player , but the last few seasons he really has been terrible and wouldn't get away with half the crap he does if he didn't have the rep he does.

Anyone see Stratton ( i think) punch Hammer in the guts off the ball? Happened in the 4th and Hammer was struggling, probably winded. Hawks then proceeded to smash him and prevent him from going off. Hammer got a week in 2013 for similar on Hawk Brad Hill.
Hawks targeted him for his bully comments but I think Harts took the psychological game to them and it had a big influence on our win. On ya Hammer

Thought you guys were our biggest contender for 2015 pre-season but I dropped off you for Freo after your slow start. I even wrote you lot off after Wines and Gray went out for this game. I'm man enough to admit I got it completely wrong. I was shocked by that first quarter. You did to us what we occasionally do to the poorer sides of the comp. It reminded me a lot of Hawthorn's first quarter against Freo at the G early last year except even more potent.

You made us look slow and smashed us out of the middle. The one area of the ground I thought we'd have you covered with Wines and Gray out. I don't think I gave any where near enough credit to just how important Lobbe is for you guys. Freed up Ryder to go forward and once Lake went down we were in struggle town (though you lot clearly had the upperhand before then).

I'm buoyed by our ability to fight back and get close but you guys shouldn't worry about the fade out in the last. Most teams you play like that against you will probably walk away with a 80+ point win.

I had mixed feelings about belting Geelong in round 1. It was good to beat them convincingly but it kind of signified the end of an era of epic games between the two sides. I am eagerly looking forward to our game against your lot later in the year and possibly again in finals. If they're anything like the last 3 it will be incredibly good viewing!

How our back 6 are underrated by other clubs supporters ill never understand

Crazy given you can throw O'shea and Impey (when fit) into that. To me that is the key to success over the longer term. We can't entirely control what happens with some of the key forwards (does Butcher, Shaw, Harvey come on) but if you can find a replacement for Carlise sometime in the next 3-4 years, we have the best defence for the next 8-10. Teams like Freo have shown that an outstanding defence + a good midfield is enough to get you close enough to be a threat. With the likes of Impey, Wingard, and Wines Port could still be challenging for flags in the 2020's. Nothing is set in stone, and you have to take your chances, but it is very exciting times to think that not only are we around the mark right now, but that we will be for a very long time.

To be fair I could say the same about you guys and Freo. Freo are the form side at the moment. It seems that we both poked the bear last year so to speak because Sydney and Freo have really come out this year with something to prove. Early days yet, but it could make for a pretty epic finals series with so many teams playing a fast physical game right now.

Looking at the stats, we had no right to win that game! Luckily, games are only won through one stat and that's the scoreboard. It also shows that the boys were very efficient in most areas.

Back in the dark days I would have been shitting myself in that last quarter but was surprisingly calm tonight (while the 15 year old kid next to me was jumping around having a seizure) and always thought we would hold off the challenge eventually. Great win and bring on the fruit tingles.

A lot of the booing was actually directed at Josh Gibson after a few of his cheap shots early in the game, one of which led to a Westhoff fifty and goal. He got a lot more than Burgoyne.

There was a lot made of the loss of Wines and Gray before this game, there has not been as much as I would have expected made of the fact that we won without them. I wouldn't put him as BOG, maybe not even in our top 3 but Aaron Young was one of the main reasons we won last night. Came in with a reputation that didn't extend far beyond Alberton and made sure that we lost as little as possible in the centre. Of course we had other players like Polec, White and Boak stepping up and Westhoff doing a bit.

Monfries not doing much and Wingard falling off after half time were disappointments but they have both shown they can play good games.

Are they really? And if they are, who cares? Does opposition supporters saying nice things about our team win us football games?

It is win/loss for me. It frustrates me no end that some of our players don't get the respect they deserve (see Wines). It kind of works to our advantage though because quite frankly how often have we knocked teams off that we weren't expected to. I am happy with the underdog tag.

Lost my shit at that.

Edit: To clarify, when a player is in the hands of a trainer, the opposition player needs to back off.

Nah, it just goes to show you stats are severely overrated. Inside 50s being the most overrated of all - that one is the equivalent of 'crosses made' in association football.

Gibson who continually tackles people to the ground after marks and gets done once and has no idea why.

Awesome win. Only one change id make
In: Gray
Out: Monfries

Angus Monfries is useless why he still gets a game is beyond me.

Didn't he get 25 touches a few weeks ago? Even though he is well down, he is the ultimate professional. He is a good set shot, he is a strong mark for his size, he provides great defensive pressure in the forward line. At his best he adds a heck of a lot to the team even if it is sometimes difficult to measure. He wouldn't want to string too many more average games together though.

As I posted elsewhere, it was like the T-800 vs the T-1000 in Terminator 2. We hit you with shotgun blasts to the face and body in the first half, but like any great side your boys didn't hang their heads, regrouped and came back strong in the second half when we were out of shells. That's the kind of resilience that wins premierships, hence why you're back to back champions.

I can't remember the last time Kane Cornes sang the song with any gusto, he appears to me to do no more than mouth the words.

hmm I noticed the same thing, I can understand him not going over the top singing the words but not smiling and being happy with your team mates is oddo_O, he looked bored and like someone took a dump in his Wheeties:confused:, enjoy the moment Kane especially with what could be your final season

The booing of Shaun Burgoyne is just silly. ok he left and he had his reasons, let it go, he's such a fair, brilliant dare I say humble player who has never said a bad word about Port. Still one of my favourites.

And he has 3 sons (another on the way) who we want to play for Port and he's a 100 game player for Port and Hawthorn.

I like to think at least part of tonight's booing was due to him punching Gus in the diaphragm early on.

17 minute mark of Richmond elimination final last year 7.1 43 v 0.0 0. Last night at the 17 minute mark it was 7.1 43 v 0.1 1. It shows the difference of the quality of opponent last night compared to last September.

I knew the game would turn and I knew Hawthorn would came back and make a game of it and that we could not stop all of Hodge Lewis and Mitchell for all of the night. I didnt expect Bobby to stop Roughie all night but bloody hell he did.

When we kicked our 14th goal in middle of the 3rd qtr I said to Lurk3r - who has changed his bloody username - that I want 4 more to feel save. He said 100 pts should do it as we were 88. I said no I want a couple of goals insurance against these guys cause I knew they wouldnt stop and we would tire. But bugger me I didnt expect them to have around 25 inside 50s in the last quarter. If they had kicked a bit straighter in the last quarter we would have needed those extra 4 goals I wanted.

Just like last elimination final the players drew on the hype of the final and jumper BS and the energy of the crowd I reckon the players drew on the significance of this years ANZAC day. The 120+ names on the jumper including the dozen that die, the initiative the club has with the Avenue of Honour, the combined defence boys beong around the club, the defence personnel involvement last week and the power of the pre game service etc. In both games they played like men possessed. That doesnt come from an ordinary game build up stuff. There is something deep and passionate driving that spirit to produce that sort of start in both games.

Hawthorn's time wasting after free kicks needs to be stamped out. Blatantly obvious and the umpires don't do a thing about it.
yep, hanballing it away, kicking it too, throwing the ball 10 metres past the player with the free, it was obvious but they got away with it every time.

Campaigner of a punch. :p

It's been mentioned before, but it truly is one of the great wins for the reunification merger.

Without it Nathan Krakouer isn't back at Alberton right now. Well, in the AFL at least.
ahchee would have been lost to the system and young would still be in norths reserves...
